The cartoon was inspired by CBS's hit sitcom All in the Family. The show lasted only one season. The series featured a dog family consisting of Arnie, a bus driver, voiced by Henry Corden and his wife Agnes, voiced by Joan Gerber. They had two teenage kids, Terry and Roger, voiced by Julie McWhirter and Gene Andrusco respectively, and one little kid, Chester, voiced by Steve Lewis.

Ironically enough, I saw NBC's The Barkleys before I ever saw CBS's All in the Family (but I was aware of the connection).

yea, I remember that. That's when the networks were making saturday morning cartoon series that were based; or loosely based, on prime-time shows. Some were: "THE ODDBALL COUPLE", "MUSH", GILLAGENS PLANET", "THE PARTRIDGES IN SPACE" and one based on "I DREAM OF JEANNIE" but I forget what it was called. Ther was also a cartoon version of "THE ADDAMS FAMILY" and an animated "STAR TREK" series.

I might have watched it but I don't remember it. I remember watching Wait Till Your Father Gets Home which was also inspired by AITF back then though.

The Partridge Family cartoon is actually called Partridge Family 2200 AD. And the cartoon based on I Dream of Jeannie was simply titled Jeannie.

"Wait Til Your Father Gets Home" was based on a segment of "Love American Style" called "Love and the Old-Fashioned Father". The father in "Wait Til Your Father Comes Home" was voiced by Tom Bosley who would go on to play the father in a sitcom based on a segment of "Love American Style" when he played Howard Cunniingham on "Happy Days". "Happy Days" was based on the "Love American Style " segment "Love and the Happy Day".

...prepared TWO half-hour prime-time cartoon pilots for consideration on ABC's 1971-'72 schedule (as part of their deal with Paramount, I believe): "WAIT 'TIL YOUR FATHER GETS HOME" [which they successfully produced for syndication between 1972 and '74, when Chevrolet became its national sponsor] and "MELVIN DANGER, PRIVATE EYE", starring the voice of Richard Dawson as a bumbling "master of disguise" private detective {it aired on "LOVE AMERICAN STYLE" as "Love and the Private Eye" in early 1972}.


Blame CBS' Fred Silverman for the rush to adapt successful prime-time sitcoms into animated cartoons on Saturday mornings; in addition to being a whiz at scheduling prime-time series, he KNEW what kids wanted to see on Saturdays; this is why he also packed "THE NEW SCOOBY-DOO MOVIES" with plenty of the network's "second string" prime-time stars (either in a weekly series or "in development" for a network project) as "special guest stars", the better to promote them to a "new" audience- Sandy Duncan, Sonny & Cher, Dick Van Dyke, Jonathan Winters, Jerry Reed, Phyllis Diller, Don Adams, Tim Conway, et. al.- AND several of the CBS "Saturday morning headliners": "JOSIE & THE PUSSYCATS", "JEANNIE", "SPEED BUGGY", etc. as well. He made "JEANNIE" and "MY FAVORITE MARTIANS" the #1 shows in their time periods in the fall of 1973. When he tried "PARTRIDGE FAMILY: 2200 A.D." in the fall of '74, it flopped because kids didn't want to see the "Partridges" in any form.

In the meantime, ABC was having some success with "THE NEW ADVENTURES OF GILLIGAN" (revived years later on CBS as "GILLIGAN'S PLANET") and "LASSIE'S RESCUE RANGERS". And NBC had "STAR TREK" and "EMERGENCY PLUS 4"....
