Chace Crawford - The 24-year-old actor is best known for his role on the top-rating tweeny soapie "Gossip Girl". He was recently signed to play the lead in a remake of "Footloose". I've nothing to go on here.

Michael Cassidy - A TV vet, was a nice guy on "The OC", a bad guy on "Hidden Palms", and a kinda-nice but mostly-bad guy on "Smallville". Not a bad actor; pretty versatile, but a superhero? nah.

John Krasinski - Tall, lanky sod from TV comedy "The Office". Recently proved his big-screen worth in the acclaimed comedy "Away We Go" but, Captain America!? Puh-leeese!

Mike Vogel - Though known for such films as "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and "Cloverfield", Vogel's now a regular on the TV series "Miami Medical" so I guess that makes him a 'TV Guy', too?

Patrick Flueger - Best known for his role on the science-fiction series "The 4400", Flueger recently appeared opposite Tobey Maguire in "Brothers" - apparently, don't remember him myself. Doesn't mean anything - just that I wasn't paying attention.

Garrett Hedlund - Best known for his role in "Four Brothers" but has the lead role in the upcoming Disney blockbuster, "Tron : Legacy" so he's on the up and up. He's apparently the only one that hasn't had a "screen test" yet.

Two weeks ago, Marvel announced a list of seven actors who are in the running to star in "The First Avenger: Captain America." Since then, the list was narrowed down to five actors.

Then yesterday, Michael Cassidy ("Smallville") revealed via his Twitter account: "No Captain America for me." And now, Scott Porter ("Friday Night Lights") also announced that he didn't get the part. "Ain't Cap. Thank you all for the prayers though, I appreciate them all so very much," he said on his Facebook page.

This leaves just three actors who could end up getting the role. They are John Krasinski ("The Office"), Chace Crawford ("Gossip Girl"), and Mike Vogel (Cloverfield).

Who will wield the shield?

The answer of whom will hold Captain America’s shield and play alter ego Steve Rogers is still in Marvel’s hands, but the list of actors is being whittled down.

Wilson Bethel, who starred in HBO’s “Generation Kill” and currently appearing in “The Young and the Restless,” is still in the running as is Mike Vogel, who appeared in “Cloverfield” and CBS’ “Miami Medical.”

Meanwhile, Chris Evans, currently shooting "Safety Point" in Texas, has read for the part and has a test offer which may come to fruition next week. Garrett Hedlund has not tested yet though Marvel is very keen on him.

Actors previously reported as testing including John Krasinski, Michael Cassidy, Chace Crawford, among others, are no longer on the list.

The part calls for a nine-picture deal, the second of which would be the “Avengers” movie. That project could start shooting as soon as January 2011.

Taking a shot on relative unknowns such as Bethel and Vogel is not out of the realm of possibility as many tentpoles and franchises are handing out the keys to up-and-comers. Paramount and J.J. Abrams took a chance on Chris Pine to play Capt. Kirk while James Cameron put his trust in Sam Worthington.
