The Miami Vice movie could've been as great and iconic as the series that preceded it. Instead it was met with decent, but not exactly enthusiastic reviews and managed to only get back about $65 million of its reported $125 million budget at American box offices.

But if you thought it sucked, you're not alone. The film's star Colin Farrell, who stepped into the Don Johnson-role, didn't much care for it.

"Miami Vice? I didn't like it so much - I thought it was style over substance and I accept a good bit of the responsibility," Farrell told British film mag Total Film.

"It was never going to be Lethal Weapon, but I think we missed an opportunity to have a friendship that also had some elements of fun."

If you thought the flick was awesome (you wouldn't be alone, our reviewer loved it), maybe you could chalk Farrell's remarks up to the fact his career hasn't been quite the same since.

Vice was the last big, Hollywood blockbuster he carried. He's done respected work in smaller films, sure, but he's fallen off the A-List. Of course, maybe the drug problems and sex tape had more to do with that than the box office disappointment of Crocket and Tubbs.

And this is where everything really changed for Farrell. Michael Mann decided to return to his roots with a Miami Vice remake. Original star of the series suggested Farrell play his part, and Jamie Foxx joined him as the iconic pop culture duo. What came out of it was a bloated, excessive, vain mess of a film. Mann used to make cool pictures, but this tries so hard. And nobody likes the 80s. We’re all thankful it’s gone, we don’t want to be reminded. Even if it’s updated, dark and gritty, and filmed digitally. Farrell and Foxx had no chemistry, it’s all style and no substance. Surprisingly, it garnered decent reviews, but audiences weren’t having it. It bombed in the US, and barely recouped it’s budget worldwide. Farrell had managed to work with two legendary directors on two of their worst films. It was an unfortunate happenstance.

Farrell says that after this film he was sent to rehab by his family, after struggling with alcohol and drug addiction for 10 years. He realized he was out of control and couldn’t put his foot on the brake anymore. It seems he has remained clean and sober in the years following, so good on him for that. It is not an easy thing to do. He says he enjoys being boring and a good father these days.

The 1980's was horrible for those that didnt live in that decade, the problem with the movie wasn't because of it's source material since it took place in the present, the movie was just awful overall.

You can make a good movie set in the 80's, it's not necessary to make references to an 80's thing 24/7.

I'm not sure I understand your first statement. Why do you say the 1980s was horrible for those that didn't live in that decade? You mean that the movie version of "Miami Vice" had too many references to the 1980s in the movie although it was supposed to be set in present day?
I don't know- I didn't see the movie and haven't seen that much of the TV series. So I don't really care too much about the movie or this series. But I do know it's really hard to do a good movie version of a TV show- it's rare that a movie version actually turns out pretty well, I think.

Mace Dolex, who cares that people that wasn't born in the 80's think the 80's was a terrible decade. The 80's was one of the best decades and i'm glad i grew up during that decade. I disagree with you that Miami Vice movie was awful. It wasn't awful at all and i bought it on dvd. I liked the movie and i thought Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx did a good job as Crockett and Tubbs. I'm surprised Colin didn't like the movie. Colin is a good actor and who cares that Hollywood thinks he isn't a A list actor anymore. Last movie of his i saw was with Terrence Howard that came out last year and i can't remember the name but it was good.

I meant to say that the 1980's would be considered bad for those that didn't live in that decade and were born after 1990, personally I love the 80's I grew up as a kid so I have lots of wonderful memories from that decade.

I loved the 80s too. There were good things and there were bad things but it was a great decade.

I was watching Miami Vice movie today and I saw Jamie Foxx and Naomie Harris have sex and she came in the shower with him and they showed her naked. She got a nice body. On the tv show, Phillip and Olivia Brown never had sex I don't think. I guess Michael Mann who directed the movie wanted to make the movie a little different than the tv show and let Jamie and Naomie be a couple even though they worked together. Colin Farrell I also noticed had long hair in the movie and Don Johnson didn't have long hair. Barry Shabaka Henley who played Jamie and Colin's boss was just as good as Edward James Olmos. Barry has a serious side about him just like Edward had because Barry didn't smile either hahahahahahahahahaha. I don't know who the woman was in the movie that played Gina's character on the tv show because I've never seen her before. Wasn't the woman who played Gina, her real name is Sandra Sauntiago right?
