PUNXSUTAWNEY, Pa. – An animal rights group wants organizers of Pennsylvania's Groundhog Day festival to replace Punxsutawney Phil with a robotic stand-in.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals says it's unfair to keep the animal in captivity and subject him to the huge crowds and bright lights that accompany tens of thousands of revelers each Feb. 2 in Punxsutawney, a tiny borough about 65 miles northeast of Pittsburgh. PETA is suggesting the use of an animatronic model.

But William Deeley, president of the Inner Circle of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, says the animal is "being treated better than the average child in Pennsylvania." The groundhog is kept in a climate-controlled environment and is inspected annually by the state Department of Agriculture.

Deeley says PETA isn't interested in Phil from Feb. 2 on, and is looking for publicity

I agree with Mr. Deeley. This is nothing more than a grab for attention by PETA. My advice to PETA? Go suck a sea kitten!

I wish PETA would disappear into a Black Hole and never return.

PETA recently gave some kind of award to James Cameron for the wonderful way he portrayed fake sci fi animals on a made up planet in his movie Avatar.

I'm not making this up.

PETA(People of the Eating of Tasty Animals) :)

If PETA wants to do something important, make people stop dressing up their animals in costumes.

 You and my sister would get along great because she can't stand to see animals dressed up like people. That's one of her major pet peeves (no pun intended). A lot of times, you'll notice that Jay Leno mentions how much he hates dressing up pets on Headlines. "Your dog is not going to wear these stupid shoes!"

PETA needs a life!

Paul McCartney who supports PETA, understands that not everyone's going to be a vegetarian or vegan.

A robotic groundhog? Seriously? How can it tell that it can see its own shadow? I laughed when I first saw this article.

PETA really has no credibility.

It's stuff like this that puts people like me, who would theoretically be in support of PETA, totally off of them.

Silly, pointless and wrongheaded. Put the money they spent on this lunacy toward saving animals in shelters!

I dont hate PETA because they go around holding up signs or wearing shirts that saying "Meat Is Murder" , but what really gets to me is when they throw red paint on fur.

PETA definitely spends way too much of it's time, money, and resources on publicity stunts and not nearly enough on actually taking care of animals.

When will PETA realize that their outlandish stunts and proposals will get them nowhere?

It's amazing how these people can throw paint at people wearing fur and basically get off scot-free- if I did that, I'd be hauled into court in a heartbeat.

They walk a fine line between good and ridiculousness.

It's one thing to go after Michael Vick for his dogfighting- it's another to do this.

Oh boy, now I've heard everything! If there's one thing that Punxatawney is proud of, it's their groundhog. No way would they mistreat it! The only time I noticed any "abuse" toward it was in 2005 when the Steelers were playing the Seahawks in the Superbowl the following week. In the paper they showed a picture of the Groundhog Day proclamation and some of the Steelers fans had turned it into a Steelers rally. They even put a Steelers "terrible towel" over the groundhog (on his back). I guess he's a Steelers fan,but that couldn't have been comfortable. For all I know he could have wanted the Seahawks to win! You guys are SO right about PETA. Makes me wonder (but I'm not surprised) that this is being brought up four days before Groundhog Day as opposed to say, last summer. I'm sure it is for the publicity. Punxatawney has a groundhog zoo and they practically worship the creatures. I mean, if it weren't for groundhogs (and Bill Murrary!), most people would have no idea about Punxatawney. I've wanted to go there ever since I saw that movie back in 1992. I'm vowing to go next year.

Besides, who would hurt something as adorable as this?

This is the stupidist thing I've ever heard. And we Pennsylvanians don't have much to be proud of, but we do love our groundhog! They're just jealous cuz they don't have anything as cute as Phil!

Here in Canada we have our own groundhog. His name is Wiarton Willie and he lives in Wiarton, Ontario. And we would never let PETA tell us to replace him with an android rodent!!!!

Punxatawney Phil, groundhog. A rodent barely alive. Gentleman we can rebuild him. We have the technology. We can build the world's first bionic groundhog. Punxatawney Phil will be that groundhog. Better than he was before. Better...Faster...Stronger
