In the first episode, The Flintstone Flyer, Barney's eyes are empty circles. In several shots his eyes are colored in: a couple of times when he's working on the flyer and when he's at Fred's bedside.

Does anyone know which episode Barney's eyes started being solid black?

Thanks, Mickey. I didn't realize it happened so late in the series!

His voice was really high pitched in the first season. Than it changed to his regular deeper Barney voice!

Watch youtube episodes of Mel Blanc he sounds like the early Barney voice. He was in an episode of The Beverly Hillbillies as a cab driver and he sounded like the later Barney voice. It was really cool to see.

Barney looked shorter and thinner in the first season when he had the high pitched voice too!

The reason Barney's voice changed is because Mel Blanc was involved in a very serious car accident. In fact he nearly died. While he was recovering another voice actor took over as Barney for a few episodes. Once Mel felt up to it he started recording Barney's dialogue from his sickbed. (Hanna-Barbera set up recording equipment in his bedroom) Mel found he could no longer do the high pitched voice that he originally had done for Barney so he found a new lower pitched voice to use going forward.

Oh wow!! I didn't know that!! A shame about the accident, but the lower voice was better for Barney I thought! :)
