Shout is picking up all of the old TV shows that didn't sell well enough for their companies.

And that's a good thing.

And, if FoL season 4 doesn't do well enough for Shout in retail stores, odds are they will just sell it as an online exclusive! Shout just started doing that, releasing exclusively through their website new seasons of Mr. Belvedere, Ironside, Room 222, My Three Dads, and other shows that must not have done too well in regular stores.

So hopefully, FoL will be seen through to the end with Shout, one way or the other.

That's how I felt when Sony announced they were releasing Season 2 of Barney Miller in 2008 - 4 years after the release of Season 1!! FOL fans only had to wait 3 1/2 years between releases of Seasons 3 & 4. Gotta love Sony.  Thank goodness Shout stepped up to the plate!!

Wow! I swear, I have the strangest luck when it comes to buying TV DVDs sometimes. I just bought the 3rd season of the Facts of Life last week. Back in 2006, I bought the first season of Mork and Mindy and a few weeks later they announced they were finally releasing Season 2 the following Spring. And in 2007, I bought a few seasons of Cheers and a few weeks later they announced they were going to release Season 9 after a long wait. I guess good things really do come to those who wait. ;) What show should I buy next?

I hear ya!!! Sony's so full of it! Maybe Shout will start releasing some of the later seasons of The Jeffersons too, now that they're planning on releasing season four of FOL as well as other seasons of other shows that supposedly "didn't do well" with Sony and other companies. I think that season three of Facts did just fine. I think sales were almost as good as they were for seasons one and two. I think Sony was just a pain the backside (as usual!) But the important thing is at least SOMEBODY stepped up to the plate and started delivering, thank heaven!!!

Guess Sony Pictures DVD studio is in trouble economically. But if Shout's picking up the next season, then maybe it'll pick up S5 soon. Season 5. The first FOL season that I watched the first-run eps. that were originally broadcasted on NBC back in 1983.

This is just great! Finally after 3 1/2 years they release the fourth season of the Facts of Life. I hope Shout will release them faster. I hate Sony for going so slow. But it's strange that Season 3 was released only 5 months after Seasons 1 and 2, and then they just abandoned it. Anyway, I hope that Shout will also pick up All In the Family, Maude, The Jeffersons, Diff'rent Strokes, Who's the Boss?, and 227. I just hope that Shout keeps the cases looking the same as Sony did.

Shout more or less stick to slim cases with a card casing, so yes that should stay exactly the same.

I don't think you have any worries regarding the cases, Shout usually issues their DVD sets in Double Slimline Cases surrounded by a cardboard sleeve, exactly the way Sony did (at least when they released Facts)....and for those interested the only difference so far with Shouts Online Only exclusive website for abandoned series (Facts is not part of this at this point) is they drop the cardboard outer sleeve and use the current CBS/Paramount type of standard amaray multi disc holder, which makes it the same size as a single movie release. Hope all that makes sense.

I am doing THE happy dance right now. This was great news to hear about this morning. Shout! is easily my favorite studio anyway, and now they're picking up one of my favorite shows.

Also: Shout Factory-produced sets tend to have some of the highest production values amongst DVD sets so you can probably bank on something in the way of bonus features, plus aesthetics like well-done menus, superb video quality, etc.

This is fantastic news, especially because just before Xmas a rep from Shout! posted online that while they would love to have Facts, Sony "wasn't interested at this time."

Perhaps the recesssion is a good thing in small ways like this, where big companies are forced to outsource their product.

It's almost a given now that Season 5 will see the light. It's my second favorite after Season 3. The one-hour season-opener where Blair and Jo start college is terrific, and Edna's Edibles gave them some wonderful and fresh storylines that year.

Now, hopefully Shout! will also pick up other abandoned Sony product like Maude, One Day at a Time, Hazel and more! They are already permanently in my good graces for bringing us Rhoda, Designing Women, and Patty Duke last year.

