Greetings,
I am a first-time poster and a longtime fan of the show (also somewhat of a in-the-closest fan since a 35-year-old male doesn't really fit the show's demographic -- I just love the time period).
Anyway, since there are many "experts" on here, I have been curious about something for a number of years.
When Melissa Sue Anderson auditioned or received the part to play Mary, did she know that she would be playing a blind character down the road in the series?
Also, did she ever get any kind of awards for her portrayal of Mary?
I really think she did a great job as the Mary character evolved.

Melissa did get an Emmy nomination for the episode in which Mary goes blind ("I'll Be Waving As You Drive Away"). I think she had to have known Mary would go blind down the road, as it happened to the real Mary and was in the books. Here's an interview:

I never knew that Marry went blind because I never read the books. I remember when I first saw that episode when it originally aired. I was just stunned. It was one of the first tv episodes that really got to me. She deserved an emmy.

Yeah, I think it was a bonus on one of the DVD sets.
