As a Charger fan, I am very happy...

Plain and simple- those losses to Oakland, Kansas City, and Cleveland will be what cost the Steelers a playoff berth.

And this is why I'll NEVER be a Steelers Fan. Not only because I live in the city where they're hated...but they screw it up after a Super Bowl win.

And some teams actually go playoff bound after winning the Super Bowl. Look at the stats....

I'm not even a fan of the Cleveland Steamers! Yes, they're on a hot streak. But during the Chuck Noll years of the Steelers, they won Four Super Bowls and repeated. I haven't seen the Steelers of this decade do that at all...not even make the playoffs. The Steelers didn't even become good until 1972 when they finished 1st in the AFC Central...but lost to the Dolphins in the AFC Championship. But in the 70's, the Steelers were in 1st Place 7 times, 6 in the 90's, and 5 in the 2000's! But unlike the Steelers of the 90's they went to the Super Bowl...and won (So did the Steelers of the 2000's, but 2005 they were in 2nd)!

The Cleveland Steamers lost steam in 1974 when they were 4-10! Before then, they were Playoff-bound with the exception of 1956 when they went 5-7. They even went undefeated in 1948 in the AAFC and were always in 1st Place in the 40's.

But it seems that the only way the Browns are going to the Super Bowl is...if I take them. That's why I'm not a true Die-Hard Browns Fan.

I've been a Steeler fan since Noll and Mean Joe got there... and they DEFINITELY do not deserve to make the playoffs this year imo.

The '80 Steelers (after the '79 team won the S.B. against the Rams) were collectively getting old... they finished 9-7 and were eliminated on the final day of the season when they lost to the Chargers. The defense had lost a lot of power from the previous years (even though most of the guys were still there). They just grew old together.

lol, probably the only Steeler team I DIDN'T like was the 2005 team that won the Super Bowl against Seattle. Normally, of course, it's great when one's team wins a title, but what I couldn't stand about that team was the idea that "hey, the BUS (Jerome Bettis) is retiring, so we gotta win the Super Bowl for the BUS!!... the Super Bowl's in Detroit, the BUS'S home town... we gotta send THE BUS out with a Super Bowl win on his home turf!!!".

The Steelers I grew up watching wanted to win the Super Bowl, all right... but they wanted to win it because they wanted to be the best team... not because this guy was retiring or that guy was retiring. They won the Super Bowl on principle. They didn't need any fake motivation to try to win a championship. Can you imagine Jack Lambert saying "hey guys, Ray Mansfield's retiring after this season, let's try to win the Super Bowl for him, ok?" They would have thrown him out of Pittsburgh on his a$$!

I can't stand athletes (or teams) who can't seem to find the motivation to win a championship unless some teammate is retiring...which is why I don't like the 2005 Steeler team. And I sort of liked Cower as a coach (gotta be tough taking over for Chuck Noll), but he's terrible in the CBS studios.



Pittsburgh can clinch a playoff spot with:

* a win (vs. Miami) and a Houston loss or tie (vs. New England) and a N.Y. Jets loss or tie (vs. Cincinnati) OR
* a win and a Houston loss or tie and a Baltimore loss or tie (vs. Oakland) OR
* a win and a N.Y. Jets loss or tie and a Baltimore loss or tie and a Denver loss or tie (vs. Kansas City)

Not looking good, but stranger things have happened. I haven't checked to see if any of the teams that have clinched would benefit from losing in Week 17 (in order to get a better first round matchup)

Bradshaw's last full season with the Steelers was the 1982 season (that was a strike season, so there were 9 games on the schedule).

He played one game in 1983, but IIRC, he was forced to retire because of elbow problems. In that game, against the Jets, Bradshaw threw two TD passes, but had to be replaced by Cliff Stoudt.

Yes, exactly, and good point about Noll. In those days, the Steelers always tried to win the Super Bowl, but once they lost the core of that awesome 70s team, it took a while to get back.

Another motivation story... in January of 1979, the Steelers played the Cowboys in S.B. XIII... the first rematch in S.B. history. The Steelers had previously beaten the Cowboys in S.B. X, 21-17.

Anyway, that was the year of Thomas "Hollywood" Henderson... he was a big-time trash talker, and he spent the entire two weeks prior to the game talking about how stupid Terry Bradshaw was... he said "Bradshaw coulnd't spell 'cat' if you spotted him the 'c' and the 'a' ". (I actually thought that was a funny line, although it obviously didn't apply to Bradshaw).

As the game approached, we heard a lot of talk about how Henderson's comments are providing "bulletin board material" for the Steelers. But then someone asked Jack Ham of the Steelers about that... Ham said "no, we don't care what Henderson said. You're not going to see 40 guys come out frothing at the mouth to get Hollywood Henderson. If you need something like that to get you motivated to play in the Super Bowl, then you're already in trouble. This is the biggest game of the year!"

That was the pefect attitude to take, I thought. Why would ANYONE need extra motivation in order to win the Super Bowl, especially once you GET THERE??? That's why I'm sick of players who have to constantly find new ways to motivate themselves to win a freakin' title. Shouldn't that be the goal of EVERY player?

^And even if I was a Steelers Fan...I would only be one because of the Seniority that they gave Pittsburgh in the 70's, like what the Packers did for Green Bay in the 60's and the Browns gave Cleveland in the 50's.

And in a way...I feel that Art Modell ruined the Browns once he bought them in 1961. Because they only won one Championship and that was in 1964! He was planning to get rid of the Browns even before 1995.
