View Full Version : What Happened To His Last Name? ClassicTVGal 01-06-2010, 10:14 PM Has anyone ever noticed that Murray is the only character they don't display the last name to during the end credits? McGillicuddy 01-07-2010, 01:58 AM Hey, you're right! Lou, Ted, Georgette, Sue Ann, and Rhoda all have their last names! But Murray is just Murray. Not sure about Phyllis though. catlover79 01-07-2010, 02:09 AM You know, I never noticed that either! Phyllis' full name was always mentioned in the credits - not sure about Bess. Marvo301 01-07-2010, 02:15 AM Wow! First he's the only one not to win an Emmy, now this! Poor Murry! (and Gavin) catlover79 01-07-2010, 02:21 AM Wow! First he's the only one not to win an Emmy, now this! Poor Murry! (and Gavin) Georgia Engel didn't get an Emmy, either. But Gavin went into detail about his disappointment about not winning an Emmys in his book, Back on Course. Marvo301 01-07-2010, 02:27 AM I'm going to have to try and get my hands on a copy of that book! Sounds interesting. Anyway I think Gavin was very deserving of an Emmy for his performance as Murry Slaughter (note use of last name!). He probably just got overlooked because he was part of such an incredible ensemble cast. catlover79 01-07-2010, 02:34 AM Here's what the book looks like: Marvo301 01-07-2010, 02:38 AM Here's what the book looks like: Thanks Monika! It's neat that Gavin and his wife Patti wrote the book together! catlover79 01-07-2010, 03:27 AM Thanks Monika! It's neat that Gavin and his wife Patti wrote the book together! There's a special reason why they co-wrote the book and why the title is Back on Course. But I won't spoil the surprise!! Leigh Ann 01-07-2010, 10:00 AM Wow, I never noticed that either!! I'll have to watch an episode to look at that. :) catlover79 01-07-2010, 12:54 PM Murray was like the Rodney Dangerfield of the show - never got any respect!!  ClassicTVGal 01-07-2010, 01:47 PM Markway, yes, Phyllis had both her first and last name listed. (Er Cloris) Catlover, sometimes they had Bess and other times, Bess Lindstrom.....odd, lol. Anyway, yes, I think that is SO sad! I think Gavin's one of the funniest on the show! ;) GrandGame1440 01-09-2010, 03:05 AM The funny thing is when Joyce Bulifant made an appearance as Marie, they displayed her last name. Same goes for Helen Hunt as Laurie. Even Bonnie!! Take a look, note Murray's displeasure. catlover79 01-09-2010, 03:12 AM ^ Oh man!! Now I feel even sorrier for Murray/Gavin. What's funny is that Sherry Hursey went on to play Al's long-time girlfriend Ilene on Home Improvement. I never realized she was on MTM! Marvo301 01-09-2010, 07:37 PM ^ Oh man!! Now I feel even sorrier for Murray/Gavin. What's funny is that Sherry Hursey went on to play Al's long-time girlfriend Ilene on Home Improvement. I never realized she was on MTM! And of course Helen Hunt went on to co-star on "Mad About You" with Paul Reiser. Boy was she ever young in this screen cap! ClassicTVGal 01-09-2010, 09:36 PM Yeah, lol. And Bonnie was also in, "I Gave At The Office" from Season 4. What eps are those taken from? I can't recall off the top of my head right now. Thanks! GrandGame1440 01-09-2010, 10:14 PM Murray, Marie, and Laurie are from "Murray Ghosts for Ted". Bonnie is from "Mary's Insomna." And since you brought it up, Bonnie was simply credited as "Bonnie" in "I Gave at the Office." ClassicTVGal 01-09-2010, 11:48 PM Thank You! (I should have been specific on which caps I meant, which were his daughters, but thank you!) Looking forward to seeing those when Season 7 DVD comes out! ;) PGood97041 01-10-2010, 06:02 PM OMG, ClassicTVGal, Saturday night I watched two random episodes, and you're right, it DOES just say "as Murray"!!!! That's equal parts hilarious AND interesting! I wonder what the story is behind that! catlover79 01-10-2010, 06:03 PM OMG, ClassicTVGal, Saturday night I watched two random episodes, and you're right, it DOES just say "as Murray"!!!! That's equal parts hilarious AND interesting! I wonder what the story is behind that! I'm curious about it, too!! MTM fan - Holly 01-10-2010, 07:04 PM Maybe Gavin he did not like the last name Slaughter. Or, he did not like the way it was spelled. Or, better yet, maybe they thought just like Elvis, Murray was famous enough and did not need his last name spelled out. Maybe they were waiting to see how the public likes “Slaughter” and planned to change it later on. On another note, I always thought that they gave him that last name to show that he would be the character that had to be “slaughtered” to make Ted look good. I did not know about him not wining any awards in real life. I guess, he was “slaughtered” in real life too! GrandGame1440 01-10-2010, 08:15 PM Or perhaps because he was so good at "slaughtering" Ted! ;) McGillicuddy 01-10-2010, 08:54 PM Well, Lou and Teds' last names were used rather frequently, as Mary always called Lou, Mr. Grant, plus the name Lou Grant is on his office door; Ted of course, is a local celebrity as a newscaster, so his full name, Ted Baxter, is often used when being refered to. That would go with Sue Ann Nivins, too. But with the name Murray Slaughter is just not as likely for him to be called by his full name. Murray Slaughter, doesn't role off the tongue, like Lou Grant or.Ted Baxter. McGillicuddy 01-10-2010, 09:01 PM I finally found another character who didn't have his last name (in the credits) In the second season, Gordy was billed: John Amos as Gordy LittleRickyII 01-10-2010, 09:02 PM Anyway, yes, I think that is SO sad! I think Gavin's one of the funniest on the show! ;) Really? I've always thought Murray was the one character the show could do just fine without. I never thought he was funny, just pretty bland. It seems the character's only purpose was for Mary to bounce her feelings off of when she didn't feel comfortable talking to Lou. He was kind of her office version of Rhoda, except Rhoda was funny. :) GrandGame1440 01-10-2010, 09:12 PM Well, Lou and Teds' last names were used rather frequently, as Mary always called Lou, Mr. That's true, but it still doesn't account for why his wife and daughters last names get shown in the credits. catlover79 01-10-2010, 10:09 PM Or perhaps because he was so good at "slaughtering" Ted! ;) He was! steevo 01-10-2010, 11:26 PM There's a special reason why they co-wrote the book and why the title is Back on Course. But I won't spoil the surprise!! I believe I know what it is, but I won't spoil it either. :D scotsguy 02-13-2010, 04:40 PM Just noticed on the season 6 episode"Menage-a-Lou", Charlene mark2 played by Janis Paige is just credited as Charlene. catlover79 02-13-2010, 04:44 PM I believe I know what it is, but I won't spoil it either. :D Have you read it? McGillicuddy 02-13-2010, 06:02 PM Just noticed on the season 6 episode"Menage-a-Lou", Charlene mark2 played by Janis Paige is just credited as Charlene. That was a FAKE Charlene. The original Charlene was played by Sheree North. catlover79 02-13-2010, 06:09 PM That was a FAKE Charlene. The original Charlene was played by Sheree North. Sheree North is awesome. She was also great as Babs Kramer on Seinfeld! :D scotsguy 02-17-2010, 06:34 PM I much preferred Sheree North as Charlene too,her Charlene was funny too. Sheree played Blanche's sister on Golden Girls too. |
