Q: I recently read that the Swiftwater Inn was haunted. But now that it's torn down, what happened to the ghosts?

A: Named in 1976 to the National Register of Historic Places, the Swiftwater Inn's history dates back to before the Civil War when the hotel was known as Stanhope House.

During the hostelry's 200-plus years as the Swiftwater Inn, it housed such notables as actor Claude Rains, author Washington Irving and, some say, the ghosts of former guests. The hotel and the haunting images of previous occupants were once featured on the television show "Unsolved Mysteries."

In 2007, the building was cited as unsafe and was razed.

Could the ghosts have been transported with the construction debris to a landfill and are now haunting the dump? Maybe they still watch over the former site of the inn?
