View Full Version : Bob Bean in the Sammy Wheeler segment
Viper652 02-09-2010, 12:57 AM Holy crap, Ive never seen a guy so arrogant, cocky, and just so full of himself in a murder segment like this of any kind. No way he did it because no real murderer would act like that in the interview. He knows he didnt do it so he could act crazy and show off.
kadrmas15 02-09-2010, 01:23 AM Well to be honest, Bob Bean, he is a game player, he likes to play emotional games, mind games, etc, the whole thing was a big joke to him. I mean while I do not think he killed Sammy Wheeler I also do not think he was sorry Sammy was murdered either. Of course that is not a crime but it says a lot about him as a person.

Bob is quite popular around here, same with Danny Wheeler AKA Michael Jordan. Bob, Air Wheeler, and Pat were all innocent, but that doesn't stop them from making it an entertaining segment.

It's basically a comedy segment. The tragic thing about it was there really was a person named Sammy Wheeler who was murdered due to a random act of violence.
But everything else in the segment is pure comedy. In fact I know a lot of UM fans put the UFO segments at the top of the list as being some of the most unbelievable segments aired on the program, but the "Sammy Wheeler" segment is right up there on that list for me. In the span of twenty minutes the three people they interviewed for the "Sammy Wheeler" segment take it from being a serious case about an unsolved murder mystery to a comedy piece which leaves the viewer asking "Is this stuff for real?"
Later.
UMfan77 02-09-2010, 02:55 PM That whole segment is a hoot to watch (aside from Sammy Wheeler's tragic murder). Bob Bean's facial expressions and tone of voice is something else... and how about when Danny Wheeler stated that Pat "is not an attractive woman". What a compliment!
DarkDante 03-03-2010, 03:19 AM I just saw the SPIKE Re-Edit of this and damnit they took out Danny's "Michael Jordan" reference. What were they thinking? That makes the whole segment.
They did include a bit of the segment that LIFETIME never broadcasted though which kind of makes up for it. Apparently Danny Wheeler accused Bob Bean of hiring a hitman to murder his brother. In another classic Bob Bean moment, he looks straight in the the camera and says "Do I look like I have the money to hire a hitman?" or something to that effect.
For those wondering they did leave in Danny's "incest" comment. Farina seemed to be getting a little ticked off too with all the allegations. At one point he says something like "If all these allegations weren't enough, Pat came up with a reason why Danny might have wanted his brother dead".
As many times as I've watched that segment it never gets old. On the more serious side they did reveal the name of Sammy's killer, Guy Price and noted he is serving a life sentence for the crime.
Fletch 03-03-2010, 03:43 AM Didn't Bob Bean post here once? Or am I thinking of someone else...?
wiseguy182 03-03-2010, 04:05 AM No Bob Bean never posted here.
I'm usually not a fan of the spike versions, but does anybody have the spike version of this segment?

I just watched the Lifetime version of that segment and Bob Bean comes across as the type of man that any and every woman should avoid. That is definitely one of the stranger segments that I have seen.
pardilia 03-03-2010, 01:02 PM I have the spike episode on my dvr and its hard to erase it. I've watched it twice with my mom now and we were both laughing the whole way through.
They all really showed their true selves...hard to go back to normal after talking that way on national tv.

Have you ever seen the "Lifetime" version? It's a million times better than the heavily edited SPIKE version because they include more material. But yeah I wonder if every Christmas Eve the people at Cosgrove-Meurer open up a bottle of scotch and watch the "Sammy Wheeler" segment for kicks.

No I haven't. I always seemed to miss out on that one!
Clockworkhigh 03-03-2010, 05:14 PM Yeah so I guess they did catch the killer in 1998. Apparently it was an act of random violence. Too bad, because all three suspects could easily be guilty in my book. Bottom line is this, trailer trash tend to stick with their own kind 100% of the time.
I mean really only those types of people would go from calling their future sister in law family to labelling her as "not an attractive woman" within one sentence.

Yeah Danny Wheeler can be something else but one thing I agree with him about is his assessment of Bob Bean. Anyone else think it was odd that once Bean was cleared he tried to get his children to incriminate their mother on videotape for Sam's murder? I always thought that was a bit bizarre, the police apparently did too as they dismissed the boys' testimony as unreliable. I wonder if that was because it showed evidence that they were "coached" into saying these things about Pat to begin with?

Coached for sure. It reminds me of Charlotte Pollis' mother who claims Charlotte's children feared black garbage bags because "mommy died in them". Although I don't blame her mom for trying EVERY angle to prove Paul did it.
Bob Bean isn't someone I would want to be in the same aisle in at the grocery store. A man with weak morals is how I would describe him. Danny seemed like a guy that would end up on Jerry Springer, but he never occured to me as a murderer. Why kill your identical twin brother over an "unnatractive woman"?
For whatever reason I don't think I would ever rule out Bob Bean being involved in the murder. Even though someone was arrested for it already.
By the way Dark Dante, I have wondered this for a long time, who is that vibrant woman in your avatar? Is it a rather young Jane Fonda?
Hambone2421 03-04-2010, 09:20 AM I just watched this episode for the first time yesterday on Spike. I hate to say it because someone died, but I was laughing alot during this segment. Danny Wheeler's accent was hilarious. Especially when he said "coincidence". Bob Bean is just an a$$ hole. I mean, we get that you don't like the guy and all but sheesh dude, don't sit there and mock accusations on your involvement as if you are better than others or higher than this. I will say one thing though, I tend to beleive Bob when it comes to Pat. Didnt she basically accuse everyone in town of murdering Wheeler?
truthbtold 03-05-2010, 03:29 PM Yeah this was a funny one indeed, that Bob Bean is quite a douche. But after watching it all the way through and then seeing the update, it makes you wonder why they aired that much of the segment on spike. I mean, they lead you to beleive that the 3 are serious suspects then you find out that they really had nothing to do with it at all. That shows that spike only aired it for the "entertainment" value. The important thing is that we got to see them all trash eachother on national tv. I feel bad for those kids now. They must be in their late teens or 20's.

