What software do you use for the conversion, or what dvd recorder? I have an HD DVR from Time Warner, and a SONY UP-CONVERT DVD recorder.

ok simple answer kind of. what i did with this is i have a directv HD DVR HR21 and through S-Video it allows me to record the widescreen feed straight to dvd without letterboxing or making it 4:3. Most cable companys have it locked to where whenever it outputs through s-video or composite (red/white/yellow) it automatically letterboxes your stuff which gives it the wrong aspect ratio. So far i know that cox and a few others are locked which sucks so you cant really record to dvd in the correct aspect ratio.

What i use and think is the absolute best is
DirecTV HR-21 HD DVD to Philips DVDR 3575H/37 through S-Video (But i use the best s-video cable and it makes a difference) (i use this one http://www.bettercables.com/s-video-silver-serpent.aspx)

then from there i record SP and then transfer the raw vobs to my computer remove commercials with out converting or anything with a program called MPEG VCR (http://www.womble.com/products/vcr.html)

Once commercials are removed what i do is use Adobe Photoshop to make menus and then if the show is wide screen i use Tmpeg DVD Author 3 to put my menu into and the raw mpegs for a nice wide screen menu. If its full screen stuff i ussually use Ulead DVD Workshop 2. because i can add cool intro videos before and i like making custom buttons on it better. but i dont know how to make stuff 16:9 in it.

I used to do direct stream .ts to my hard drive from the cable box to my computer via firewire but what i have now blocks it. but that gives best quality with 0 compression. it just depends on what your box lets you do. also if your box doesnt auto letter box but squizes the 16:9 image into 4:3 they have a great program called restream that puts it back to 16:9 with no compression or loss in quality.

I know i just said a lot but hope that helps. i have had lots of training in photoshop so i am pretty good at making menus. if you can tell me what the box name and model number is i can tell u how to do it best for yourself. hopefully it doesnt have auto letterbox
