View Full Version : Wishing I was more excited...
BeatleMoe 12-06-2009, 12:49 AM ...about the upcoming release of season 5 on DVD. Just not looking forward to the hack jobs simply because of music clearances. I have a strong feeling that episodes like "Jim's Inheritance" in which Stevie Wonder's "You Are the Sunshine of my Life" is a crucial song to the plot is going to be cut. From where I read HAILING TAXI, it looked like some the music is very cruical to some of the episodes. I was highly disappointed that ELEGANT IGGY was missing about a minute and a half for music, and it was Christopher Lloyd's Emmy Winning episode.
Hopefully they will leave some these episodes alone.

I share your fear that the episodes will have all the copywritten music in them cut. In the season 4 set, I found several episodes where even minor muiscal elements are cut. Like where the young African American cabbie sings show tunes to Alex in her cab, or when Louie sets the mouse free and sings 'Born Free', etc.
I suspect the Stevie Wonder song was cut from Jim's Inheritcance, unfortunately. Fingers crossed that I'm wrong!

I just read from a review that while there are music replacements in Season 5, "You are the Sunshine of My Life" IS included in "Jim's Inheritance." I am happy to report that.
Chocolate Moose 12-19-2009, 06:36 PM I am sure that we are all going to enjoy them. they're not due out for another few days. Where are you getting them from ?

I will find that site and post the link. I just wanted to read a review first, and I am gonna get it regardless. Just wish CBS DVD would put a little more care into these sets.

Found the review last Thursday or Friday myself.
I'd still say to be cautious, but we'll know for sure tomorrow.
Adamantium 12-23-2009, 09:40 PM Okay, got my copy today.
In the first episode, some people were concerned over Jim singing "The Bob Newhart Show" theme song. Don't worry, it's on the DVD.
Jim's Inheritance DOES have "You Are the Sunshine of My Life" in that. Thank God!! I was positive this would be gone, and that upset me because it's one of my favorite scenes of the whole show. So I'm very happy that this scene is intact.
However, and I didn't check all the episodes, just a couple I knew had music in them. "Jim's Mario's" had the whole musical scene cut. They go from Alex at the piano, nervous telling Jim he's not going to sing in front of all those people, to everyone applauding and in a good mood.

Well, at least we got Stevie Wonder and TBNS theme!! :D
Chocolate Moose 12-23-2009, 11:10 PM Good for you. I got screwed.
Instead of Blockbuster sending me the new dvds of Taxi and Paper chase that I requested in the first 8 slots of my queue, i got a mix of a movie, happy days and a will and grace.
so much for a taxi filled holiday weekend.
The Obsolete Man 12-23-2009, 11:32 PM Posted this somewhere else yesterday, so here you go.
Disc 1, all episodes are between 24:10 and 23:59.
Disc 2, All episodes are between those times except Elaine and the Monk (23:47), Sugar Ray Nardo (23:31) and A Taxi Celebration (21:59?!)
Disc 3, A Taxi Celebration part 2 (22:19), Alex Gets Burned By An Old Flame (23:54... possibly uncut), Louie and the Blind Girl (23:23), Jim's Mario's (23:40) . Anything I haven't named on Disc 3 is at the 24 minutes and a few seconds mark.
Can't tell you anything about music substitution, haven't gotten into the discs yet. Just checked times. All I can confirm is that the one piece of music we all feared would go, stayed.
And as for those clip shows... wonder what's up with that? Was that originally an hourlong episode and is shorter after being split up, were chunks taken out of them, what?
catlover79 12-24-2009, 01:59 AM Of all the songs in all the DVD releases - I'm the most glad they included the boogaloo song when Alex was dancing in the gay bar. That song RULES!!

I think they used the syndicated versions of the TAXI CELEBRATION, so they could be split across two DVDs. I know that the part in "Blind Date" was cut where Alex and Angela are having dinner at Mario's and she walks out on him.
I was very unhappy about Jim's Mario's being cut, because the cut was PAINFULLY obvious. It didn't make sense to have Alex nervous about playing the piano to not having it shown. I know it would have shortened it more, but if they were gonna cut it, then they should have cut Alex being nervous, it ruined the whole joke. If it ran 23:40, then about 30 seconds to a minute of that tune was cut.
But, in the case of "Jim's Inheritance" I was extremely happy about that. It was such a moving, pivotal scene. I hope to see a review up here soon on this season, but I am glad that we have the series now. I'm not gonna say COMPLETE but we have the series.

BeatleMoe, thank you for the update!
While I'm sad there are some music cuts, I'm VERY relieved to hear the segment including the Stevie Wonder song wasn't cut. That would've been....unjust.
I haven't got the set yet, but I can already hear Iggie muttering to his dear deceased father, "Dad, you liked Stevie Wonder?"

It seems that "Jim's Mario's" looks like the only episode I've seen so far that has music edits. It's possible that the 23 1/2 minute episodes could have run short. There are MASH episodes that ran in the 23 minute range in the 7th and 8th seasons, and even a season three episode of TAXI (Louie's Rival) ran about 23 1/2 minutes.
I could be wrong, but it's possible. It looks like with this final season, they kept just about all of the music intact, but as I said, I could be wrong.
