When do you think the cast knew how sick she was ?

I saw a scene from season 2 with her and my heart broke. :(

From everything I've read, Alice knew she was terminally ill when she signed on for the role. But she never complained, didn't want anyone to know. For a long time, her husband was the only one who knew how seriously ill she was. Here are some vintage articles that tell her story beautifully:

Yeah, you could tell how much weight she lost compared to season 1. But God bless her, she kept working almost until the end. So sad she couldn't have hung on longer so she could accept her Emmy award. :(
