Often, as a show winds down its run, the quality of the episodes takes a dive. That’s really not the case here. It’s just a case of the audience having left the show. A network move, from ABC to NBC, didn’t particularly help matters any. One fun bit of trivia for you television history folks: To start the season, the show was paired with a new sitcom on the lineup that year. Viewership for it started abysmally, and the pairing wasn’t to last. But in the beginning, Taxi was partnered with some wacky new show about a bar called...Cheers.

The only edit I could see was from "Jim's Mario's." Clearly Alex playing the piano was cut out. If you watch the scene, it's obvious.

However, in "Elaine and the Monk" the scene where they both sing Cheek to Cheek WAS included. Jim singing his version of The Bob Newhart Show Theme WAS included. As mentioned, the biggie, You Are the Sunshine of My Life WAS included.

Now for the two-parter. It was originally aired as an hour-long special, according to "Hailing Taxi", a book I have. It even mentions that in the syndicated version, scenes from "Elegant Iggy" were removed for time. I'm assuming it included the piano scene, and maybe that's why Paramount went with the syndicated version, to avoid having to hack through another episode. Then again, maybe for some stupid reason, the original full hour version just no longer exists.

If memory serves me correctly, when Nick at Nite reran the two-part retrospective, both episodes opened with Danny DeVito introducing the show (albeit they were the same scene, shown twice). And on the DVD the second episode does not have the DeVito opening. Also, that poor picture quality (compared to the rest of the episodes) is exactly how Nick at Nite aired it too. So it wasn't just a dvd thing.

All in all, this was a big improvement on season four. One big edit from one episode and then a couple things with the retrospective (which I don't count as an episode, more a special). Season four there were like five or six episodes effected by edits.

BOBBY'S BIG BREAK is cut from the Taxi Celebration on the DVD. It's in the Nick at Nite version.

I had Netflix a few years back. They were very slow.

I need some help on whether there is an edit of something in S5 "Crime And Punishment." I have a memory of watching this episode back in 1982 and after Alex walks away with the ladder leaving Louie stranded up in the perch next to the vent with his stash of goods, I could have sworn that AFTER Louis shouts out to Alex to come back and we see the empty exterior shots, it then came back to Louie in the perch and he then said, "Ah what the hell," and he then pulled out a portable TV and turned it on and pulled out a bottle of booze, prepared to enjoy his stranded night. But every repeat since then, including the DVD just ends with him screaming after Alex and the final shot being the exterior views.

Does anyone else remember this?????