It had to be for the entertainment value. And it's not just Spike's version that I say that for, it was also the original version. Why else would this segment have had a commercial break in it? Was it just by coincidence?
They knew what they had. I just wonder how many times the Unsolved Mysteries people had to stop an interview for a break, just so they could laugh. In particular after the revelation that Air Wheeler's family doesn't go in for incest.
Hambone2421 03-05-2010, 05:19 PM As Pat Wheeler said, "Its co-in-sa-dince, co-in-sa-dince, co-in-sa-dince."
starmushrooms 03-06-2010, 01:33 AM That whole segment is a hoot to watch (aside from Sammy Wheeler's tragic murder). Bob Bean's facial expressions and tone of voice is something else... and how about when Danny Wheeler stated that Pat "is not an attractive woman". What a compliment!
That was my favorite part along with, "If Sammy married her, she be like my sister...and my family don't go in for incest'
I can't remember the Air Jordan comment, but I remember seeing this segment years ago and laughing at it. I could have picked any one of those three and said, 'YES, they did it!'
Still one of my favorite segments. The parts you can laugh at take away from the actual story. I'm glad they caught the guy who really did it.
Mastermind 03-06-2010, 07:02 PM Bob Bean is innocent..but I still want him to get the needle.
Someone that obsequious has to have done some type of crime somewhere.
burbqueen 03-07-2010, 01:19 PM I just saw this and I am now in love with the wheeler brother. He was sarcastic, bold and funny. If your reading this Danny wheeler... Call me. Lol!!!
Hambone2421 04-27-2010, 09:01 AM They knew what they had. I just wonder how many times the Unsolved Mysteries people had to stop an interview for a break, just so they could laugh. In particular after the revelation that Air Wheeler's family doesn't go in for incest.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. That was hilarious when he talked about how his family doesn't go for incest. Priceless.

He's got to project as an arsehole. Look at him. He's a troll!
The Dutchman 04-27-2010, 10:14 PM Not only is Bob Bean a miserable person, but he certainly won't be on the "Hunks of UM" thread! :) He is rather homely, and while I haven't seen the segment in a few years, I seem to recall he hunches over during the interview. That guy almost makes Jules Caylor or Gabriel Carriello look like ladies men (at least Jules and Gabriel didn't go around trashing others on their segments).
There appears to be someone on the board who is a cheerleader for Bob Bean, which I get an endless kick out of. Bob Bean needs a friend.
I wonder what anyone from UM, including Robert Stack, thought of this segment. When I first saw it on a Lifetime rerun in 2003, I felt bad finding so much amusement from such a sad story. But these characters were something else, and the great thing about this message board is I realized many more found this segment to be hilarious too, despite the underlying sadness of the story.
I'm going to dust off my video of this tonight! Ol' Jay Leno can't compare to the low monotone of Bob Bean.
Hambone2421 04-28-2010, 09:29 AM I'm going to dust off my video of this tonight! Ol' Jay Leno can't compare to the low monotone of Bob Bean.
While your watching it, just keep in mind that Pat Wheeler's family "doesnt go for incest."
The Dutchman 04-28-2010, 04:55 PM When I got to that part of the segment, where they brought up that Danny Wheeler may have been attracted to Pat Snead, I almost choked on the Oreo I was eating from laughing! That incest comment is just too much.
wiseguy182 04-29-2010, 06:02 AM why is everybody hating on my man Bob Bean? yeah, so he made some accusations in the segment, but haven't alot of people on UM? He accused the same number of people that Pat and Danny did.
I'm not totally sold that he coached his kids. Kids say strange stuff and are too young to realize how what they say might effect other people.
Bob Bean said that he wasn't aware of any potential alibi by Pat, so I think it's very likely he didn't know about Pat and possibly Danny's alibi before his interview for the segment was filmed.
Bob Bean is the man. He served in the military, is a law abiding citizen, speaks calmly and wants a moral environment for his children.

