In the Sitcoms Online photo galleries, I keep encountering this photo of Mary Tyler Moore:

In this photo, her legs are green like those of a frog and it looks like one of those rare occasions where her bare midriff is seen. I hope she's wearing green pantyhose. This is an unusual photo anyway, so this cannot easily be explained.

And look at this record label from a Miguelito Valdez album:

She is dressed in some Carmen Miranda-like outfit (only without the fruit hat). There is another record label with Moore wearing that same outfit.

And I thought Mary's nightgown looked unusual.

Well, thankfully her wardrobe was a lot better on TMTMS!! Of course, TDVDS was b&w, so we didn't get to see any garish colors she might have been wearing.

Actually I think I can explain that picture quite easily. You see, before she was an actress Mary Tyler Moore was a dancer. And the outfit she is wearing in that picture is typical dancers attire of the late 50's/early 60's.

To me the outfits you point out aren't unusual in themselves at all, they're just not what we're used to seeing Mary in on The Dick Van Dyke Show (stylish housewife, world famous capri pants), or The Mary Tyler Moore Show (working woman on a budget who still had great outfits).

The color of her tights is not exactly the first thing I'm thinking of when I see that pic of her in dancer's attire, it's her curves. And I agree the Carmen Miranda-type outfit is wild, but it's perfect for a Latin rhythms album. Mary did lots of advertisements showing off her great legs, and I think she looks fantastic. I also wouldn't use the word "unusual" to describe Mary's nightie...more like "stunning", but it was very colorful.

Is it the colors that really interest/concern you, James?

Plus, let us not forget that Mary began her TV career as the Happy Hotpoint Elf (in the commercials during the Ozzie & Harriet Show).

Thanks Catlover!
I'd always heard about those ads, but I'd never seen them.

No problem!! Those were the only pics I could find of her as the Happy Hotpoint Elf. I did read that she stopped doing those ads when she got very visibly pregnant with her son.

On a website called yourememberthat.com you can view a commercial featuring Mary as Happy Hotpoint.

That's adorable when Happy Hotpoint is trying to get the dot of the "i" to stay on "Hotpoint"!
One can tell Mary has dance experience, too, and she's so cute in that suit!
Thanks for posting!

You're right about the colors, Monika. In those days when they filmed in black and white they used various colors to represent different shades of gray and black. It doesn't make sense in color, but they might have used green tights to makes her legs look more "tan" in black and white.

...Mary posed for various "bargain label" record album covers during 1958-'59 (another one, for "Gigi" [Tops records], has her eagerly sipping a glass of champagne extended to her by an unseen male arm). Her "Spanish Senorita" pose for the "Miguelito Valdez" [Sutton] album is similar to a character she appeared as {no dialogue} in an April 1959 "STEVE CANYON" episode, "Operation Strike Force" (a publicity photo of her appearance in that episode is featured in the 1966 TV reference book- regretfully out of print- "How Sweet It Was").

It's not the colours, it was the first photo in this thread I am interested/concerned with. Red shirt, bare midriff, dark green "knickers", frog legs, and a pair of two-inch high heels, what was she doing/promoting in that photo?

Also...who is James?

I've seen that photo of Mary in tights lots of times and someone changed the bottom half to green in this photo. The true color is red with a white midriff. Mary had some weird outfits of her own in photos from the '80s onward, but not in this early one. She looked great.

I would love to know the date of these album covers. I'm assuming this is all pre TDVDS?

Where did you see an unaltered version of that photo? You mean the colour of her legs was normal and not green? Somebody must have photoshopped that picture.

It's a full page photo in the hardcover book "Entertainment Weekly: The 100 Greatest Entertainers" (which you can buy very cheaply) and just the picture is often listed as sexy (which it is) if you search Mary Tyler Moore in Entertainment Memorabilia at eBay. And there's no green.

It looks more like a white sash/belt (?) than a bare midriff. Why did I even start this thread?

I think Mary Tyler Moore looked hot in in Dick Van Dyke and MTM show. Only thing is that I didn't like her shorter hair cut in MTM show.

It looks to me that this much-debated 'tights' photo is actually a B&W photo that was artificially colored, either by hand long ago or in Photoshop. I'd be willing to bet it's a sash/belt instead of bare midrift cuz I've seen those high-waisted belts on dancers of the era in movies & TV, possibly even by Mary herself. I think whoever colorized it was simply unaware it was a belt and made it the same hue as the fleshtones. Seems to me this photo was colorized twice and neither red nor green is the true color of the tights.

I'm glad you started this thread (and subsequently resurrected it 3 years later) cuz I never knew she did album covers. Being a bit of a vinyl collector it looks like there's a few new ones to add to my want list.

At wikifeet.com, I spotted a recently-posted photo of Mary Tyler Moore wearing a bikini. I never expected this. She'd usually wear a one-piece bathing suit (maillot), but look at her, Mary, actually in a bikini! Her belly button is showing, too!
