No Match: Boos As Proposal Is Spurned

A man was left red-faced in front of thousands of ice hockey fans after he proposed to his girlfriend over a stadium video board - and was turned down.

The couple were watching the New York Rangers play at the city's Madison Square Garden arena on St Valentine's Day, when the words flashed up: "Melissa, will you be my Blueshirt bride? Love, Nick."

'Melissa' appeared horrified at the message, shaking her head no and rushing from her seat to a chorus of booing Blueshirt - Rangers - fans.

Marriage proposals via stadium video boards have become commonplace, but the timing of Sunday's hockey rink disaster is prompting questions as to whether the would-be Romeo could be quite so unlucky.

"I thought maybe it was staged because of Valentine's Day," Rangers player Erik Christensen told the New York Post. "Was that real?"

Despite the setback for the unlucky Rangers fan, his team enjoyed a 5-2 win over Tampa Lightning.

Awww poor guy! His girl was in shock. Hell when my boyfriend proposed it was just me and him and I still was almost too in shock to get the word "Yes" out.

Which is why you should never propose in a stadium, an arena, etc. Even the accepted proposals in those settings can turn sour (i.e. Starr Jones and Al Reynolds).

This is why you don't propose in public places. You just might get turned down.

i can understand why she felt intimidated, but what he did was very sweet and so i felt sorry for him too. i take it the crowd were very, very upset when she declined his marriage proposal.

I can understand that. Should the day ever come when the man of my dreams proposes to me - I hope he has enough sense to do it in private!

It's a real sad statement about our world that someone thought that a fake "wedding proposal gone bad" would be be good in-game entertainment at a hockey game. Save that kind of stuff for soap operas where we all know it's fake from the start.

It was meant to be part of the in-game entertainment? I guess, if you get your kicks watching the misery of others.

I remember Ahmad Rashad proposed to Phylicia Rashad during a Thanksgiving Day football game.

OH Nuts!

Exactly! That's the way such and intimate and private moment should be imho

It should be done in private, then you can go off and tell the world

I thought the guy was being romantic and not shallow.

I feel bad for the guy.

Wow, that's really pathetic. I felt sorry for the guy until I read this article. I agree, Marv. Very sad when arenas feel that this warrents entertainment! Wonder what prompted them to do that? Just to have something to show for on Valentine's Day? Sadly, though I could see this happening; someone proposing at a game or somewhere public and being turned down. What an awful feeling that must be!
