Imagine if Chuck Cummingham had return during that funky season that starred Billy Warlock and Linda Purl. I don't know how his absence would have been explained though..anyone have any ideas?

Well the Christmas episode that was recut for flashback use in 1977 (Scott Baio is being told about it by Al) states Chuck was in college....but after we can maybe assume he went into the military and got caught up in the then escalating Vietnam conflict? Maybe he turned anti-war protestor and the Cunninghams were ashamed and disowned him.....

Or perhaps after turning anti-way, he defected to Canada. Being that the series ended before the Nixon administration was supposed to have happened, we never got to see him pardoned!

Chuck became the leader of a religious cult.

I completely agree. In the few appearances that he made, I thought the Chuck character was great. Actually I sorry that the faded away into oblivion.

sorry to be a Chuck hater, but he never did much for me. In fact, the only episode to me that he was absolutely necessary to the plot in was "Richie Moves Out." Other than that....

it is always interesting to read fans' speculations of what happened to him. I always thought going into the service as a possible explanation too. Also, (and I know this may be a stretch), maybe he was a foster child, and just lived with the Cunninghams for a year or two until he aged out and went to college? Then for whatever reason chose not to have any contact with them?

If memory serves correctly, I believe the National Enquirer reported that Chuck was going to come back to fill the void created by Ron Howard's departure as Richie.

Instead, we got Roger.

They also reported that Richie's son was going to be named "Opie."

2 for 2, Enquirer.

The character of Chuck simply became unnecessary when Fonzie became Ritchie's mentor. I think Chuck witnessed a major crime and went into the witness protection program!

I think a more likely explanation is that Mork from Ork returned and met Richie Ralph and Potsie at Arnold's for a few sodas, and as you know, soda makes Orkans go "berzurb"...and once Mork got his drink on, he flew his egg back through the time barrier and created havoc with Cunningham history, preventing Chuck from ever having been born, then changing the floorplan of the Cunningham's house.
Okay, not too good.

Remember the Island of Misfit Toys in Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer? I always say Chuck Cunningham is on the Island of Misfit TV characters along with Judy Winslow, Carl Dixon, etc.

I'd go with either one of these.

I think Chuck was just a figment of our collective imaginations!! :D

I grew up on comic books and science fiction, so Alan's explanation is very plausible. Plus, I just saw Thor and am riding a post-comic book movie high.

And Monika, you inspired a great idea for a TV-movie: Revenge Of The Exiled Sitcom Characters.

Actually, I remember 2 Happy Days Reunion shows, the more recent one, (I think the 30th Anniversary) included both Chucks, and then I remember another reunion, a smaller group, which ended with Tom Bosley, all of a sudden, shouting "CHUCK...Where's Chuck???", as he looked around.

That was the 1992 reunion show. It was good, but it was so painfully obvious that it was scripted. Well, it felt scripted to me.

I wish they would just let the actors say what they really want to say in these shows when they're supposed to be offering spontaneous personal remembrances.

Susan Olsen was rightfully upset when they did a Brady Bunch reunion where they all sat around and were to offer remembrances of their time on show and she was handed a script for her responses. She thought they were just going to be questioned and share off-the-cuff responses with Jenny McCarthy, the hostess.

I don't know why, but I remember when Richie and Ralph came back for the last episode (where Joanie and Chachi got married), I was half-expecting Chuck to show up also. But when Howard mentioned something about "watching our two children grow up" I realized Happy Days ended in a reality where Chuck never existed.

There was a conspiracy regarding Chuck's disappearance.

Only Howie knows -- and he aint talkin!

I like the Mork time warp explanation. Having grown up on sci-fi and fantasy, that's the most probable explanation for why they so conveniently forgot him at the beginning of season three.
