Movie Reviews: The Spy Next Door

The Spy Next Door is a kids comedy starring Jackie Chan. What more is there to write about?

That's the dilemma critics face in reviewing this film.

Many of them end up reviewing the outtakes that are generally featured at the end of Jackie Chan flicks.

Roger Ebert in the Chicago Sun-Times notes that years ago, you watched the outtakes to see him fouling up one of the precarious stunts he would perform for the film.

Now, since Chan is 55, "the outtakes involve his use of the English language."

Writes A.O. Scott in the New York Times: "The outtakes are not all that great but still better than anything else in the movie."

Claudia Puig in USA Today comments that if the filmmakers had only added a few more outtakes, and you'd "have a better movie than the silly one that came before."

But Kyle Smith in the New York Post remarks, "Even the 'can you believe I flubbed a line? reel over the closing credits isn't funny."

Some critics do actually comment on the movie itself, with predictable distaste. "Classic January junk," Elizabeth Weitzman calls it in the New York Daily News.