This is indeed extremely exciting news for two reasons.....first Shout still sells retail in stores, but now we even have a second shout source incase sales aren't good since they announced their online only website for abandoned series.....translation......lets speculate....."Facts of Life" gets to season 6 and sales start to fall off, then we have another chance it will continue on their exclusive website......SHOUT OUT TO SHOUT!!........or sing The Isley Brothers (I believe) famous song "SHOUT!"....if you don't know it, look for it on the net...The Beatles did a great cover of the song!

It would be awesome if Shout! releases season 5 as fast as Sony did season 3. Now that Shout! is releasing season 4, hopefully we will have uncut sets that include the "previously on..." and "next on..." snippets that Sony left out in the two parter episodes. Hopefully they'll clear the music for episodes such as "Crusin'" and a few other later seasons episodes I can think of, if they decide to release the rest of the series.

I'm glad Shout has the Exclusives Store online but I think this show is going to go all the way. This is the biggest tv-on-dvd news in a long time and it's received a lot of attention since yesterday's news post. It has a lot of fans. Shout has a winner on their hands. This is so awesome! Finally after all of these years, my favorite tv-movie The Facts of Life Goes To Paris, I loved it when I saw this originally when it aired. Thank you Shout! I will buy this as soon as it is release, I wonder if it's up for pre-order at Amazon?

This may be far off, but when all 9 seasons are released on DVD, and Shout Factory does a complete series set, maybe the edited episodes on the individual 1&2 Season sets will be unedited.

So excited!! Thanks Shout!! I don't understand why Sony dropped the ball on season four. It only made sense to release that season, as it's the last season in the original format. Even if they never put out another season, the fourth would seem to be a natural place to wrap it up

But BooHiss to Sony, and applause to Shout for this show and

Not a lot more I think the previous seasons were selling for $29.95. You have to remember that Shout Factory has to buy the license to make the dvd's. And knowing Sony they probably charge a lot. So $10.04 more is not unreasonable. I am still buying the dvds.

Actually,

We all should praise that Sony sold the right's for the Home Video Distribution to Shout! They could have kept saying no and not releasing the series all together or well, like Barney Miller release a set every 4 years.

I'm without a doubt that Season 5 will be released this fall.

I also guess that the full series will be released on DVD by Shout! either exclusively or in stores.

Thank you Sony!!!

Couldn't agree more. People are also griping about the price. It's not that much more. Shout needs to recoup their licensing fees, right? I think we should all be very grateful this is being continued in a market where too many shows have been abandoned.

It's already selling really well in pre-orders on amazon. I'd be surprised if Shout didn't release 1 or 2 more seasons before the end of the year.

THANK YOU SHOUT!

I am glad they sticked with the similar format although -- they have used season 5 pictures for Kim, Mindy, and Nancy. Mrs. Garrett's and Blairs are the only one's correct. And Mrs. G's hair is a mess. lol.

Blairs dyed job in season 4 was always so fried looking -- maybe the style made it that way -- more natural in seasons 6-9.

Also, Pamela Segall/Adlon ('Kelly' in Season 5) would be interesting (to me)... especially because she ended up in the opening credits during Season 5 (and why exactly would be worth hearing from her)... :)

Obviously, they thought Kelly was a good idea at the time--for Jo have to someone to mentor and of course, a younger kid to bring in the vibe that was lost as the girls got older. But after a few episodes, they saw that Kelly was not working out as a character and she just did a Chuck Cunningham. The producers would try again next season with Andy Moffat and he ended up clicking--not to mention be the first male regular since Mr. Bradley.

