An Indian man declared dead surprised hospital staff by waking up during his autopsy.
Doctors were performing a post-mortem examination on Manas Deo on Monday after he had been hit by a car, the Orissa Sambad newspaper reports.
Deo was critically injured Christmas day by a vehicle near Jajpur's Baragadia village on the east coast of India.
Police transported the man to a local hospital where the doctor pronounced him dead.
Prematurely, it turns out.
"It was a surprise for the hospital staff and family members after Manas woke up when the doctors began his autopsy," the paper reported.
After waking up, Deos was taken to a hospital in the nearby city of Cuttack for treatment.
He is presently recovering and will reportedly be released in a week or two.
This is not the first time someone has woken up after being declared dead.
In 2007, a Venezuelan man named Carlos Camejo was taken to the morgue, also following a car accident. When doctors began cutting the victim's face, they were shocked to see him start bleeding and quickly stitched him back up.
His wife reportedly arrived at the morgue to identify the body -- only to find him alive.
Marvo301 01-09-2010, 12:50 AM How freaky would that be? Waking up in the middle of your own autopsy! That would almost be enough to scare you to death! Again!
catlover79 01-09-2010, 12:54 AM Yeah, I saw this reported on my local news tonight. That's something you don't hear about every day!!

No. I would think this quite a unique situation. Must be weird for the family though. They were probably still mourning his death and then suddenly he's alive again.

Sounds like "Breakdown" starring Joseph Cotten but there was no autopsy performed.

That line made me think of the Simpsons episode when Mr. Burns is shot. "Mr. Burns was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead. He was then taken to a better hospital where they upgraded his condition to alive".

JamesG 01-09-2010, 02:22 PM I've heard of some simular incidents.
Sometimes it's people who are paralyzed and they don't investigate the body completely; just assume that they are gone.
You can also sometimes be clinically dead and then your heart can just start up again, with or without medical assistance.

Yeah, I suppose those kind if things happen more often than we think. It's got to be creepy to wake up during your own autopsy!!! Thank goodness he woke up before it was too late!!

It happened once on an episode of M*A*S*H. Frank Burns declared a patient dead and walked away from him. The other doctors checked the patient and discovered he had extreme hypothermia and his extremities were frozen which is why Frank failed to find a pulse. Frank neglected to check the carotid artery (in the throat area) where a pulse could still be found.

He's ALIVE............ He's ALIVE..... (Frankenstein. )
Stephen King also wrote a short story where a guy was bitten by a snake and woke up during his autopsy (but in this version, he was unable to move, so he couldn't tell the doctors he was alive!) It was adapted for the tv series "Nightmares and Dreamscapes." John-Boy Richard Thomas was the lead.

LuLu Rogers 01-09-2010, 10:28 PM I've seen a show about people who have a rare condition that causes them to occasionally pass out. They appear to be dead, no pulse or anything. After a while though, they wake up and are fine.
One woman on the show who had the condition had woken up in the morgue 3 times. She had to get some SERIOUS therapy after that.

I'd need serious therapy if that happened to me, too!!! YIKES!!
