This is all GREAT NEWS!! I only hope that the I Love Lucy movie isn't that same one that aired on TV several years back because that was nothing but a Desi bashing and I was not happy!

No Hushgirl, it's an unreleased film from 1953. Desilu edited 3 episodes together, filmed some new footage, and was going to release as a theatrical film. When Lucy and Desi signed to do The Long, Long Trailer they shelved the film to avoid conflict.

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Love_Lucy_(film) for some additional info.

I am glad that CBS saw the wisdom in releasing this as its own DVD. For those of us who already bought every season, but were not gonna double dip (or triple dip -us VHS buyers too) with the complete series set, this is great!

So Lucy Calls the President is coming out in April too??

Yes, I think it is April 6, or some where around the first of the month. I know it's before the ILL Movie, so April is gearing up to be a great Lucy month!

...Desi thought it would be a good idea to take three episodes from season one, and re-edit them into a theatrical movie; however, because they were filmed in front of a live studio audience (and their reactions couldn't be eliminated from the soundtrack), the movie's "framework" featured a "typical" (fictional) married couple visiting the "Desilu Playhouse" [at General Service Studios], observing the show from the studio audience as it was being "filmed"- complete with announcer Roy Rowan and Desi's "warm-up" for the audience before "filming" began. The episodes that were chosen for the "movie" were "The Benefit", "Breaking the Lease" [the soundtrack of that episode was also used as a "test" for a proposed radio version of the series in February 1952], and "The Ballet"; special "transition" sequences were also filmed to provide "seamless" links from one episode into the next one, making it appear the studio [and theatrical] audience spent about 90 minutes watching all three episodes in a row, instead of just "one".

The movie got about as far as a "sneak preview" in Bakersfield, California in early 1953 before MGM insisted that Lucy & Desi "shelve" the film- they didn't want any "competition" for the movie the Arnazes were making for them, which became "The Long Long Trailer" (1954). Desilu film editor Dann Cahn, who supervised the assemblage of the "movie", apparently had posession of one of the only survivng prints of the film, and it was "rediscovered" in 2001. Six years later, it was finally seen in wide release...on DVD.
