NBC is planning a new series of The Rockford Files, based on the '70s P.I. show starring James Garner. This won't be just your average remake though. David Shore, creator of TV's House, is developing the new Rockford.

"It's just that great character and there isn't that PI character on television right now," said NBC and Universal Media Studios president of primetime entertainment Angela Bromstad at the Television Critics Association winter press tour. "So if we do a creative reinvention of that, with that title, and I don't think there's anyone better to do it than David Shore who creates such a great character in House."

TV remakes have fared poorly, including NBC's own Bionic Woman and Knight Rider. Bromstad is aware of the pitfalls. "I know, that's why have to make it work," she said. "I will tell you the script was just one of the best Christmas presents I've had in a long time."

They aren't thinking drastic changes to the Jim Rockford character. "It's his persona. It's his persona. It's contemporary and feels very contemporary but has all the hallmarks of the original series."

That just means she has to find the new James Garner. "Jim Rockford, which is going to be the biggest challenge."

Garner himself might not be happy to see his baby redone, but it's all in NBC's hands now. "It's a title we own and something that we absolutely cleared."

Exactly - you think NBC would've learned after the failed remakes of Bionic Woman, Knight Rider, etc. Then again, this IS NBC we're talking about.

So NBC says they own the title...big deal. James Garner is the heart and soul of that show. They've butchered more classic shows than anyone. Maybe if they tried to create something original, they wouldn't be in this much trouble.

You know when someone has run out of ideas, when they have to remake the classics