"A local author provides some unique insight on her latest book about an Augusta County murder. Local author Phyllis Campbell was at the Staunton Public Library Wednesday to discuss her crime novel on the 1992 murder of Sammy Wheeler.
It's part of the Talking Book Center's "Help Someone to Read Week." Campbell, who is blind, uses the latest technology in writing her books. She worked with the victim's identical twin brother Danny Wheeler on the project. They are currently looking for a publisher in efforts to release the book."
Someone publish this book!!
Janel "Jaycee" Miller 08-31-2010, 05:32 PM Pat certainly gets insulted A LOT in this segment. I just watched the segment on Lifetime and Bob said something like "I know what I had (Pat) and believe me, I was glad to pass it on."
how about when Danny Wheeler stated that Pat "is not an attractive woman". What a compliment![/QUOTE]
burbqueen 09-01-2010, 02:50 PM I loved this segment. It was so full of wheels off characters and in the end the killer was just some random dude.
TracyLynnS 09-01-2010, 05:31 PM Is this our Sammy Wheeler? http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=46926102 I left him flowers. If it's him, I'm surprised there's not more activity on that memorial site. Not even a photo of the grave marker.
I watched that segment again today (lifetime version) and holy cow! I sure hope the kids involved never saw any version of that segment, but they certainly must have by now.
Bob Bean had his teenage son spying on Sammy and taking pictures of him at 5:30 in the morning. The guy and his twin lived in the same building. How could the teenager, 15 or 16 years old I think, be sure to get the right brother on film disobeying the court order to not live in the same apartment as Bob Bean's younger kids? (The segment pretty much says that Sammy had not defied the order.)
The way that guy swore up and down that all he wanted was a moral environment for his young kids, yet involved his older child in weird spying.... Which could have been very dangerous. What if Sammy Wheeler was a nut? He was 36 years old and Bean's kid was a teenager. IMO, Bean could have been putting his kid in jeopardy of a physical attack or even being killed if Sammy Wheeler had finally "lost it" from all the craziness. Then Bean appears to have coached his younger children into implicating their mother in a murder, and insults her repeatedly on a hugely popular tv show... Gah!
I wonder if the kids ever resented their father manipulating them and talking so horribly about their mother in public. And what a hypocrite. All this fuss was because wanted his kids in a moral environment but he provided pretty much the complete opposite for those kids.
Plus the hiring of the PI to check up on Sammy. Bean sounds like a control freak. I don't think Pat Snead knew what the heck she was getting into being married to that guy and making new little Beans to suffer from their father's behavior. I agree with the earlier poster who said Bean was the kind of guy every woman should learn to steer clear of.
dynoguy88 09-01-2010, 09:42 PM I hate to say it but it's easy to forget that this segment involves a muder investigation. The entire thing is just a showcase of three freaks all blaming each other. And Bob Bean, what a creepy, slimey looking little man. He looks like the kind of guy that would try to lure a child into his car with candy.
wiseguy182 09-02-2010, 01:38 AM Being that the court honored Bob's request, it probably means Bob had a legitimate reason for not wanting Sammy to live in the same apartment as Pat and the kids. They wouldn't have honored the request just to suit Bob's personal whim.
I don't think he went out of his way to insult Pat, it just happened to come up. The only times he insults Pat are when he explains why he isn't upset at her leaving and why doesn't hate Sam, because he was glad their relationship is ending. And for that matter, Danny doesn't have nice things to say about Pat either, stating he didn't think she was a good looking woman and such. Pat and Danny don't come off any better than Bob.
As for the comment about Bob looking like a child abductor, well, I think that is a false statement. For all we know, Bob could act snarky like he did in the interview all the time. Maybe that's his nature.
And I'm Lebron James and I play for the Miami Heat.
(Gotta wonder if the segment was filmed today if Danny would have used a Lebron reference)

Danny Wheeler wouldn't be taking his talents to Pat since they "don't do the incest thing".
He served in the military, is a law abiding citizen, speaks calmly and wants a moral environment for his children.
I never cared for Bob Bean when watching this segment but I must admit you make a convincing point here.
TheCars1986 06-23-2011, 04:16 PM I know Sammy's murder was the result of a random act of violence, but did they ever give a specific reason as to why he was murdered? Was it a robbery gone bad?

I may be wrong but I think he had been sleeping in his car. If that's the case, he was a prime target for those crazy idiots who go around looking for people in similar situations.

Was the killer's intent to rob Sammy, or just flat out murder him?
I have been unable to locate any information online about Sammy's killer. A news article, picture, trial information, anything.

I have a hard time accepting the random act of violence scenario. Never heard of a killer who did not previously have a connection to the victim just walking up to someone sleeping and shooting them unless they had some sort of motive. David Berkowitz and Zodiac walked up to random people and shot them because they were described as 'confrontational' killers who enjoyed seeing the terror on the faces of their victims. But you just don't hear about people walking up to a sleeping stranger and blowing them away unless they were getting something else out of it (money, revenge, etc.).
I do hope a book is published about this case so we can see some of the evidence that was brought to trial. Watching the segment I felt that Bob Bean might have hired someone to make it look like a random act of violence. They mentioned that several people corroborated Bob Beans' alibi at the time of the murder, which is exactly what you would do in a situation where you hired a killer. Also his "coaching" of his kids is suspicious and the timing of the divorce, as Danny pointed out ("just by co-in-sa-dense. SUURE it was, SUUURE it was"). I would admit, though, that in seemingly every case when a contract killer is hired, the truth eventually comes out (for example, the Lita McClinton case. And like the Wheeler murder, the divorce was to be finalized within days of the murder).

The hitman theory is a very attractive scenario, but I doubt that Sammy's killer would have kept quiet about it after apprehended. If he was hired to kill Sammy, I think he would have sang like a bird to squeal on who ordered the hit in an attempt to strike a plea bargain.

I agree that if Price was a hitman, then it is doubtful that he would keep his mouth shut. However, I think that the 'random of violence' scenario is even more implausible. Someone killed Sammy for a reason.
TracyLynnS 10-18-2011, 06:25 PM Just by co-in-see-dence, I happened to watch my DVD of the bean/wheeler segment today, then got see the spike version when it was aired just now.
On the sad side of this tale, I thought I'd let everyone know that the link I posted last year to the findagrave site is "our" Sammy. Earlier this year another member there put up a photo of his marker.

I agree.I kind of get the feeling UM aired this segment for entertainment value only, seeing as LE had already said they thought it was a random act of violence.

