NEW YORK (AP) -- Patti LaBelle thinks some people shouldn't be on "American Idol" — and she's not talking about the contestants.

"Some of the judges, I don't think they're qualified to even judge," she said in an interview Wednesday.

The veteran R&B diva wouldn't say which judge she thought was lacking on the hit Fox show, which has Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson, Kara DioGuardi and Ellen DeGeneres picking America's top singers. Tuesday's "Idol" episode saw 12 female semifinalists competing during "Hollywood Week."

LaBelle said she was asked to be a judge on the series before Paula Abdul; a rep for the show had no comment on whether she was. LaBelle feels like the judges' comments to the contestants are too mean.

"The comments that were made, they could make you like wanna kill yourself," the 65-year-old singer said.

LaBelle's advice to singing hopefuls: "If you believe in yourself, just go for it. What do you have to lose? And when people tell you 'You can't,' you have to say, 'I can.'"

....she's too "sympathetic", compared with the ones currently presiding. Doesn't she know Simon Cowell's public persona depends upon him being "the cruelest man in the world" {i.e. "You can't sing- you can't even talk! Why don't you slit your throat, and save the world a waste of time and energy? Ha-ha-ha-HA!!! Sneer, sneer...."} ;) . That's why he's so successful.
And that's why "AMERICAN IDOL" is so successful- people like to see verbal abuse as well as personal triumph...

When ISN'T Patti LaBelle lashing out against someone? I love "Lady Marmalade", but I wish she'd just shut up otherwise.

I can't stand American Idol, and I kind of agree with Patti LaBelle. I think AI picked judges who have no real music experience whatsoever (except for Paula Abdul) for the entertainment value. I would never ever go on a show like that because I wouldn't want them insulting me the way they have done so many others. Not worth it at all! Plus, I think Simon is a total moron! I love her advice on singing hopefuls. Not everyone can sing, but there's nothing wrong with trying.

I agree with her. There's no reason for them to be as nasty as they are towards the contenders

While I do agree that the judges, especially Simon, can be a little too harsh at times, I find that I agree with them about 90% of the time. Some of these people think they can sing and they can NOT sing! (I find the most egotistical auditioners are often the worst.) There is nothing wrong with a little constructive criticism. I watched both Tuesday and Wednesday night and found that with a few exceptions, it was a waste of four hours. They were HORRIBLE and deserved the judges' criticism. If next week is no better, then I seriously am not watching this season.

Also, to the people posting here who never liked American Idol: I respect the fact that you do not like the show. However, I really wish you wouldn't come here to the FAN BOARD and make negative comments about it and say you hate it and stuff. It is a little rude and against the rules here anyway.

Agreed. Nothings more annoying than people complaining about a show they have never bothered to watch or don't watch.
