View Full Version : First time Lifetime aired the Kurt Cobain segment?
Was that the first time they showed it? I thought I read somewhere they had not aired it as well as the Tupac segment.
What did you think about it? It raised some interesting facts. Murder or Suicide?

If you are in any way.. a fan of this man, you will know, that unless, he wrote the suicide note, and then was murdered, there is no way on earth that those words, could have ever been written by another human being. That note was kurt's heart and soul. I know his poetry, and words, and there is no other. He is dead, he killed himself, he was a sad, sad, man, and a heroin addict. Let him rest in peace.

I'm not a fan, I just thought it was interesting how they had a hand-writing specialist analyze it and they thought the last few lines were not written by him and they thought the note was a 'goodbye' note from his music career and not a suicide note. Regardless if you think it was a suicide or murder, I thought they raised interesting facts on both sides of the case.
The Tupac segment has not aired on Lifetime as far as I know..

thanks for telling me.
unsolvedfan19 08-11-2001, 08:24 AM Ya I think they first showed this in 1997. This is another segment Lifetime hasn't shown. I dont know why Lifetime doesn't air some episodes. Maybe in the future

Join me ... Perhaps you may be able to help solve a mystery :)
To the best of my knowledge, it WAS the first time the Kurt Cobain segment was shown on Unsolved Mysteries. Here's a list of other segments that (as far as I can tell) were never shown on Lifetime:
1) The murder of Tupac Shakur.
2) A 1989 segment in which two kids were abducted and later photographed.
3) The 1987 murder of a Texas gunsmith (the segment aired early in the 1989-90 season).
4) A 1994 segment about a mother and her 5-year-old boy who were murdered in Texas during the 1981 Christmas season.
I know there are more UM segments that haven't materialized on Lifetime, but the ones that I just mentioned stand out in my mind. I'd be happy to hear from anyone who recall having seen any of these particular segments.
I meant that it WAS the first time the UM segment about Kurt Cobain was shown on Lifetime. Sorry about the little error and any confusion I might have caused about saying.
shaggy_ed 10-05-2001, 06:17 PM I am writing a research paper about Kurt Cobain, whether it was a murder or a suicide. I was wondering if anyone has a recording of that episode I could borrow, or some places where I could get the information that was on that show. This paper is due soon so get ahold of me as soon as possible. My e-mail address is Shaggy_Ed@hotmail.com

DALLASTEXAN!! 12-06-2024, 03:07 PM It's interesting to see a thread from 2001! A lot of people have covered Kurt's death outside of UM and a lot more details are out now of Kurt's final months/weeks/days. Kurt planned his suicide over a long period and actually almost died from an attempt in Rome. It's clear to me that Kurt wrote the note over a period as well. The main argument now seems to be that if someone wanted to murder him they could have gotten away with it because of how suicidal and drugged out that he was.

Typical Unsolved Mysteries. Take a suicide that the coroner, ballistics expert, and handwriting expert all rule a 100% suicide, and exploit it. High Times did the same thing in 1996, and I ended up buying the magazine just for the story. It was, of course, ridiculous.
Let the man rest in peace. I loved UM, but the more research I do on many cases, the more frustrated I get, knowing that UM was more interested in TV ratings, than presenting cases by factual evidence.

Let's review, shall we....
One of the last songs that Cobain wrote was titled "I hate myself and I want to die." Cobain had bad problems with heroin. Less than one month before he died, he attempted suicide in Italy, while on tour, and as a result, had to fly back to Washington State, and enter a drug treatment centre. Just over two weeks later, he walks out of the centre, returns home, and less than 48 hours later, he kills himself.
But why let the facts get in the way of a good narrative?

I think the rehab center was in LA and flew back to Seattle after leaving rehab. that's when he ran into the G&R bass player who was one of the last credible individuals to spend time with him. Kurt's fate was already sealed at that point. He was threatened and guilted into seeking rehab by C. Love, Nirvana mates, and closest family members. By that point he wanted to end his marriage and quit the band. He also purchased the gun that he used before he went to rehab.
that said, I don't think it is a good segment for UM because I don't see it as a mystery. But I understand why the took on the segment back then. Like you said they were looking for ratings. a lot of credible detail has come out after the segment aired.

You are correct. I remember reading about Cobain flying back to Seattle, when he spotted one of the members of GNR on the plane, and ended up chilling out with him. I can't remember which GNR member flew to Seattle with him, but after Cobain's death, he was saying that he was glad the last encounter with Cobain was positive, since it was well known that Axl Rose and some members of Gune N Roses were feuding with Nirvana, for two years after Nirvana refused an offer by GNR to be their opening act. I think I recall him mentioning Kurt's mood as being "heavy" IIRC.

I'm not convinced Cobain would have quit the music business, or divorce Courtney Love. Michael Stipe of REM had said later in 1994, that he and Krt had gotten together at the beginning of the year, and were going to work on material (REM and Nirvana) together, once Cobain was finished touring. It was also reported that Kurt and Courtney had somewhat of an "open" relationship. She may have been seeing Trent Reznor on the side, when Cobain was on tour with Nirvana.

It was Duff McKagan. I think Duff was friendly with Nirvana because Duff was from Seattle and they all knew each other. They sat on the plane together from LA according to Duff's account. I think Duff said that he offered Kurt a ride from the seattle/tacoma airport but Kurt declined because he had arrangements. Duff mentioned in an interview that he really couldn't tell that there was anything extraordinarily wrong with Kurt. he mentions that he wishes that he could have talked Kurt into hanging out after the airport because he felt they had fun hanging out on the plane drinking together. He knew that Kurt was struggling with heavy addiction, but he also said in the interview that he was also an addict at that time so nothing seemed off to him at the time.
I agree, I don't think Kurt was quitting music. I think he wanted to quit Nirvana when he realized that he couldn't escape the chaos and couldn't live up to the demand.
