I would've posted sooner, but I'm still dealing with this.

She had been moping around the past week, I just thought she was depressed. Then I thought she might be in pain. She also hadn't been eating. I made an appt for her for Tues. Mon. night, she went to drink from the water bowl and she drank almost 5 min. She's never done that. She then threw it back up. She's never done that, either. She did the same thing Tues. morning. Her back legs were also shaking.

At the vet, they ran some tests. They said she was pretty bad - she was very weak, severely dehydrated, diabetic and was in renal failure. They gave her an insulin shot and told me to bring her back first thing in the morning because they wanted to hook an IV up to her and try to get her kidneys going. If they couldn't get her kidneys going, nothing else mattered. Other organs were going to start shutting down. When they were contacted in the afternoon, they said there was no change and there was nothing else they could do. Since there was no hope, they suggested I have her put to sleep. This was probably the worse thing I have ever had to do. I have had Penny since she was 2. She was only 12!! I at least thought she would live to 15 or 16.

I know alot of you on here are animal lovers, so I know that you know what I'm going through. Penny was my closest dog, out of all the ones I have(although I do love them all). She is constantly on my mind, and I know it'll be a while before my eyes don't tear up when people mention her.

Thanks for listening.

Ohhhh no. That's how my cat, Lucy, died... It was back in 2004. I made a thread here when she was dying. :( I had no idea she was diabetic until it was WAAAAAAAY too late. Not-eating-and-drinking late. That was 5 1/2 years ago and I still feel awful about not having recognized the signs sooner. She was only 9...

:bighug: I know it's not easy... I've been there. Don't kick yourself... You didn't know. But you did *see* it and tried to help her before she died.

I am so very sorry for your loss. Please be comforted by the fact that you gave this animal a wonderful, loving home for many years and provided it with great companionship. I firmly believe you will meet Penny again.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Our pets are a part of our family, and it's heartbreaking when we lose them. Penny waits patiently for you on the other side of Rainbow Bridge. You will hold her in your arms again, one day.

:bighug: I am so sorry. I lost my precious Chelsea in the beginning of the year and it was so tough on me too. I feel in my heart that she has her wings. I think your Penny does too. I send you a huge cyberhug. :bighug:

Thank you everybody for your kind words. They really mean alot.

Retro4Life, I like to think I gave Penny a good life. My mom told me I saved her from the outside world.

And Janice, I've seen that rainbow bridge link before, and no matter whose pet has died, whether it's mine or somebody else's, it's still both very sad and happy to watch.

Thanks again.;)

I am so sorry. :( Losing a dog is like losing a brother or sister. The pain cuts really deep and I don't think it ever truly goes away.

Thanks so much, Lauren & Mike.

I read about Snuggles on FB, and sorry that you're dealing with the same thing, Lauren.:(

Mike, I couldn't help but think of Duke, and what you went through. It seems you're still dealing with it and I have a feeling it'll be the same with me.

It's amazing what a void pets leave when they pass on.

It's amazing what a void pets leave when they pass on.
It is amazing. When my cat Foxy died four years ago, I was inconsolable. He was almost 17 and a Persian. I've often said that he looked exactly like the Fancy Feast cat. He was an "only kitty", but after he died, we bought two more Persians, Lily and Cesar. We adore them, and they bring so much joy to our lives. Still, like you can't replace people, you can't replace animals. I cried every day for at least a year after Foxy died, and I still break down to this day. I don't think I'll ever love another animal the way I loved him.

I know grief. Cold hard grief. I've lost two sisters (age 35 and 49), and my parents two months apart in 2002. With that said, losing Foxy was every bit as painful as losing my other family members. I knew losing Foxy would hurt, but I never imagined it would hurt as much as it did. Even writing about him brings tears to my eyes. I pray God gives you the strength to deal with this devastating loss. Take solace in knowing that you gave Penny a warm and loving home. You were a good Mommy.

Wow, Janice, I can't imagine what you had to deal with, losing so much in such a short time.:(

Now that brought tears to my eyes. Today I looked at some pictures of her that I had hanging in a frame, more tears. When our handbell choir went to Animal Kingdom to perform last night, Disney's supposed to be the happiest place on earth, but I was a bit down. I know this will take a while. It has been a long while that I had a pet I was so close to, pass away.

I had never heard of the "rainbow bridge" until my cat Tyler died in 2006. I found it tremendously comforting.

I wonder if the author intended any connection to Bifrost, the rainbow bridge mentioned in Norse mythology. At any rate, it's a wonderful image, isn't it?

Thank you. I know you have a dachshund, too. Penny was a doxie, just a big one. When I first got her, I thought she was a doxie/beagle mix. More of a long-legged doxie, a bigger body, but she definitely had that dachshund face.

Thank you, Tom. I named mine that because I got her in Pennsylvania, but she was a copper color, too, so alot of people thought I named her Penny because of her color!! It only made sense.;)

I'm sure that years later, I'll still be missing my Penny dearly, like you're missing your Penny.

MAY I GO?

May I go now?
Do you think the time is right?
May I say goodbye to pain filled days
and endless lonely nights?

I've lived my life and done my best,
an example tried to be.
So can I take that step beyond
and set my spirit free?

I didn't want to go at first,
I fought with all my might.
But something seems to draw me now
to a warm and loving light.

I want to go. I really do.
It's difficult to stay.
But I will try as best I can
to live just one more day.

To give you time to care for me
and share your love and fears.
I know you're sad and afraid,
because I see your tears.

I'll not be far, I promise that,
and hope you'll always know
that my spirit will be close to you
wherever you may go.

Thank you so for loving me.
You know I love you, too.
That's why it's hard to say goodbye
and end this life with you.

So hold me now just one more time
and let me hear you say,
because you care so much for me,
you'll let me go today.

Dedicated to everyone who has ever had to put down a beloved pet.

I'm so sorry to hear that. And I know how you feel "cheated" about her age, but really, that isn't too bad considering. I felt the same way when I lost my 2 cats this past July at age 14 each (within 2 1/2 wks of each other). They're buried out back and now the snow is covering them, but the solar lights I put out still shine for a bit most nights and it comforts me.

Know that you did the right thing and it was your only choice. Your dog understood that - I'm sure they do. And as Janice said, will be waiting happily at The Rainbow Bridge for you. In the meantime, they become our guardian angels. :bighug:

Thank you!! Yes, I do feel cheated that she went so soon and so suddenly. I was thinking though, that whether she went at 12 or 14 or 16, you're never really ready. It would still be heartbreaking. I had a friend whose cat died last year, he was 20!! She still gets emotional about him.

They asked if I wanted Penny back. I had her cremated. I couldn't bear to bury her. A few years ago, my sister had some rabbits die, we buried them in the back yard. Penny dug them back up, I freaked out a little. I ask my brother to re-bury them. I can see if I buried Penny, one of our other animals digging her up, too!! Sorry, this sounds weird, but sometimes we deal with our grief with a little humor.
