Peter-Hello?
Carol-Hi, Peter!
Peter-Hi, mom. How are you doing?
Carol-I’m fine. How are you doing? It must be lonely over there.
Peter-Yeah, it is. I hate being divorced!
Carol-Well, you’ll just have to live through it.
Peter-Yeah...How’s Marcia?
Carol-She’s getting better.
Peter-I didn’t even know she was feeling down like that.
Carol-None of us did.
Peter-A lot of things are changing.
Carol-You’re right. I don’t like them.
Peter-Neither do I...So, why’d you call?
Carol-Just wanted to talk to you. I’m feeling lonely too.
Peter-Yeah...with dad gone, nothing has seemed right.
Carol-Well...there is something wrong.
Peter-What is it, mom?
Carol-Well...Alice had a heart attack and is in the hospital. I just thought I should call everyone.
Peter-I understand.
Carol-Well, hopefully, I’ll get the whole gang over to her room Thursday to visit her...like we did with Marcia. That really lit up her day.
Peter-I could tell...Well, I have to go to the market...I’m running low on food.
Carol-Okay, bye honey.
Peter-Bye, mom.
[They both hang up the phone]
scene-Janet’s House
Janet, also known as Jan, is tidying up her kitchen. The phone rings]
Jan-Hello? Hi mom...Alice, she’s in the hospital...I’ll be RIGHT over! Oh...Okay, Thursday? I’ll be there.

Peter-Okay...Well, bye.
Carol-Bye.
[Carol hangs up the phone. The phone rings]
Carol-Peter!
Dr.J-I’m not Peter...I’m Dr. Johanson.
Carol-Oh...I’m so sorry. How’s Alice?
Dr.J-Well, I’ve got bad news.
Carol-Oh no...
Dr.J-I hate to say it, but...
Carol-What...no I don’t want to know...but I guess I have to know.
Dr.J-Well...Alice is...dieing.
[Carol gasps. Then, tears start rolling down her cheeks]
Dr.J-I’m sorry...
Carol[still crying]-No...that’s okay. No apology needed. It had...to happen some time.
Dr.J-Well, it hasn’t happened yet.
Carol-Thank god...How long do you think she has left?
Dr.J-A week...a month...a year...It could happen anytime.
Carol-Well, I was planning on gathering the family up to visit her on Thursday.
Dr.J-That’s fine...I just advise that you don’t tell them while they’re there.
Carol-Of course not...I don’t even know if I could tell them...I don’t even think I could handle losing another important person in my life.
Dr.J-I know how you feel...My mother recently died.
Carol-I’m so sorry...
Dr.J-Now you’re apologizing to me.
Carol-I’m sorry...
Dr.J-Don’t be sorry...just make the best out of the time you have with her.
Carol-Right...thank you doctor.
Dr.J-No problem...Bye,now.
