THE DICK VAN DYKE SHOW THEME SONG
(Music by Earle Hagen / Lyrics by Morey Amsterdam)
Dick Van Dyke

So you think that you've got troubles?
Well, trouble's a bubble,
So tell old Mr. Trouble to "Get lost!".

Why not hold your head up high and,
Stop cryin', start tryin',
And don't forget to keep your fingers crossed.

When you find the joy of livin'
Is lovin' and givin'
You'll be there when the winning dice are tossed.

A smile is just a frown that's turned upside down,
So smile, and that frown will defrost.
And don't forget to keep your fingers crossed!

Besides being a human joke machine, Morey Amsterdam was also a song writer. Not only did he write lyrics for the DVDS theme song he also wrote numerous other songs. Among them are the well known novelty songs "Why Oh Why Did I Ever Leave Wtoming" and "Rum And Coca-Cola".

Apparently, there's some dispute about the authorship of the Rum and Coca Cola (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rum_and_Coca-Cola) song.

I never knew about that dispute. Thanks for posting the link.

I never knew about that dispute.

Neither did I until your post. But since I was in a "Rum and Coca Cola" mood anyway after coincidentally listening to my Andrews Sisters album (yes, album), I thought I'd check what Wiki had to say when you mentioned the tie-in to Morey Amsterdam. :)

Well, now I'm glad I brought up the subject. It seems you and I both learned something!

On the DVD of season 4 of the show, there's a clip of Dick singing it at some show in Hollywood celebrating television, from 2003 or something.

I'm pretty sure that's the same clip I posted a link to above.