in many states a parent can specify that they do not want their children to be living with (or in this case, very close to)/visiting a bf/gf of the other parent that they aren't married to.I was able to do this without proving anything on the other person and my kid's other parent,so that my kids were not allowed to visit their other parent as long as he was living with someone he wasn't married to.
I think this was the implication here;they were sharing the same apt. building, and it was morally deemed 'too close for comfort'.Nothing else needs to be proved;the moral request is enough.
That said, this request would have been nullified and void and the kids would have been able to visit freely/live with them both, etc., once Pat and Sammy were married, which the segment indicated they were going to do shortly before the murder,so it makes it more understandable as to why the suspicion fell on Bob Bean.
scc1222 10-19-2011, 01:41 AM I just saw this and I am now in love with the wheeler brother. He was sarcastic, bold and funny. If your reading this Danny wheeler... Call me. Lol!!!
rofl..were he and Sammy identical twins, anyone know? It was hard to tell from the pic,but I thought maybe they were. Then I had to wonder why the heck Pat would say someone said Danny was in love with her...I got the feeling it was 'hey,I can't have your brother,so now I'll just go for you!'
I bet Sammy is the type of person who is looking down from heaven and is getting a good laugh at all this. :)

they all deserve some kind of entertainment award!
RedBasket 10-22-2011, 04:22 PM The bad part is that there are children involved, and a loss of life, obviously.
But Bob Bean is just the most smug person I have ever run across. I would love to play Scrabble with him or some random game so I could win handily and wipe that smug look off his face.
WishfulDreamer 03-22-2013, 03:46 AM I know people think all three interviewees are ridiculous, but I liked Danny Wheeler and understand his anger. I am kind of surprised UM didn't edit out the Chicago Bulls stuff. I also agree with his assessment of Bob Bean.
Bob Bean was just so darn smarmy. I also didn't find it very believable that he was like "I didn't dislike Sammy at all" when the other two interviewees (despite problems between them) said otherwise.
It's been a while since I watched and I don't remember Pat's interview being as noteworthy. I'd have to watch again.

I always thought Danny came off the best of the bunch. He had every reason to be angry, since his brother's death was unsolved and because two other people were accusing him of committing the crime. He was spot on when he called Bean "sick" for filming his kids. Who does that?

If that is true that's a sad statement. It makes it seem as though simply having a girlfriend or boyfriend is "immoral" just because they haven't had a wedding. Yet you can marry any scumbag you want and its deemed "moral" to expose your children to that environment, simply because a marriage is involved.
I'm sure your situation was justified and you did what you had to but I would hope extenuating circumstances are taken into effect by family law courts and they simply don't go by the "marriage is always good for children, no marriage is always bad" ethos.

I'm sure your situation was justified and you did what you had to but I would hope extenuating circumstances are taken into effect by family law courts and they simply don't go by the "marriage is always good for children, no marriage is always bad" ethos.
yes that's true,I certainly think family courts should look at the whole picture when someone marries another that the other parent has concerns about.I still wouldn't have wanted my kids to be around this person had their dad married her.Thankfully it didn't come to that.Marriage would have not suddenly dissolved all the concerns I had about her being around them. The best I could do was to use the moral request that they not be allowed to visit.
Anyway, someone had mentioned that they thought Sammy must have done something to implement this, and my point was that no,he need not have done anything wrong, simply the moral request was enough.
UMFaninMD 03-24-2013, 01:08 AM I always thought Danny came off the best of the bunch. He had every reason to be angry, since his brother's death was unsolved and because two other people were accusing him of committing the crime. He was spot on when he called Bean "sick" for filming his kids. Who does that?
:yeahthat Yes, he didn't mince words when it came to Bob and Pat and along with that now infamous Chicago Bulls remark, he's probably one of the most honest people interviewed on UM.
Victoria81 09-30-2013, 09:26 AM I just watched this again....I must have miss the Chicago Bulls remark???
TheCars1986 09-30-2013, 10:22 AM I just watched this again....I must have miss the Chicago Bulls remark???
If it was the Farina version, they edit Danny's line, "Yeah and I'm Michael Jordan and I play for the Chicago Bulls" out.
bluejazz87 11-24-2013, 03:21 AM I always lose it when I hear Wheeler say "Sure it was...sure it was...and I'm Michael Jordan. I used to play for the Chicago Bulls". Hilarious.
TheCars1986 11-25-2013, 10:52 AM I always lose it when I hear Wheeler say "Sure it was...sure it was...and I'm Michael Jordan. I used to play for the Chicago Bulls". Hilarious.
I always thought it even more hilarious when the actor portraying him overacts in the scene where he's screaming about "going to go get Bob Bean!"
wiseguy182 11-26-2013, 04:12 AM I don't usually watch the Spike versions, but I had heard there was a quote from Bean in that version that wasn't on the original, and I finally got around to watching the Spike version yesterday. Bob Bean: "you have to pay for a hitman. The FBI investigated my finances, and I didn't have quuuuiiite enough money." And then the famous Bob Bean smirk. Ha! Finally some new Bean material to laugh at. He's one of the best.
I always found this line from Pat Snead sort of amusing, I don't think it's been mentioned on here before. This was right after she stated she initially didn't think anyone but Bean could be involved. "Since Sam's death, I've had time....lots of time, as you know..." Heh. I think I do know what she was getting at.
I could have swore there was a huge, older thread on this. There has to be, given how popular this segment is.
MegtheEgg86 11-26-2013, 01:56 PM I always thought it even more hilarious when the actor portraying him overacts in the scene where he's screaming about "going to go get Bob Bean!"
YES. I think he says "Bob Bean" at least five times in the span of thirty seconds.
I also liked "Bob Bean's teenage son from a previous marriage" who was "just takin' some pictures".
This segment is gold.
MegtheEgg86 11-26-2013, 02:07 PM I agree that if Price was a hitman, then it is doubtful that he would keep his mouth shut. However, I think that the 'random of violence' scenario is even more implausible. Someone killed Sammy for a reason.
I see Sammy's whereabouts the night and early morning of his murder as supportive of two conflicting theories: either someone knew Sam well enough to know he'd be in that exact location in that national forest at that exact time, or Sam's presence and that of some nutbag staying in the park just so happened to unfortunately intersect. Parks and national forests attract all kinds from all over. So I don't know what to think here. What does bother me is that there aren't any reports of anything being stolen from the vehicle. I suppose it's possible that some moron would simply shoot a sleeping person in his car just to shoot him, but it's senseless and difficult to reconcile.
I actually do think Danny makes a good point on the timing of the event. It's at the very least an intriguing coincidence.
TheCars1986 11-26-2013, 03:12 PM That's the most aggrivating part about this case, the update says it was a "random act of violence", but they offer no other information as to whether or not any valuables were taken and what exactly the motive was.
WishfulDreamer 11-26-2013, 08:07 PM YES. I think he says "Bob Bean" at least five times in the span of thirty seconds.
Other people find that part hilarious, too? Glad to hear it! I never laughed much over the Chicago Bulls part, but this reenactment cracked me up because of the way he overacts and storms off. ''I told you long ago it was Bob Bean!'' or something along those lines. But...it had just happened.
Of course this is a very sad case and it's really tragic what happened to Sammy. But the reenactments and the behavior of Bob Bean in his interview...How could you interview someone with that smirk? I would probably start crying trying not to laugh.
JWalker78 11-26-2013, 09:42 PM They say it was a random act of violence? Sure it was...sure it was... And I'm Michael Jordan, I used to play for the Chicago Bulls.
MegtheEgg86 11-27-2013, 04:17 AM That's the most aggrivating part about this case, the update says it was a "random act of violence", but they offer no other information as to whether or not any valuables were taken and what exactly the motive was.
Totally. It's almost as though ultimately Sammy's death was sort of an afterthought. As dynoguy88 pointed out a few pages back, it's easy to forget there was a murder involved here throughout all the finger-pointing and blaming (it's difficult to deny this was ultimately the main focus of the segment). Once you get past the hilarity, it's very sobering.
Someone else brought up the fact that there's really not a whole lot of information outside UM on Sammy's murder or Guy Price, the individual who is in prison for the crime now. According to the Spike update to this segment, a witness claimed to have seen Price kill Sammy. Was this person an associate of Price or just a bystander? I'd love more information on that.
TheCars1986 11-27-2013, 10:38 AM According to the Spike update to this segment, a witness claimed to have seen Price kill Sammy. Was this person an associate of Price or just a bystander? I'd love more information on that.
Wow I missed that tidbit when I saw the update. Seems more likely to have been an associate of his, who was with him and ID'ed him to the authorities. According to the UM wiki, Sammy's family hired a P.I. who found the witness. Seems unlikely that it was a bystander. The UM wiki also says that Sammy was robbed, so maybe it was a simple case of robbery.
Mystery Man 01-21-2014, 12:03 PM Well, it's a shame what happened to Sammy, and very sad. I'm glad they caught the guy.
That being said...this is probably the funniest segment they ever aired. "She was like a sister to me, and I don't go for incest!" "Co-in-si-dance. Suurreeee." I could kinda understand his frustration, though. Bob did look guilty, but I mean, "do I look like I have the money to hire a hitman?"
mikewho 01-21-2014, 03:18 PM Yeah I think there's more to this than just being random, especially with all the drama that was going on.
WishfulDreamer 01-21-2014, 08:46 PM Bob did look guilty, but I mean, "do I look like I have the money to hire a hitman?"
Did he really say that?! I must have been watching an edited version. I think I would be rolling on the ground laughing if I saw that portion of the interview. I just can't take Bob Bean seriously. At all.

