Fugitive's family is one of the first places the law goes to so it's best that they not hear from me personally.

It also depends on the circumstances going on; what I did, why I did it... etc.

By the way, I think my family will be worried regardless they hear from me or not if they know I'm running from the law. Me calling and saying "I'm running.." I don't think would make them feel much better.

If your on the run from the police a communications blackout is the only way to go. Any phone call, text, or e-mail gives the police a chance to trace you.

I don't think I would would call anyone.

I would write letters and discretely drop them in mailboxes as I roam the country, never staying in one place for too long, in my quest to find the one-armed man.

The police would be able able to trace that phone call and would be able to get a good idea of the direction I was traveling (since I'm assuming they would also know my starting point) so it would be a mistake to call or attempt any other kind of communication. Except perhaps snail mail which would give me plenty of lead time to be far away from the mailing point by the time the letter was received.
