FOX Orders Cop Pilot From Shawn Ryan
January 6, 2010 | By: Gary Susman

Look for another gritty crime drama this fall from Shawn Ryan, the man behind The Shield and Lie to Me.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, FOX has agreed to a pilot for Ryan's new series, Ridealong.

Like Ryan's other popular dramas, Ridealong would center around a charismatic maverick, in this case, a Polish-American Chicago cop, one of the city's toughest.

Describing the show last summer to Variety (subscription required), Ryan said the show would be shot on location in Chicago, that it would focus on cops throughout the police hierarchy (all the way up to the chief, who's a woman), and that it would feature closed-ended cases on each episode, but with season-long arcs about the main character's struggle to clean up violence and corruption in the Windy City.

If it's picked up, the procedural drama would continue Ryan's long association with the FOX family of TV channels.

The Shield, which ran from 2002 to 2008, helped put FX on the cable map, and Lie to Me is a current Monday night hit for FOX.

FX is also airing Ryan's upcoming series Terriers, a comedy drama about an ex-cop who starts a private eye firm.

The third concurrent series on Ryan's plate, Ridealong would be a co-production of FOX sibling 20th TV and Ryan's own MiddKid Productions.

Pilot acquisition season is now in full swing, with networks commissioning first episodes of potential fall series.

Already, FOX has greenlit pilots for Keep Hope Alive, a new comedy from Greg Garcia (My Name Is Earl) and Code 58 (formerly Jack and Dan), procedural starring Bradley Whitford and Colin Hanks as mismatched cops.