Someone will have to verify this because I haven't yet seen it, but I think that particularly line was actually on the Farina version. It's not on mine and I'm 98% sure it's a Lifetime recording, but I'd have to check.
As much play as this particular segment has gotten around the community over the past twelve years or so, if that line were on either the NBC or Lifetime versions you KNOW it'd be quoted like crazy.
TracyLynnS 01-21-2014, 10:23 PM "Do I look like I have the money to hire a hit man?" I dunno if he ever said that, but he could afford a Private Investigator, so.....
Quote from the narration of the segment:
"Sammy Wheeler was shot six times in the head and upper torso.
Both the local sheriff's department and the FBI investigated.
They quickly determined the killer had gone to great lengths to clean the crime scene.
All shell casings and fingerprints had been removed and an amateurish attempt had been made to destroy the evidence."
After they discovered Sammy's wallet was missing, that's when they decided it was just a run of the mill, ordinary, random act of violence.
Where are they getting that idea? Maybe if they shot the guy and stole his wallet, but this perpetrator went to "great lengths to clean the crime scene". They picked up all their shell casings and wiped all the fingerprints off the car. IMO, it looks like a hit.
And I don't call the open gas tank stuffed with papers and tissues and using a cigarette for a long wick so you can get away, "an amateurish attempt". IMO, an amateur would just toss some flammable liquid around and throw a match on it. What amateur takes the time to think out making a wick so they have plenty of time to get away before the fireball ignites?
Not random, imo. He was targeted.
wiseguy182 01-22-2014, 02:27 AM I don't usually watch the Spike versions, but I had heard there was a quote from Bean in that version that wasn't on the original, and I finally got around to watching the Spike version yesterday. here's the exact quote from an earlier post of mine.
Stack7 02-28-2014, 01:58 AM Seen this segment years ago, and just watched it again on one of the UM lifetime episodes I dvr'd. I still can't rule out Bob Bean. He's definitely guilty of something.

Sammy Wheeler's murderer was found and according to UM, it was a random act of violence. All three "suspects" featured on the UM segment were ruled out.

I know. I seen the update. It's just Bob Bean's demeanor and the way he said he didn't have enough money for a hitman makes me doubt that he was not involved somehow in the murder.

He was a scumbag on the interview, but he did have an airtight alibi that was checked and he was ruled out by authorities.
JannTosh 03-12-2014, 10:49 PM so why was his 13 year old son taking pictures of their house?
MegtheEgg86 03-12-2014, 11:20 PM so why was his 13 year old son taking pictures of their house?
I thought it was an attempt to record evidence that Sammy Wheeler was violating the court order Bob Bean had secured against Pat forbidding Sammy from living with Bob's children. Bob either didn't want his children living in a cohabitation situation, or just wanted to make life difficult for his ex-wife. Or maybe a little of both.

