I remember reading somewhere that the last thing Jack said to one of the other "Barney Miller" cast members, in real life, was: "Enjoy your time", and shortly afterwards, passed away of cancer.
Did this really happen? If so, what cast member did he give this advice to?
Thanks!
Cheers!

Steve Landesberg (Dietrich; as quoted in Rick Mitz's book The Great TV Sitcom Book):
"Jack was always making jokes, no self-pity. One of the last things he said to me was, 'Enjoy your time'."
Hope that helps!!

He was always joking, too- even towards the end.
According to imdb.com: His last words to Hal Linden as he was being wheeled into the operating room before his death were "It must have been the coffee." This was a reference to the running gag of his character Nick Yemana having the reputation for making horrible coffee.

I also loved Jack's appearance on Family Feud with Hal, Steve, Ron Glass and Ron Carey. I think that's one of the last things he did before he died, but he was so funny and sweet on that appearance! You could tell they were all having a great time. For those who do not have the All-Star Family Feud box set, Barney Miller vs. Eight is Enough is on YouTube.

Thanks for the info, everybody!
Jack seemed like a nice person, in addition to being a good actor!
He was very humble, and witty, even when he knew he was dying of cancer. Not too many people have that attitude, especially when they are terminally ill.
Sincerely, Steve B. :)
