Oldest Duggar Sons Help Save Child's Life Following Car Accident
Wed Feb 3, 2:50 PM PST
Joshua Duggar, of TLC's "19 Kids and Counting" family, is being hailed as a hero after helping to save a little girl's life following a car accident outside of his car dealership in Springdale, Ark.
Joshua - the oldest of Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar's brood -- was at work on January 28 when three cars rear-ended each other outside his workplace, according to local news station 40/29 TV.
"I thought, 'Oh, fender bender. No big deal,'" Joshua told the local news station. "It happens quite often here actually. [Then] I realized there was a little girl."
Joshua rushed outside and found 6-year-old Maddye Plascensia sitting in the front seat of one of the cars not breathing.
He and his brother, John, immediately called 911 and brought the child into their office where they started performing CPR.
"The little girl was unconscious and not breathing," Joshua said. "We realized there was something blocking her airway. She had been eating chicken nuggets when the accident happened and it caused a blockage of the airway."
Paramedics arrived on scene, and along with the help of the Duggar brothers, were able to revive Maddye.
She remains hospitalized in critical condition at Arkansas Children's Hospital in Little Rock, Ark., but her family is just thankful that the reality star acted so quickly.
"He is the hero here," Maddye's uncle, Philip Pepe, told the news station. "He deserves a lot of credit for what he did and I thank him from the bottom of my heart."
However, Joshua - who has a three-month-old daughter of his own with wife Anna - was quick to deflect any of the credit.
"The Springfield Paramedics did a phenomenal job. I was just a piece of the puzzle, a very small piece that really helped to save Maddye's life," he said. "I'm just grateful to be a part of it."
Duggar patriarch, Jim Bob, also offered praise for his sons' quick thinking.
"They recognized us and were thanking us for Josh and John helping to save little Maddye's life," Jim Bob told People. "I am so proud of my two oldest sons who responded so quickly in helping to save this little girl."
Maddye is currently at the same hospital where Michelle Duggar gave birth to the family's 19th child, Josie Brooklyn, prematurely in December. The infant, who weighed 1 lb., 6 oz. at birth, is still in intensive care at the hospital.
