I have noticed around town lately that a lot of the pay phones are being taken out. With all the cell phones, there really is not much need for them anymore.

I have been noticing this around my city for the past few years. Stores like Target, Wal-Mart, and K-Mart and a couple of malls in my city still have pay phones. Most grocery stores have taken them out. There are a couple of movie theaters that still have pay phones and a few restaurants. I do feel for a person who doesn't have a cell phone or who leaves theirs at home and might be stuck in an emergency situation without pay phones around.

Hey now I have a great excuse next time I forget to call someone! Hey I meant to call but I just couldn't find a pay phone!

On the streets I have seen less and less. Manhattan still has quite a few more than Brooklyn does on the street so they are not totally gone yet.

Some establishments like restaurants, movie theaters, schools, and the subway station still have pay phones. When I get bored waiting for the train sometimes I check the payphone to see if it has dial tone; just to check to see if it actually works or if it's broken down and they just never got rid of it.

Here there are less pay phones, and half the ones left dont work. That said thankfully there are some that still work. I am guessing I am one of the very few here who still uses a payphone.

You really can't blame them. That said, there are still a few in my area, at the library, outside the gas station, etc.

Last time I saw one of those was about a decade ago in Upstate NY.

Actually, my old college had pay phone booths with a seat inside and doors that closed in one of the halls. I could tell by the decor it was probably from the 70s.

I feel sorry for people who can't afford a cell phone. If pay phones are removed completely some people will have a problem, esp. in an emergency.

Not to mention it's considerate!! I can't stand people who just stand/sit in public places and just yammer on their phones (or who yammer on their phones and drive, don't pay attention, and smash into your parents' car...but I digress). :mad:

There are times when I'll be out really late, and I'm at a business getting things, and I'll hear somebody yammering on their cell and I'm thinking "Who the heck you talking to at 2AM??"

I, too, can't stand the yammering in public. I don't know what makes these people think that their lives are so exciting, that everybody else wants to hear about it!!:mad:

Some people talk so loudly that in the past I've embarrassed myself by thinking they are talking to me. :lol:

Wow, pay phones... Those pretty much disappeared, when people starting getting cellular phones, didn't they? I don't think I've even used one since the 90s. There still are some left over here in Sweden, but of course, they're few and far between.

Call me weird, but I'm going to miss the novelty of pay phones. What I won't miss are all the germs breeding on them. I still do occasionally see them outside of corner stores, salons and laundromats.

I actually used a pay phone a few weeks ago. There are 2 pay phones in town that I know of and one up in front of Martin's Supermarket.

My brother and I sometimes talk about the many things that are disappearing or have already disappeared -- phone booths, home milk delivery, gas station attendants (who pump your gas, clean the windshield, and check the oil), library card catalogs...the list goes on and on.

Come to think of it, I haven't noticed them around anywhere. Actually, they use to be located out front of convenience stores and I'm not sure if they're still around or not. I'll have to go look now. I miss the phone booths, they started disappearing somewhere in the mid to late 70's. Remember the first Superman movie? Clark goes to look for a phone booth and can't find one, LOL.

Well, I'm in Stockholm right now, and I think I've seen one. And there are a few next to the square in my home town too.

I was on the ground floor at work today and I saw a pay phone that is still in use. It made me think of this thread!

I remember that part of the movie got a big laugh when I saw it in the theater(yes, I am that old). Actually he did find a pay phone, it was just one of those ones that weren't in the booth!!

There was also a scene in one of the movies where Clark ran into an alley, and came running back out as Superman. Maybe he really doesn't need the phone booth after all!!:D

I live in a very big city so I still see some, but they are a dying breed. As far as I'm concerned, viva la cell phone! (but I just have to remember to keep mine always juiced up!)

Oh man, that was hilarious! I also saw "Superman The Movie" at the theater (a couple of times I think).... when Clark comes up to that phone that's just under a little windshield (as opposed to being in an actual booth) and looks it over for a couple of seconds before moving on, that just brought the house down.
