View Full Version : Mary's Traveling Stained-Glass Window
LittleRickyII 02-11-2010, 11:47 AM You know that octogon-shaped stained-glass window just outside the doorway to Mary's first apartment? I'm noticing this week that window really got around. After Mary moved out of that apartment in "Mary Moves Out" (first aired 9/20/1975), that wasn't the end of that window. Earlier this week I was watching an episode of Rhoda, "Ida's Doctor" (first aired 9/22/1975) and there was a scene in a restaurant with that window clearly visible in the background. Now this morning, I was watching the Phyllis episode "The Wrong Box" (first aired 11/8/1976), and there is a scene in a mortuary where this window appears again. That episode will be rebroadcast later today (5:00) on American Life Network. If anyone happens to see this post who gets ALN, check out Phyllis this afternoon and you'll see what I mean.
scotsguy 02-11-2010, 12:46 PM Well spotted I need to check that out.
I like spotting actors who've played different parts on MTM,Rhoda and Phyllis.
Richard Schaal most win the award,he was twins Howard and Paul Arnell(MTM),he was Chuckles The Clown in full make up season1(MTM)and he played a guy in a singles bar,on season4 (MTM)
He was Charlie,Joe's arrogant best mate on Rhoda,he was Leo in the first season of Phyllis(he also directed on Phyllis season2)and he was married to Valerie Harper at the time, too!

Hey scotsguy, if you happen to have this Phyllis episode recorded on DVD and have the time, would you mind posting a pic here so people won't think I'm crazy? :)
As for Richard Schaal, I guess nepotism might be behind his frequent appearances on MTM shows given his marriage to Valerie Harper at the time (maybe she kept getting him these jobs). Interestingly, two years after he was booted off of Phyllis (and one year after Rhoda and Joe had their fictional divorce), Valerie and Richard were divorced. And I don't think he appeared on any more MTM shows.
scotsguy 02-11-2010, 04:55 PM Sorry no camera at the moment but I can confirm Mary's stain glass window from her first apartment building, was indeed in the Phyllis episode "The Wrong Box",Mary Richards would have been in her 2nd apartment by this time,
so the window would be in storage at MTM,so why not,use it?;again well spotted!
I noticed in an episode of Dallas, they used Abby's living room set from Knots Landing,as the interior to a Dallas apartment,so Lorimar were watching their pennies too!
Marvo301 02-11-2010, 08:25 PM I think it's a pretty normal practice for production companies to reuse props.

Thanks for confirming that. :) And since you mention the shared sets on Dallas and Knots Landing, I remember someone saying they used Tony Nelson's living room on I Dream of Jeannie as the Tates' living room on Bewitched. And during the early days of I Love Lucy, Lucy and Ricky's bedroom doubled as the Mertzes' living room. The set designer(s) created some special panels that concealed the Mertzes' walls and turned them into Lucy and Ricky's bedroom walls.
