Does anyone out there remember any of these prime-time cartoon series that were gone in about an eye-blink? None lasted more than a season, and some
were gone after only a few episodes. Actually, there are some shows on
this list that were somewhat entertaining (but not many). I did enjoy Calvin and the Colonel (only seen one episode), Capitol Critters, Dilbert, Family Dog, Fish Police, and Jokebook. But the rest are (I think)
pretty forgettable.

In the '60s, everyone was trying to duplicate the success of The Flintstones; and, in the '90s, The Simpsons inspired another
animation boom. I notice one big difference, though. In the '60s, the
cartoon shows that flopped in prime-time (e.g., The Alvin Show, Top
Cat, The Bullwinkle Show, The Jetsons, The Bugs Bunny Show, Jonny Quest) were shifted to Saturday mornings. But, in the '90s, the shows that
flopped in prime-time, for the most part, just disappeared off the radar
entirely.

Dilbert - I remember catching a few eps. as this aired but I didn't get into it.

Father of the Pride - I don't think I saw any of it but I know of it due to its failure status.

God, the Devil, and Bob - Another one that I did not see but I remember the huge controversry that this caused at the time and that it only aired for four eps.

The PJs - Of the list this is the one that I watched the most as it aired.

One thing that stands out to me was on their promos when they spoofed Titanic with the guy crashing down the street in the wagon for the "King of the World" scene.

I remember watching Fish Police.

I should have thought of that one, because I read the comic strip every day.

...."MATTY'S FUNDAY FUNNIES" [ABC], which was originally seen on late Sunday afternoons from 1959 through '61, which added a prime-time edition in the fall of 1960. Mattel sponsored it (with their mascots "Matty Mattel" and "Sisterbelle" as 'hosts'), and it was the original showcase for "Harveytoons", the 1950-'59 theatrical Paramount cartoons acquired by Harvey Publications [they publlished the comic book adventures of Famous Studios' Casper the Friendly Ghost, Little Audrey, Herman & Katnip, et.al., beginning in 1950, buying the rights to those characters and the post-'50 Paramount cartoon library in '59]. After that series ended in December 1961, the "Harveytoons" went into syndication as "CASPER AND COMPANY". The Paramount studio eventually produced a new series of Casper TV cartoons for Harvey's "NEW CASPER CARTOON SHOW" [ABC] in 1963, with an additional three years of Paramount's theatrical cartoons, through 1962- more "Harveytoons"- rounding out the show.

...and replacing "MATTY'S FUNDAY FUNNIES" on ABC's early Saturday night schedule in January 1962, was Bob Clampett's animated version of "Beany and Cecil" (as "MATTY'S FUNNIES WITH BEANY AND CECIL" during its first six months, then Mattel dropped their sponsorship), adapted from his syndicated (1949-'54) puppet show, "TIME FOR BEANY". After the series left prime-time in the fall of 1962, repeats appeared on ABC's Saturday and Sunday morning schedules through 1965, then into syndication.

...but "WISHKID", "DINK THE LITTLE DINOSAUR" and M.C. Hammer's cartoon show "HAMMERMAN" were on Saturday mornings, not prime-time. It's good to remember them, but they were only seen at night if you watched them on your VCR after taping them during the day. Nice to know some episodes are in your own collection, and you can see them anytime you want!
