It doesn't look good today for fans still waiting for All In The Family & The Jeffersons to be completed on DVD.

Sony Pictures to lay-off 450 employees: Report
2 Feb 2010, 1459 hrs IST, PTI

NEW YORK: Sony Pictures Entertainment, a division of Sony Corp, is planning to lay-off about 450 employees, or about 6.5 per cent of its current
work force, in the next few weeks, says a media report.

Attributing to a memo by Sony Pictures co-chairmen Michael Lynton and Amy Pascal, The Wall Street Journal said, the company is planning to lay-off about 450 employees in the next few weeks.

The report said that the majority of the layoffs are expected to hit the studio's home-entertainment and formation-technology departments, but nearly all divisions are expected to feel an impact to some extent, which includes motion pictures, television production and corporate.

"Most of the layoffs are expected to fall in the US and take place by the first week in March," it added.

After the current round of job cut, studio's head count would stand at about 6,300. In addition, the studio would not fill about 100 jobs that are currently open.

The company's business has been hit by digital piracy and the impact of social-media services that have sometimes
undermined studios' marketing efforts.

DVD sales in the US has seen declined 13 per cent to $8.73 billion against last year, putting a major dent in the
studios' bottom-line, the report said attributing to Adams Media Research.

This really sucks! And I think not many fans bought All In The Family & The Jeffersons on DVD. It looks like more fans bought Bewitched & I Dream Of Jeannie on DVD and that is why those sets were completed, but with today's breaking news, I'm afraid now that we may never see the remaining seasons of All in the Family & The Jeffersons released on DVD. Just another reminder that we are really living in a bad time!

Breaking News!

Sony doesn't have to be the one to release the shows!

There's this wonderful thing called "licensing", and if another company, like Shout Factory or Mill Creek or MPI or Timeless were to think that a show like AITF, The Jeffersons, or The Nanny could sell well enough for them to make a profit, they could possibly license that show from Sony and release the discs!

How do you think Adam-12 continued on DVD? Or Son of the Beach? Or The Facts of Life?

Facts of Life is not apart of Sony anymore???

Sony still owns the show, but they are not releasing the next season(s) of the show on DVD.

Shout Factory, a fine company, licensed the rights to release The Facts of Life on DVD. So, after a nearly four year wait, The Facts of Life season 4 is coming out on DVD this May, released by Shout Factory, not Sony.

This could conceivably happen to any show that is stalled. In fact, it's already happened to shows that I mentioned earlier... Adam 12, Leave it to Beaver, Son of the Beach, Simon and Simon...

Yeah I hope Shout will also get the rights to Diffrent Strokes? Hopefully the news of Diffrent Strokes season 3 being release on DVD by Shout will come in any day now?
And so keep you're fingers cross for news of All In The Family as well?

There was a blurb in a column on digitalbits.com that Sony is starting to look in the area of MOD (manufacture on demand). This is a process where DVDs are offered exclusively on websites and not in stores. Many titles are getting released through the Warner Archives for example that probably wouldn't get released if we had to count on the brick and mortar stores.

Continue to be patient and hope that if they go in this direction, hopefully they will start to offer the remaining seasons of some of these stalled series.

I am glad that Shout has picked up the Facts of Life, and I hope that they will do the same for All In the Family, Maude, the Jeffersons, Diff'rent Strokes, Who's the Boss, and 227. I hate Sony and I will never do business with them again.

It's really not looking good at all for all the owned SONY shows that still need to be completed on DVD. And what makes you think that a company like Shout will take over when we are living in a recession?

Uh... the fact that Shout just took over releasing The Facts of Life and Leave it to Beaver, and announced new releases for both shows coming later this year? Shows, BTW, that haven't had a new release in 3-4 years.

Kinda like All in the Family.

Uhm, that's all fine & dandy! But you fail to realize that those deals for Shout to take over those other shows was planned out & finalized a couple of years ago whn finance was not an issue. We are talking about now "today-2010" where times are really bad & getting worse by the minute!

Uh... no.

If the Shout deals for these shows had been finalized a couple of years ago, the shows would have been out a couple years ago. Like Son of the Beach, or Adam-12.

In fact, one of the guys in charge of shows at Shout has been asked frequently about Facts of Life, and his answer as late as last year was "We're interested, but Sony isn't willing to let us license it yet".

If you want to play chicken little and proclaim the sky is falling, good for you. But here in reality, at this time, things look best for a company like Shout, or Mill Creek, or Timeless to come along and license shows to complete them on DVD, because they can make a profit off of, and are willing to accept lesser sales than Sony or Universal or Fox.

