I am sure by now most of you have heard the latest announcement about mammograms and breast cancer. I have to say that I dont agree with the decision that woman should wait till their 50, and do this every other year.

There have been several cases of women getting breast cancer who were under 50. I know a girl who got this twice before she was 40 (thank God she is fine now).

Frankly I dont agree with this decision, which was made just so insurance companies can save money.

What are your thoughts?

Agreed - especially if there's a family history.

It should be the woman's choice when to have it done. Nothing more to say.

I think they should have it before they turn 50....

But maybe as long as they have a self breast exam and have the yearly physical they should not have to have a mammogram unless absolutely sure.

I'm going to post this here too since it does have to do with women..

I heard that they suggested women have pap smear after they turn 21. I wish they'd say that if you are sexually active, you need one.

But if you are not sexually active, you DON'T need one.

This study didn't say women under 50 shouldn't have mammograms. It said mammograms are less effective for women under 50 because they have denser breast tissue. So all it means is that if your a woman under 50 you have to weigh the limited effectiveness of the mammogram against the risks (i.e. exposing your body to radiation) and decide if it's worth for you. Of course if you have a family history it probably is worth it. Ultimately it's a choice that has to be made by a woman and her doctor.
