About a month or so ago I entered a contest for a Nintendo Wii sponsored by the Ford dealership in my hometown. The rules were basic, No purchase necessary, One entry per-person, 18 years or older, etc... Entry forms were available in the local paper in both the print and online editions. I submitted my entry using the online form and didn't give it much thought because I never have any luck when it comes to drawings.
I knew the drawing was today but wasn't expecting to win. At 1:30 this afternoon I got a call and the caller I.D. showed that it was the Ford dealership so my first obvious thought was that I had won. I answered and this man said is this Mr. Hunt? and I said yes. He said, You recently entered our contest for a Nintendo Wii, I said that's right. He said, Well I'm sorry to tell you that you didn't win but can we put you in a new or used car today?
I was literally flabbergasted! I asked him how many entrants there were? and he said several hundred. I said do you mean to tell me that you're going to call all those that didn't win and try to get them to buy a new or used car? Don't you think that all those that entered like I did are going to think they've also won once they see your name on their caller I.D.'s?
I can understand the dealership wanting to sell cars but I thought this was an extremely poor way to go about doing it. I'm ok with the fact that I didn't win the Nintendo Wii but why bother calling me just to tell me I didn't win? I told him that I could use another car but that I sure as hell wouldn't be doing any business with their company.