I always thought Bean was just being vindictive and spiteful by doing this.
mdl1981 03-14-2014, 01:42 AM I always thought Bean was just being vindictive and spiteful by doing this.
100% agreed. He is guilty of being vindictive, spiteful, a jerk, a smart ass etc. Even in his interview, he always has that stupid smirk/half smile thing going on. We all know people like this and we all want to punch them in the face.
Big difference between being those things, and being involved in murdering someone.
JannTosh 03-15-2014, 04:38 PM Any reason why they cut out the "he hired a hit man" theory and responses from the Stack version but restored them for the Farina version ?
wiseguy182 03-15-2014, 11:32 PM Any reason why they cut out the "he hired a hit man" theory and responses from the Stack version but restored them for the Farina version ?
Don't know for sure, but the original segment itself was a pretty long one for UM. I don't know the exact running time, but they had to break into 2 parts.
pi son 05-02-2014, 09:30 AM I'm totally new here and am pretty close to one of the players in this case. I was wondering if anyone here could send me a copy of this segment as I have never seen it. Any help would be appreciated.
Hambone2421 05-06-2015, 12:43 PM I realize the case is now closed as it was determined that the killer (I do not know his name) murdered Sammy in a random act of violence. I wonder if authorities researched any possible link this killer may have had to Bob Bean? He was certainly a vindictive nut case and the fact that his soon to be ex wife's fiancé was murdered two days before the divorce was to be finalized certainly couldn't have upset him that much.
LilMissKryssy 05-06-2015, 01:16 PM I don't think it had anything to do with Bob Bean. Yes, he was came off as an egotistical self involved condescending sarcastic jerkoff but no, I don't think the murder had anything to do with Bob Bean. I think he was egotistical in that he wanted to make life hell for his ex that left him (i.e. His son taking pictures, getting a court order that Sammy couldn't stay in the house and lastly taping his children saying their mom had been in the mountains when Sammy was shot) but I don't think murder was his MO. I think he took advantage of the opportunity to slander the hell out of his ex as he liked to make her life more difficult for leaving him but that's it IMO. He just seems like that kind of guy who thinks being condescending, sarcastic and dry makes him seem more intelligent or above others but in reality he's just an insecure, vengeful moron
RightOnDude 05-06-2015, 10:34 PM Bob Bean was "happy to pass along" Pat to Sammy. I totally believed him when he said that.
Hambone2421 05-07-2015, 08:42 AM Bob Bean was "happy to pass along" Pat to Sammy. I totally believed him when he said that.
Most exes feel the same way. Not sure everyone would go on national TV and say it though.
Imarriedakiller 08-08-2015, 04:33 PM Ok here is the low down. Kirk Bell and Guy Price were drunk and had guns in the car. They were driving around to places they hung out at when younger. Kirk was their star witnedd. He says Guy did the shooting. Guy said Kirk did. The only reason they caught them was Kirk got high and drunk and was running his mouth. He turned on is best friend. Guy is in prison and has been for 15 years. He is eligible for parole. He had never been violent before. There were. 3030 bullets and 22 bullets removed from the body. Guy had a public defender who was pretty bad. The judge even corrected him several times in the court room. Both Guy and Kirk know Bob i am betting. Bob was in the national guard with Guy Price's dad. Those boys grew up around those men at the armory. Kirk testified that the. 22 was Guys dads antique revolver. Bullists proved it was not. The only way the 3030 was tied to the scene was a dead cow in the area.
Cori aka ChrisSCrush 08-09-2015, 01:59 AM Obviously Bob was lying and what motive would he have unless he was in fact involved?
justins5256 08-09-2015, 01:55 PM Interesting new revelation here.
For what it's worth, I've always wavered in my beliefs on this.
On one hand, considering the nature of the crazy accusations, I think it would be entirely fitting if NONE of the parties interviewed on UM ultimately proved to be involved in Sammy Wheeler's death.
On the other hand, there is a chance that some of the crazy allegations may have been true.
I hate to say it, but I've always had a difficult time assessing this case in a serious fashion because of all the BS surrounding it.
RightOnDude 08-09-2015, 11:01 PM you married a killer? Which one? Are you saying Bob Bean was somehow involved or...?
TheCars1986 08-10-2015, 07:55 AM Wouldn't surprise me if Bean was involved somehow, airtight alibi or not.
LethalMatthew1996 08-10-2015, 10:07 AM Can anyone send me this episode? I would love to see it :)
TIA
LooksLikeCRicci 08-10-2015, 01:23 PM Guy had a public defender who was pretty bad.
Ugh. I realize I'm not a public defender anymore, but I still hate seeing those words written. I feel like defendants often forget that their defense attorney is only as good as the facts/information they have. They're attorneys, not magicians. You can't wave a magic wand and make someone not guilty of a crime...
I digress.
TheCars1986 08-10-2015, 06:50 PM You can't wave a magic wand and make someone not guilty of a crime...
I feel like this should be added in the Jeffrey MacDonald and Darlie Routier threads.
charmedsignora 08-11-2015, 12:41 PM Bob Bean and Pat obviously had to stay in each other's lives even after Bob accused her of Sammy's murder, because they had kids in common. I wonder if Pat (and Danny) ever forgave him for accusing them of murdering Sammy.
But then again, this is Danny we're talking about. "Bob Bean? Apologize? I'm Michael Jordan, too. I used to play for the Chicago Bulls."
Imarriedakiller 08-11-2015, 03:15 PM I did say that the attorney was corrected multiple times by the judge. That has nothing to do with the facts. That has to do with his skill as an attorney. It is in the transcript of the trial. If it had been once or twice I might have agreed but it was many time and if you had read the transcript you would understand my disgust.
As for which one I was married to? Guy Price and I were married in April of 1992. We were on our way to Germany and stopped to spend time with his parents while traveling. He is not and never was a violent man. Kirk Bell on the other hand, the prosecutions "Star Witness" was a wife beater and child molester. Not to mention a habitual drug user. Guy was none of these things. He is by nature a defender type person. At the time of the trial he had never been arrested for anything. Their claim that he was a violent offender was just stupid and a lie. He was an active Army soldier. He was also a veteran of Desert Storm. At the time of the crime he was also very severly PSTD. We tried to get a PSTD specialist to evaluate him but the judge nixed that real quick. They wanted a fast quick trial and they got it.
These were two stupid old boys drunk with guns and they both should have gone to jail for involuntary man slaughter. Instead Staunton, Virginia has a murderer running loose. Kirk was even linked to the murder of a woman down in Florida where he lived when he ran after the trial. The fact that they probably knew Bob has bothered me a lot. They might have known that was Sammy's vehicle and shot at it to vandalize it. I could really see Kirk doing that. Once Sammy was shot with the deer rifle I can see these two drunk idiots scared to death. Guy and I had just got married. I was pregnant with our first child. His military career was pretty good. He was also PSTD. He went into military mode. I can see him doing it. He is a very methodical person. It was never violent it was stupid. If you have questions I will answer what I can.
LilMissKryssy 08-11-2015, 04:47 PM Wait, I'm confused what does this have to do with Sammy Wheeler's case?

