BOSTON -- Duty calls for an East Boston resident.

Someone is getting called for jury duty...but it's no human.

A family is trying to figure out how their pet cat was summonsed for jury duty.

“I said, Sal, what’s this? You know, I don’t believe it I was shocked,” said Guy Esposito, Sal’s owner.

Sal’s owners, Guy and Anna Esposito, think they may know the source of the mix up: Sal really is a member of the family, so on the last Census form, Anna Esposito listed him under “pets”.

“I just wrote ‘Sal Esposito’, scratched out the ‘dog,’ and wrote, ‘cat,’” said Anna.

Anna filed for Sal’s disqualification of service. However, the jury commissioner was unmoved and denied the request.

Sal’s service date at Suffolk Superior Court is set for March 23. Anna said that if the issue isn’t cleared up by then, she will simply have to bring the cat to court.

Poor Sal. And since cats have nine lives just think how many more times he may be called for jury duty! I've heard that every dog has his day but apparently every cat has his day. In court!

This was on the news tonight, and even a letter from their vet didn't convince the jury commissioner. I'd like to see what happens if Sal's owners actually do have to take him into court. That should be a riot!!

What if the case Sal is assigned to is for cat burglary? Would Sal be disqualified from the case?

That's why you should never list pets as your children.

Can you imagine trying to get through security when they get to the courthouse? I can see the cat getting turned away because no pets are allowed in a federal building. I know, because I took my dog into the lobby of the post office, just to mail something off, I didn't think anything of it, and one of the employees told me that pets weren't allowed, even in the lobby!!

There was no sign on the door, like where it says only service animals allowed, soooo....

I think it's about time a cat got involved in the justice system. Maybe it will get rid of some of the rats!!!!

 This reminds me of the times when Lucy Carmichael and Danny Partridge got notices to appear for Army duty  This cat story would probably make for a funny sitcom episode.

Well, if they won't let the cat in - the owners should just show them the jury summons!!
