It was a christmas episode. there was a poor vagrant, a very lonely man. and he didn't have anywhere to spend (either it was christmas or thanksgiving) and kept trying to get himself arrested so he could spend the holiday in jail, but kept being given breaks he didn't want.

Could someone help me and let me know if they remember this episode?

TAGS only has one Christmas ep, number 11 of season 1, "The Christmas Story."
That old man was no bum. His name is Ben Weaver and he owns the largest store in town, Weaver's Department Store, but few folks like him. He's very unfriendly; you could say he's Mayberry's Scrooge. This is his first appearance and no family was ever mentioned for him.
He was lonely that Christmas eve and, as you say, trying to get arrested so he could join in the party at the jail. It was moved there from Andy's house because Ben insisted a man be jailed on the holiday eve for moonshining. Andy didn't have the heart to take him away from his family so he deputized his family so they could be at the jail too. Aunt Bee and Ellie were also deputized.
Andy figured out what Ben was up to after giving him a few breaks, then arrested him, but Ben wanted to stop by his store before going to jail to pick up a few things. At the jail Ben acted like the things he packed were mistakes and handed out gifts to everyone.
