View Full Version : Missing Scenes
ClassicTVGal 02-17-2010, 09:41 PM Have there been scenes that you would have liked to have seen played out on the show that weren't? Meaning an unfilmed scene/"missing" scene?
There are two that come to my mind right now, I'll get back to you on others when the time comes, lol.
1.) Murray tells Mary in, The Slaughter Affair that Marie claims he talks about Mary all the time.
I thought once, it would have been interesting to see the aftermath of Mary's first day at WJM. That night when Murray comes home and tells his family about the young woman who had been hired that day as the new Associate Producer of the Six O' Clock News.
2.) The aftermath of Better Late...That's A Pun...Than Never when Mary gets fired, and Murray believes it's his fault. Like when he came home that night.
Gee, I think there's a lot of 'Murray Getting Home' scenes that would be interesting to play out. :) ....maybe.
scotsguy 02-18-2010, 05:35 AM It would have been very emptional if we'd seen Rhoda say goodbye to Mary when she moved back to New York,we got a taster in season3 when Rhoda decided to go back to New York,then changed her mind.

Yes, I was just thinking this not long ago. I wish they had shown us that.
PGood97041 02-18-2010, 10:33 PM I love the way every show was written, and wouldn't question anything, but since this is a "what-if/wish" kind of thread:
What about "Rhoda The Beautiful", when Rhoda is named Miss Hempel's?
That would have been a nice scene to see.
Maybe Phyllis could have been there, so we could have seen the look on her face!

I always thought they should have had some scene on "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" explaining Rhoda leaving. The same for Phyllis. I know references were made later about Rhoda and her wedding, and both characters made appearances on the final episode, but people who only watched MTM probably wondered why their characters disappeared when they did.

I guess the reason there was no explanation like that on TMTMS is because of the way Rhoda was written. In the first episode of Rhoda, Mary sees Rhoda off at the airport in Minneapolis. There's no emotional goodbye in that scene because Rhoda is only planning on taking a quick vacation. When she winds up falling in love with Joe and, several episodes later, decides to stay in New York permanently (maybe this is when he proposes), she reveals that information to Mary also in an episode of Rhoda, and over the telephone (with Mary making a quick cameo appearance). And then, of course, there's Rhoda's wedding, again on Rhoda, with most of the TMTMS gang in attendance. So everything was fully explained, but all those scenes explaining this happened on Rhoda. It all made sense way back when, at the time these shows were both on the air together. But now when you watch reruns just of TMTMS, without Rhoda alongside it to fill in the gaps and keep things in context, it feels like something is missing and left unexplained.
scotsguy 02-21-2010, 06:29 AM Yes the Rhoda saying goodbye to Mary,as she went to New York was cut from the Rhoda season1 DVD set along with many other scenes with dialogue cut.
Thankfully I taped it from the cable in the 90s,sent it to a friend in US,who put it on youtube:

Oh you're welcome,shame the scene wasn't on the Rhoda DVD set.
PGood97041 02-22-2010, 04:45 PM Yeah, thanks for posting that...I vaguely recalled it, but it was nice to see it again!
McGillicuddy 02-22-2010, 10:56 PM Wheew!!!!! When I saw this thread I thought it was going to be in reference to edited episodes in the recently released seasons 5 & 6. I'm relieved to know thats not the case!!!!!!
ClassicTVGal 02-23-2010, 04:18 PM I don't know if you'd categorize the first two as "missing scenes", but I wanna throw it in here, anyway, lol.
* * *
I know that Kristen and I have talked about this before more than once and in years past, but I have wondered what would have happened if Murray had gone into Mr. Grant's office to confront him in, Better Late...That's A Pun...Than Never, instead of Mary doing it herself?
Also, what if Murray had been the first to tell Mary that he loved her first instead of Mr. Grant doing it.
Another thing, wouldn't it have been nice to see Valerie Harper do a guest appearence or two in-between her character's leave and the finale episode?
{And I'm not counting the 'Boyfriend One Too Many' episode, as one}
And what about Phyllis and Bess' leave, we don't see that, either, right?
