Movie Reviews: Youth In Revolt
Youth in Revolt isn't about youth in revolt, the critics indicate.
Instead, writes Manohla Dargis in the New York Times, it's a "sweet and slight and often charming coming-of-age tale."
Much of the credit goes to Michael Cera, the critics suggest, who again plays an awkward, intelligent young man ready to lose his virginity.
Writes Joe Morgenstern in the Wall Street Journal: "Mr. Cera reminds me of Billie Holiday, who achieved subtle marvels within a severely limited vocal range. His voice is breathy, wistful and piping, yet plaintive and emotive. His abstracted demeanor suggests an emotional range that is narrower still, yet his inhibitions are translucent, rather than opaque; directly behind them, intelligence seethes and passion smolders."
Indeed, comments Michael Phillips in the Chicago Tribune, "Without Cera, Youth in Revolt wouldn't be much of anything."