I can't tell you how disappointed I am that Shout Factory brought the rights to Facts of Life, I was hoping and praying for any company except Shout Factory to buy the rights from Sony but my worst fears have came true :( Do not get me wrong, I am happy for you all that Facts of Life Season 4 is finally released after waiting for years but the problem is that I am deaf and Shout Factory never puts closed captioning or English subtitles on any of their DVDs releases which kept me from buying my favorite TV shows like Mr. Belvedere due to lack of closed captioning/english subtitles. I think the character Kelly was wasted on the show during Season 5, and had far more potential than the writers gave her credit for (and Pamela Segall/Adlon being seriously cute/funny is definitely a bonus), but it would be interesting (to me) to hear from Pamela herself about her experiences on the show...

I keep hearing this same compaint from people. I am not completely deaf, but have some serious hearing loss as well and always have the captions on my TV so I can read, more than listen to the shows. The only Shout Factory DVD I have is Rhoda Season 1, but my captions work on that show perfectly. I know there are no subtitles on the DVDs, but are you sure the CC doesn't work? I am just curious as to why I would have captions for Rhoda and none of their other sets would?

I'm actually suprised to see Shout! picked up the rights, great news for us that already have the first 3 seasons. I remember coming home from school in the late 1980's and watching weekday afternoon reruns of 'The Facts Of Life' on CBC, around 4 p.m. AST. If it's available on Amazon.ca (Shout's releases usually are available in Canada), I'll definitely be getting it as an early birthday present.

On the few occasions where they accidentally used syndicated eps (Rhoda s1, Father Knows Best s1, Mr Ed s1), they billed the boxes as "The fourth season", instead of "The complete fourth season". So no.. they tend to use complete ones. They used complete eps for all seasons of That Girl and Designing Women so far, and Punky Brewster as well. Surely more shows as well but those come to mind.

^ They did it recently with Simon and Simon Season 4, a couple of episodes were syndicated.

Tis why I'm not looking forward to them releasing the rest of my favorite show: Boy Meets World

Syndicated version means 22 minute episodes instead of the 24-25 minute ones originally seen.

Shout knows how fans feel about having uncut episodes. They tend to use syndicated episodes as a last resort. Simon & Simon is owned by Universal just like Kate & Allie. When VEI released Seasons 1 & 2 of K&A, they also used a handful of syndicated episodes because the masters of those were not in good shape for a dvd release, as stated in a news post on tvshowsondvd.com. I feel confident that Facts will be complete and uncut.

I guess you could call around and ask. I haven't preordered. I was hoping they would have it at Best Buy because they have a whole section of Shout Factory releases. If I can't find it there I will buy it online, but I will not be happy to have to wait for it.

I checked with my local stores (one of which is Best Buy) and they don't have any indication they will be stocking it. In their system, it would say "Coming Soon" if they were going to stock it. Instead, it says "Not Available".

Yeah, they must have started cutting down on what they will stock. It's a shame. I used to go there for all of my "new release" dvds. But I remember when Father Knows Best - Season 4 just came out, they weren't stocking it. And they stocked the previous 3 seasons. They were always very good about having Shout titles in stock. Now, online is the only way to go.

I don't really mind waiting either Jude and you're right it is a deal with free shipping. I just didn't know it would not be available in stores or I would have preordered it before now. I just don't want to have to wait a long time to watch it because I've been looking forward to it.

Facts of Life goes to Paris is 96 minutes long and not seperated into 4 shorter episodes! Every single episode is about 25 minutes long, meaning unedited =)
The two-part episodes have their tag scenes intact. "Graduation" is presented in its original 48 minute version.

How did you get it so fast? Amazon hasn't even shipped copies out yet. I wish they would start shipping out the Friday before the release date to ensure arrival on the day of release. That should be guaranteed if you pre-order. Otherwise, what's the sense in pre-ordering?

I actually thought this one would be an easy find, BUT NOOOO...Best Buy isn't even stocking it, it is an online only and FYE only ordered enough for the pre-orders.....so I had to buy it off amazon today.....I told the guy at best buy, "keep sending people to the internet and you'll be out of business soon too, like circuit city, virgin mega, Tower, saturday matinee, Sam Goody, etc". What these stores don't realize is that browsing leads to impulse buys or discovering something in the aisles you didn't even know was released, which doesn't happen over the internet.

