I wanted to give everyone a heads-up on the fact that Amazon is now charging sales tax. I just got ordering All in the Family, seasons 4 and 6 and was charged for the sales tax. I ordered my dvd's directly from Amazon (not a private seller). So, thought I'd let everyone know about this.

Amazon.ca here in Canada has always charged sales tax.

Amazon's sales tax rules have always depended on your state and/or provincial and/or national laws regarding sales taxes. If they're charging you, that means either a sales tax for online shopping was enacted where you live and this won't be the last you see of it....or it means it was already on the books and your gov't went after Amazon for failure to charge.

We've been charged tax on online purchases here for years.

I ordered 4 books and a dvd (Heartland season 1 vol. 1) directly from amazon dot com this evening and, as usual, was not charged sales tax. I live in FL

I placed an order yesterday and no tax for me either. I'm in Texas. A few weeks ago though, I purchased a Creative Zen MP3 player and they charged me tax because it was sold directly by Creative Labs in Texas.

I purchased a few things from Amazon on Friday and I wasn't charged tax. I live in New Mexico. I have heard that Amazon and a lot of other online stores charge taxes if you live in California or Texas.

If you live in a state where Amazon has a distribution center, you will be charged sales tax. For instance, I live in NC and receive most of my amazon.com orders from a distribution house in Lexington, KY. I am not charged any sales tax. But a college pal of mine who lives in KY has been paying tax on orders for a long time.

They started doing it to me in NY about 2 years ago. So I just order all of my stuff from Deep Discount. Their loss as I buy a few hundred dollars worth of DVDs and CDs every month.

Amazon.ca has always charged GST, it's 5%. It depends where you live in Canada what taxes you have to pay. Since I live on Prince Edward Island, I only have to pay GST (5%). Some provinces have HST and are charged 13% tax. Even with the shipping, it's still cheaper to buy from Amazon than it is in the store (where they charge 5% GST, 10% PST).