Guy Price was the person convicted of killing Sammy Wheeler.

For me it's a close second to Stack3:16
Cori aka ChrisSCrush 08-12-2015, 02:33 AM I for one never really believed it was Danny, and was glad it turned out not to be. Cases of anyone killing their own identical twin must be rare indeed.
The reason Bob Bean was such a sleaze is as Danny stated, coercing his own "little infant children" into lying that they'd witnessed a murder (or claiming that they had said this to him) in order to frame Danny when none of them were anywhere near at the time!
Judyhymesisalive 04-07-2016, 11:43 AM I know i shouldn't joke about this but that segment really cracks me up. The reenactment with the ' Bob Bean it was BOB BEAN; BOB BEAN DID IT' and then Sammy Wheeler with his Michael Jordan comment and his makes me wonder comments.

bean1014 04-15-2016, 07:41 PM I am Bob Bean's granddaughter. Until actually just today I had no clue this existed. People are on here saying he's creepy and smarmy and (I am probably not a very good family member for saying this) I am just sitting here laughing. God, I am laughing so hard. He is, he really is. Christmas is really uncomfy. I wasn't going to make my presence known, but then it got too real:
The bad part is that there are children involved, and a loss of life, obviously.
But Bob Bean is just the most smug person I have ever run across. I would love to play Scrabble with him or some random game so I could win handily and wipe that smug look off his face.
He'd probably enjoy himself. He loves Scrabble. We always play when we go over to his house...he's a gracious winner, but he always accuses other people of cheating when he's losing.

Long time lurker- over 10 years. I had to create an account when I saw that lo and behold, Bob Bean's granddaughter has joined the discussion. I am over here laughing my ass off. RIP Sammy Wheeler, he is in a better place and my prayers go out to his loved ones...but this story was one of the most hilarious thing I have ever watched on tv.

I hope so. As much as I enjoy chuckling at his one-liners, I always liked Danny Wheeler and I felt very bad for him. It must have been so traumatic to lose his twin brother like that, and I don't blame him for being suspicious of Bean.
Judyhymesisalive 04-16-2016, 04:34 PM Yeah i can't blame him either! Before this case was solved I'm sorry to say but i definitely pointed the finger at Bob Bean! Is Bob Bean still alive?

I found his telephone number, called him and left a voicemail. Felt kind of bad afterward, I sincerely hope I didn't invade his privacy. I said I wanted to interview him on the case for an online messageboard update. If he doesn't call, I won't call him back.
PM me if you want to know how he sounded on his vm message, LOL!

NYSleuth 04-19-2016, 05:34 PM So he is still alive? Yes i want to know what he sounded like lol has he called back?
He is still alive and sadly, he has not called back. I actually felt bad after calling; I really hope I didn't offend him in any way. I did try to sound as polite and professional as possible. And I left my real tel #; as a woman, I hope he wasn't too creeped out, lol.
On his VM, he sounded exactly as he did on he UM segment, same heavy Southern drawl and everything.
Oh yeah, he mentioned that he was not interested in speaking with you if you were 'some telemarketer or anyone like that'. That made me chuckle. LOL
I'll not call back, out of respect for his privacy. ;)
charmedsignora 04-19-2016, 07:47 PM Even though the Sammy Wheeler case has been solved, it continues to fascinate me because these people are so interesting. Bob said that he went to court to stop Sammy from living with Pat, but a few days after Sammy was murdered, Sammy and Pat were going to be married. What was the point of being married if you couldn't live together? Why was Bob on the warpath about "protecting" his children from Sammy-- what had Sammy done?
I think I'm missing something here.
wiseguy182 04-20-2016, 01:27 AM I can't imagine Bob Bean would have any desire to bring up an ugly, old issue. He has probably long since moved on with his life.
And since we're on the subject, I also don't think he would have any desire to visit a message board where most people think he is involved in some way, even after it's been proved he was not.
Judyhymesisalive 04-20-2016, 03:46 AM I used to think he was before it was proven he wasn't but i believe he wasn't. I just liked his segment and it is one of my faves lol