I never even thought about looking for FoL S4 in stores. It's a season of a show deep into the run, and the show is from before 2005. Most of the time, the box stores don't carry old shows anymore.

Plus, I wanted an uncensored cover version of Penn and Teller's B.S. Season 7, so I just went with Amazon.

Over at the Shout boards, one of the fine young men bringing us so much classic TV on DVD recommended ordering FoL from the website of one of the major stores (Target, Wal-Mart, Best Buy) to show them there's interest in classic TV so that maybe they will actually carry the shows in the stores.

Anyway, got my copy today, but I still have saeasons 2 and 3 to go through before watching it. I'm glad to see everything is unedited, and Shout pulled off another great release.

Sure, sometimes you have to watch out for the first season of shows they release, but once they get rolling with a series, everything usually turns out great.

Now, on to season 5! I hope this sold well enough for further wide releases, but I could even live with sligtly more expensive "Shout Select" exclusive releases just to finally get the complete series.

Got my copy yesterday to help future releases and watched the Paris movie last night. It really is an entertaining movie to watch. It's nice to see the characters out of their choreographed situations on the set. I love it when they head out into the world. I def have a new appreciation for Mrs. G, she does some great physical comedy.

Looking forward to the next seasons - there are still tons of incredible episodes to come! I hope they get released.

Hopefully, they are already planning a release of Season 5. From what I've seen for sales rank online, this has been a very successful release for them. DVDempire sold out of their stock and was expecting another order. Amazon's sales rank is at #150 which isn't that bad at all for a classic tv-on-dvd release. It would be great to start Edna's Edibles by the end of 2010. :happyface

This cheaper packaging is probably saving them money. It seems to be the new standard in DVD releases lately. CBS/Paramount does it this way too. As long as Shout Factory releases S5-9,I'll take whatever packaging they put it in.
BTW,I put more photos up(including the DVD menus) at the FOL Facebook page.....

On Tues. it was #80 on Amazon.com and #27 (!) on Amazon.ca, so I think Season 5 will be coming before year end too.

I hope so, next to Season 3, I think it was the best of the series, Eastland or not. So many great episodes: the hour-long Season Premiere, the chain-letter episode, the one with the latch-key kid and Jean Smart as his mother, the one where Pamela Segall threatens to smash their windows....

I haven't seen many of these since the NBC weekday morning reruns in the '80s.

Back then, I thought the quality of the stories dipped a little in Season 4, but I am enjoying every minute of the DVDs so far.

I'm also having a hard time finding the set in stores. So far I went to four stores in the Boston area. I went to FYI and Borders near Downtown Crossing - no, they didn't have it. Then I went to Best Buy and Target in my neighborhood, both didn't have it. What is with Boston and new releases? (Same thing with Madonna's Blu-ray concert a few weeks ago.) I might get FOL Season 4 on Amazon.

If there are any of you still planning to order this set online, I DO NOT recommend Best Buy. I ordered this set online last week, and when my package arrived on Saturday I opened up and to my surprise was a movie that should have been shipped to someone in another state. This is not the first time that Best Buy has screwed up on my online order. So beware when ordering from Best Buy.com. Best Buy re-ordered this set for me, and it should be in my hands later this week....if it gets handled correctly.

So after reading through the last few pages of this thread, I see that I wasn't the only one who had trouble finding the set in stores. It wasn't at my local Target or Best Buy and I ended up having to order it on the Target website, which I really didn't want to do because I didn't want to have to wait for it to show up. Thankfully my copy showed up on Monday and I've already watched the first disc (minus the Paris movie, which I'm going to watch later on). I have a strong feeling that Shout! will keep releasing the series, but as part of the Shout! Select program (which means available only through Shout!'s website)--they have done this for with Mr. Belvedere s4, Room 222 s2 and now Simon and Simon s5.