NEWSFLASH: THE SKY HAS ALREADY FALLEN! You go on dreaming that a company like Shout will waste their time & money & distribute the rest of SONY owned titles that did poor in sales when the rest of "the real world" has no extra money to buy these DVD's when everyone else is worrying about eating & paying their rent! And when it makes more economical sense for these shows to be downloaded or recorded off TV!
WAKE THE #### UP! We are living in 2010 Post Bush era where thousands of companies have gone under with more to come and no one at any corporate company is planning to take on a losing battle. I don't care how much less of a profit they are willing to make, it's just not economical at this time!
Do I wish for the remaining seasons to be released? Sure, but things are just not looking good at this time & if you want to really live in TV Land in your head, then you go right ahead! Knock yourself out trying to convince yourself that Shout or any other no thrills company is going to release any more Sony titles. Not now anyway!

...you do realize that Shout makes all it's money off of releasing shows the other studios have abandoned, or just refused to release in the first place because the larger studios didn't think they would make any money off of them in the first place, right?

If it wasn't economical to pick up shows abandoned by other companies, we wouldn't be seeing Leave it to Beaver or The Facts of Life later this year, or Adam 12 next week, or shows like Ironside and the Bill Cosby Show released direct through Shout's website.

But, I don't think you're going to listen to reason, so I'm typing for nothing. This thread was sensationalistic, chicken little bull$#!+ from the beginning, so why should I expect anything different? Facts? Who needs those pesky things?

SHOUT! Factory or M.P.I. could very well make a profit. Sony doesn't seem to have any marketing strategy, and just doesn't seem to care. Maybe there more focused in other divisions.

Wow your posts are so funny I actually laughed. For starters, for someone throwing around all these so called facts, you couldn't even title your posts with proper grammar. You totally ignore the obvious and twist the facts around to suit your own feeble argument. Shout! HAS licensed Facts Of Life very recently and probably other titles as well that have not been announced.

Secondly, your "facts" are totally wrong. You make a general statement that NOBODY is buying DVDs or CDs anymore. WRONG! If that's true than why do studios keep producing them? I must be hallucianting on checkout lines when I see people buying DVDs and CDs at Best Buy and other stores.

I'm not wasting my time by arguing with you because you are the only one on this thread not living in "the real world" since you fail to see reality. I'm just having an amusing time pointing out the absurdity of your posts.

OK...lets try and get this thread back on a more respectable track instead of it dissolving into name calling and fighting. There are no facts at this time (aside from the layoff), just theories about releasing strategies. Many of us already have these shows on some format (VHS or DVD) and would welcome any type of upgrade especially if the episodes are complete.

So it is entirely possible that any abandoned show would be picked up by a third party for distribution as this continues to happen with many shows.

It is also entirely possible that Sony goes the route of MOD (something they are looking into if you read one of my previous posts in this thread) and they dump the remaining three seasons of AITF, the remaining seasons of Archie Bunker's Place, the Jeffersons etc. into a manufacture on demand format. It has worked well with Warner Bros. and I know them and Universal are going the route with exclusive releases through other websites (TCM and Amazon for example). While I'm only interested in the AITF and ABP series, collectors of the other shows should have the opportunity to copmlete those series as well.

It's also possible that maybe Sony releases a complete series collection to retail outlets which encompasses the 6 seasons already released plus the remainder of the seasons....and we all know how Sony loves to re-release stuff. :)

So..please be patient and take what you can get for now even if that is episodes off of television.

I think where Sony made a mistake is not taking the time to include extras with their season DVD releases. One of the big selling points of TV series on DVDs is behind-the-scenes interviews, clips, etc. They never did that. They didn't really seem to put the time and care into the releases and a lot of people felt they were getting gyped on the price.

McGillicuddy

......and then they turn around and put out that big Norman Lear set re-releasing the first seasons of All in the Family and 6 of his other shows and put the extras there, retail it for over $150.00, and then wonder why their releases don't sell. Those extras should have been on the 1st season sets in the first place, and they should be putting that creative time and effort into subsequent releases of Maude and One Day at a Time, and finishing off All in the Family and The Jeffersons!

And, to further discredit the Chicken Little "The Sky Is Falling!!1!" tone of the original post, Shout Factory announces today that another long-stalled Sony show, Mad About You, is getting a season 4 release in June.

Now, there's a big similarity between Mad About You, Facts of Life, and the Lear shows like AITF... All of 'em were abandoned by Sony in 2007.

This new announcement really makes me wonder if the Lear shows will be coming up soon from Shout, since it seems that Shout has just recently gotten the keys to the Sony vault.

And did you see how they screwed up I Dream Of Jeannie Season 3 and when hundreds of fans complained to them, they did nothing! There are 3 huge mistakes that are unacceptable on that DVD set.
1.) In Episode #2: "Jeannie or the Tiger"-A huge green color appears in one scene of an episode distracting the viewer.
2.) In Episode #10: "Here Comes Bootsie Nightingale"-There is a whole scene that starts to shake up & down & the audio is not in synch.
3.) Episode #13: "My Son the Genie" This episode is listed as being on disk 3 when it really appears as the last episode on disk 2.

No wonder they laid off 450 employees. That explains the crappy effort they put into the IDOJ Season 3 DVD set and all the other Sony DVD's.