Far Off Promise 04-22-2016, 01:22 AM I always felt he was just trolling the UM viewers because he knew he wasn't involved at all with Sammy's death.
To be honest, in hindsight, it's kind of refreshing to see that someone gave it back who actually wasn't the criminal. Well played, Mr. Bean.
bean1014 06-02-2016, 09:47 AM I will gladly send you a copy if you would be so kind as to share some more stories of your grandfather with us. He's pretty much a legend around here. :)
Oh goodness, please do. To answer other questions, he does not have a copy as far as I know, and I'm positive our family doesn't. He doesn't know about this, again as far as I know. He's not an internet person really. If he did I can't imagine he'd be pleased, and I know for a fact his son was not. No sense of humor.
He's a good grandpa as far as they go. We're not close, but he's pleasant and we do things together when we visit him. He tends to irritate people and it is embarrassing to go out together sometimes when he makes a big deal of things and has words with like cashiers or ladies at banks. Other than that, and the fact that he is just a little creepy, almost going through the motions while being devoid of emotion, things are normalish. He gets married and divorced so fast that it is rare I meet any wife or girlfriend more than once, and all their faces and names barely register. He then spends lots of time at every get-together complaining about each ex wife. But he's always been good about spending time, he takes us to the museum or the zoo.
Then again, sometimes when we bring a friend along on the trip he hugs her and calls her "sweetheart" like he calls the rest of us, leading me to believe that he actually can't tell us apart or even realize that there is an extra 'grandkid' (there are six of us.)
I don't have a lot of digital copies of pictures of him, but here is one when my baby sister was born in 2013:

Yes, it is.
TheCars1986 06-02-2016, 10:20 AM Creepy and smarmy confirmed.
wiseguy182 06-03-2016, 01:44 AM Oh goodness, please do.
PM me your address and I'll pop it in the mail. :)

I have always spoke very highly of your father on here. Please tell him I think he's a hero for helping solve this case and his military service. I know that some people have issued a lot of negative comments about him on here and it's unfortunate that they would base their whole opinion of him on a few comments made on television. I guess it doesn't occur to some people to be embarrassed by what they say, or to think twice before clicking the "submit reply" button.
sdb4884 06-03-2016, 10:15 AM Thanks for the insights bean1014 :)
mozartpc27 06-04-2016, 12:00 AM I can't believe somebody called him.
Boundaries, people!
XTremeInvestigator 04-21-2017, 02:47 PM I just saw the SPIKE Re-Edit of this and damnit they took out Danny's "Michael Jordan" reference. What were they thinking? That makes the whole segment.
Ok, for you, and all the other fans :)
"Sure it was. Sure it was. What a coh-incidence. WHAT a coh-incidence. Sure it was.
....
And I'm Michael Jordan.
(you think he's done)
And I play for the Chicago Bulls"
ROFL!!
My wife and I love that. Actually her favorite that she busted out loud was, do you remember when they are cutting the camera back and forth from the lady (I think his wife) back to that guy, (is it Sammy or bobby?) and they are like talking smack about each other?
Woman: Well, its simple really. I mean, he wanted what he couldn't have. He totally lusted over me.
Camera fast cuts to:
Man: I never thought Barbara was an attractive woman. Like ever.
LOL That episode NEVER gets old.
Hope you guys enjoyed my imitation. I need to do audio files for you guys.
RedBasket 04-21-2017, 03:00 PM I love that episode too!!! So smirky, so white-trashy!!! Bob Bean has to be, without question, one of the most unpleasant people ever profiled. And we are talking about a show that has featured the Boston Strangler, the DeFeo family and Ed Gein. I mean, really!!!
JannTosh 04-21-2017, 03:38 PM I don't know what it is about Bob Bean but I kind of like him
ramirez412001 02-11-2018, 06:35 PM He only posted once on Facebook in 2011, and he was happy to pass it on, okay?
5thBeatle 02-17-2021, 08:46 AM Just rewatched this episode for the first time in a few years. Peacock TV has all the episodes of Unsolved Mysteries. This one kept the Micheal Jordan line lol.
Ms Nevenka 06-11-2021, 11:22 AM I just read that Sammy Wheeler’s killer, Guy Price, was paroled in March, 2020, due to COVID. Excuse my language, but WTF?
How could they let this creep out? Someone who preyed upon a most innocent victim; a man sleeping in his truck! This makes me angry beyond words. 😡

No reason was given either. Which is astounding to me.
TheCars1986 01-22-2025, 10:27 AM The segment was filmed at Danny Wheeler's old house located on 1215 Walnut Street in Staunton, VA. If you go around the corner, you can see that they used the same house (https://www.google.com/maps/@38.1506827,-79.0881698,3a,20.7y,162.89h,91.79t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1sKlGy9ca_LZbFKhvTNlyvqA!2e0!6shttps:%2F%2Fstreetviewpixels-pa.googleapis.com%2Fv1%2Fthumbnail%3Fcb_client%3Dmaps_sv.tactile%26w%3D900%26h%3D600%26pitch%3D-1.793440837865461%26panoid%3DKlGy9ca_LZbFKhvTNlyvqA%26yaw%3D162.89274195794974!7i13312!8i6656?entry=ttu&g_ep=EgoyMDI1MDExNS4wIKXMDSoASAFQAw%3D%3D) in the reenactment.
Stratego 02-09-2025, 09:46 PM Not sure why people are being so harsh on Danny Wheeler. To me, it seemed this man was frustrated the killer of his twin brother was getting away with murder and I can't blame him for thinking the perpetrator was someone known to Sammy. Sure, his has a sort of warped sense of humour, but I've known people who will joke about macabre stuff and it may be just a coping mechanism and a way to vent his feelings. Danny was probably the only one who truly cared about Sammy and solving the case
