View Full Version : What was the word Liz said on The Twilight Zone episode she did?
the truth 01-01-2010, 12:21 PM Odd in that she basically had a non-speaking role on a 1961 TZ episode titled "Two" opposite Charles Bronson and when she did speak, I didn't catch what she said.
(Tate, this is your cue, I know you'll know the episode) :)

She said One word as she gazed through her lovely green eyes at the beautiful dress in the window......., it was Russian for Pretty, Prekrazna is how it sounded to me, & yes she sure was later when we saw her in it. :)
Remember her Bewitched cast-mate Agnes Moorehead in a TZ episode called
"The Invaders" about the same time, she also had no dialogue in her episode as well, she like Liz was Brilliant as usual in her portrayal.
Larry Tate :)
the truth 01-01-2010, 12:57 PM Ah, didn't know she was Russian in this. Kind of hard to tell considering Bronson had all the speaking lines and there really weren't many of them for him either. Syfy had this on their marathon last night - actually this morning at 3am. I hadn't seen it before.
catlover79 01-01-2010, 01:41 PM I love that episode!! :D
Zoneboy 01-01-2010, 03:09 PM Her character wasn't acknowledged as being Russian and the word was precrassny.
Larry Tate 01-01-2010, 03:33 PM In subsequent articles it was stated that the writers of the episode & the director had her character as a Russian in their minds what with the cold war on at the time & all, but they didn't want to state it in the show as it would destract from the broader points they were trying to get across so they took the low key approach.

Larry Tate 01-01-2010, 03:37 PM I love that episode!! :D
It is a true classic & was released on DVD volume 4 i think it was, i have it & seeing Liz remastered, & in restored DVD form is well...................lets just say who needs anything when one can have Liz in such fine fettle.
Merry Belated Lizmas to all & a Happy Lizear to all & to all a Liz night.

the truth 01-02-2010, 01:22 AM it would detract from the broader points they were trying to get across
Um.....what were those? I guess I missed it since I was expecting more dialog and it just never came. I recorded it so I'll go back and watch it again, but from what I gathered the main point was that you had two people in an area (undefined pretty much) with little activity in that area due to the mass destruction since it was a war-torn area. And while Liz's character started out being more guarded and paranoid (lacking trust) of this unfamiliar person, I guess by the end of it she had to realize that she too, like the male character, had to give up her old way of thinking if she was going to move forward and continue to live (or rebuild) that destroyed world. Something the male character had already begun.
Sterling said at the end it was a love story. I didn't quite see it that way as much as it was a story about survival. Then again, it was 3 am and I was tired. :D
catlover79 01-02-2010, 01:35 AM That's one of the beauties of TZ. You can see a storyline differently than someone else, and you both would be right! Myself, I actually saw this episode as BOTH a story of survival and a love story. :D
Zoneboy 01-02-2010, 02:04 AM Opening narration:
This is a jungle, a monument built by nature honoring disuse, commemorating a few years of nature being left to its own devices. But it's another kind of jungle, the kind that comes in the aftermath of man's battles against himself. Hardly an important battle, not a Gettysburg or a Marne or an Iwo Jima. More like one insignificant corner patch in the crazy quilt of combat. But it was enough to end the existence of this little city. It's been five years since a human being walked these streets. This is the first day of the sixth year, as man used to measure time. The time? Perhaps a hundred years from now. Or sooner. Or perhaps it's already happened two million years ago. The place? The signposts are in English so that we may read them more easily, but the place is the Twilight Zone.
Complete episode dialogue:
Man: {Pushes a can of food at the woman} Here, invader. Eat. Eat! The only reason I can see for our fighting is that your uniform is a different color than mine. Do you understand my language? I suppose not. Anyway, I repeat. There's no longer any reason for us to fight. There's no longer any armies. Only rags of various colors that were once uniforms, like the two sets of rags we wear. There are no more boundaries, governments, or noble causes. Therefore, no reason to fight. Here ye! Here ye! I do hereby declare peace upon the entire world!
Man: You're very pretty now that I see you clearly, but I'm afraid the only way I could convince you of my honorable intentions would be by force and I'm terribly, terribly sick of fighting.
Man: Hello again.
Woman: {Looking at a dress} Precrassny.
Man: {Grabs the dress and gives it to her} Put it on.
Man: Go away. Go away! You go take your war to more suitable companions. This is civilian territory!
Man: {Looking at the woman} Precrassny.
Closing Narration:
This has been a love story about two lonely people who found each other in the Twilight Zone.
the truth 01-02-2010, 02:49 AM Hard to believe that's the entire dialog of the show. Bronson says about 150 words and basically that's it. Liz has ONE word. I guess in this episode, her facial expressions really carry that character. You read her feelings and mindset through her looks. The environment tells so much of the story, maybe even more than the characters do. It's just hard to imagine so little spoken language in a half hour show.

The whole point of the episode was an anti cold war anti nuclear war statement.
About what would happen if the arms race was not ended, that what we see in the episode would be what we would all end up with if things continued as they were at the time.
They didn't want Politics re USSR/USA to get in the way of this ideological point that they were trying to get across.
I too saw it as a Survival/love story combined with a real connection developing between the two characters.
Perhaps a Survival story about to become a love story is the best way to describe it.
Liz could do more with her facial acting on both a Comedic & Dramatic scale then most actors & actresses could do with dialogue.
She did this superbly on Bewitched & the movie Who's Been Sleeping in my Bed? for example.
