View Full Version : Are Cigarette Vending Machines Still Out There?
JamesG 11-12-2009, 11:50 AM The thread on pay phones made me think of something that I haven't seen around in a while - cigarette vending machines.
One of the only ones I remember seeing was in the bar of the local bowling alley near me and they had it up until the late 90s.
Are cig machines still around today?
Zoneboy 11-12-2009, 12:01 PM I haven't seen one in several years. My grandparents had one in their restaurant which was serviced by the same co. as the jukebox. I don't know if there are any still out there that are operational. My guess is that they may have been banned in most areas as a means of preventing those that are underage from gaining access to the cigarettes.

That could be it. Also, I would think the new laws and regulations on public smoking banning could be a part of it.
You could smoke in a lot more places years ago than you can do so today.
catlover79 11-12-2009, 12:38 PM Gosh, I haven't seen those in years. I still remember when our local Pizza Hut had one.
browneyes106 11-12-2009, 03:02 PM I haven't seen one in years. My dad's friend who owned a sports bar had one until around 1994 or 1995.
gidgetgrape 11-12-2009, 03:41 PM I forgot about those! I don't think they are still around.
Marvo301 11-12-2009, 06:37 PM I know in Canada they passed a law some years back to restrict cigarette vending machines to locations where underage people aren't allowed. (i.e. bars, nightclubs etc.)
The last place I remember seeing one was in Europe.
MickeyMac 11-12-2009, 06:55 PM Come to think of it, its been some time since I have seen one of these.
JamesG 11-12-2009, 07:17 PM Since making the thread I asked around locally and some said that you can still find them in my area around the OTBs (Off-Track Betting).
I haven't been in one of those places though I've seen them around.
MrCleveland 11-12-2009, 08:33 PM With the smoke-free policy in Ohio...they're probably extinct.
coffield3 11-12-2009, 11:12 PM We have smoke free pubs of course..but they still sell Cigarette's for those who want them...then they decide to litter the pavement with butt ends even though there's a box on the wall outside to put them in!!..why do they flick them on the street??..
Schmoopie 11-12-2009, 11:45 PM I think I saw one of those in a really old hotel a while back. I totally remember those. I bet they are pretty much extinct, though; especially since smoking is so frowned upon these days.
Faith 11-13-2009, 01:21 AM I remember seeing one in a hotel last year, but other than that I haven't seen one in 12 years.
Number 9 Dream 11-13-2009, 01:46 AM My local diner had one up until the late 90's/early 2000's. They got rid of it when smoking was banned in public places.
comedyfreak 11-13-2009, 06:49 AM They had one in our lunch room where I work but, that was back in '88 don't remember when they took it out.
MickeyMac 11-28-2009, 02:11 PM This bar I go to has a cigarette vending machine. Wasnt sure if it worked but last night I saw two different people buying cigarettes from it, so it works. They charge 8 bucks for a pack. Man I am glad I dont smoke.
angiefan 11-29-2009, 10:12 PM When I went to I think Galaxy Lanes? It's in the bar.
