Has anyone ever noticed that Murray is the only character they don't display the last name to during the end credits?

Hey, you're right! Lou, Ted, Georgette, Sue Ann, and Rhoda all have their last names! But Murray is just Murray. Not sure about Phyllis though.

You know, I never noticed that either! Phyllis' full name was always mentioned in the credits - not sure about Bess.

Georgia Engel didn't get an Emmy, either. But Gavin went into detail about his disappointment about not winning an Emmys in his book, Back on Course.

I'm going to have to try and get my hands on a copy of that book! Sounds interesting. Anyway I think Gavin was very deserving of an Emmy for his performance as Murry Slaughter (note use of last name!). He probably just got overlooked because he was part of such an incredible ensemble cast.

The funny thing is when Joyce Bulifant made an appearance as Marie, they displayed her last name. Same goes for Helen Hunt as Laurie. Even Bonnie!! Take a look, note Murray's displeasure.

Murray, Marie, and Laurie are from "Murray Ghosts for Ted". Bonnie is from "Mary's Insomna." And since you brought it up, Bonnie was simply credited as "Bonnie" in "I Gave at the Office."

Maybe Gavin he did not like the last name Slaughter.
Or, he did not like the way it was spelled.
Or, better yet, maybe they thought just like Elvis, Murray was famous enough and did not need his last name spelled out.
Maybe they were waiting to see how the public likes “Slaughter” and planned to change it later on.


On another note, I always thought that they gave him that last name to show that he would be the character that had to be “slaughtered” to make Ted look good.

Well, Lou and Teds' last names were used rather frequently, as Mary always called Lou, Mr. Grant, plus the name Lou Grant is on his office door; Ted of course, is a local celebrity as a newscaster, so his full name, Ted Baxter, is often used when being refered to. That would go with Sue Ann Nivins, too. But with the name Murray Slaughter is just not as likely for him to be called by his full name. Murray Slaughter, doesn't role off the tongue, like Lou Grant or.Ted Baxter.

Really? I've always thought Murray was the one character the show could do just fine without. I never thought he was funny, just pretty bland. It seems the character's only purpose was for Mary to bounce her feelings off of when she didn't feel comfortable talking to Lou. He was kind of her office version of Rhoda, except Rhoda was funny. :)
