Movie Reviews: When In Rome

"Don't go there -- by any road -- most critics advise in their reviews of When in Rome.

Rick Groen in the Toronto Globe and Mail offers this recommendation: "In the case of When in Rome ... do what the Romans used to do: Toss the bloody thing to the lions."

The New York Post's Lou Lumenick figures that even at this early date it's already a candidate for worst movie of the year. It "plumbs new depths for ineptitude in acting, directing, writing and every other department," he writes.

"Regardless of where its stars want to take it, all roads here lead to blandness and inanity," says Joe Neumaier in the New York Daily News.

Carrie Rickey in the Philadelphia Inquirer dismisses it as a "rom-bomb" and Janice Page in the Boston Globe, as a "predictable mess."

New York Times critic A.O. Scott reserves his most trenchant comments about When in Rome for a couple of parenthetical phrases.

After first calling the romantic comedy "frantic and dispiriting," he notes: "(And by the way, 'frantic and dispiriting' is pretty high praise for a romantic comedy in these lovelorn times.)"

Then, after commenting that the movie relies on "sentimental conceit," he comments: "(If there is a movie genre in more trouble at the moment than the comic romance, it's surely the live-action family comedy, but don't get me started.)"

I have such a big crush on Kristen Bell. I really wish she would do better movies.
