Sorry about another post, but I am really enjoying TPDS again after a long time without it. It is great to talk to others who are enthuisatic about it too!

I find the show to be really different for a sitcom of that era. The idea of identical cousins played by one actress is fascinating. Patty Duke was (is) a superb actress. Watch her closely and you can see all the subleties she used to make Patty and Cathy totally different. With posture, mannerisms, and voice she created two completely unique characters and was very consistent. That had to be difficult for her, but she made it look easy.

Isn't it interesting how the Lanes always sit around the living room in a cluster? They read or play games, but they are always together! Sometimes they are on the couch and coffee table, and sometimes they are in that alcove thing where the piano was, but they are always in a group.

Also, why does Cathy have an accent when her father Kenneth doesn't? Didn't they live in most of the same places together?

Bye-ee!

Some of my favorite scenes are the Patty/Cathy ones, especially the arguments. You'd never guess it was the same actress!

My guess about the accent is that Kenneth grew up in America and held on to his American accent, while Cathy grew up in Europe where she acquired her accent. In the unaired pilot Cathy said she was born in Boston but hadn't been back to America until her arrival at the Lane house.

What do I like about the show? Where do I start!! Yes, the convos betw Patty and Cathy are tdf. What I love-for starters: Patty's hairbrained schemes, Natalie & Martin's easy and wise good nature, the Sue Ellen rivalry AND MORE.

In the early episodes, I love the way Patty manhandles Ross. Sometimes she shakes him around like a rag doll. And when Ross makes Patty angry she gets right in his face. Of course, Ross takes his revenge and poor Cathy ends up as collateral damage.

It is strange that Paul O'Keefe is not mentioned in the show's opening credits. His name appears in the closing credits only.

You're right, I didn't really notice that. It seems that in those days child actors were 2nd-class citizens!

I wonder if Patty Duke got paid twice as much since she played two roles. I doubt it!

She mentioned in an interview that the show was moved from L.A. to New York so they could get around California's child labor laws since she and Paul were both under 18. That kind of shows the attitude towards professional kids in 1963. :(

I've also been enjoying this show. I just got the first 2 discs from Netflix, and I hadn't seen it in years; ever since it used to be on Nick at Nite.

And until then, I hadn't seen it in 20 years, when a local station used to rerun it in the 60s on weeknights, after it went off ABC.

Actually, Patty Duke and William Schallert are the only actors mentioned in the opening credits for the 1st season. Jean Byron gets mentioned starting with the opening credits of season 2. Paul O'Keefe is never mentioned in the show's opening credits, but his name appears in the closing credits.

I used to watch this in the 60's & am enjoying the re-runs on World Harvest tv. I'd love to able to one day save up for the dvd of it. I remember it was on Nick At Nite Yrs ago but I never got to see it much cuz back then there was no satellite out yet & cable wasn't out our way yet...

sattelite was around in the 80s, but they were big units that took up half of your back yard; and I think it was only avalible in certain areas.

I hope Season 2 is out in 2010. I love the episode "This Little Patty Went to Market". Poor Cathy gets roped into selling her apricot jam. Also looking forward to "Patty the Witness".

If they release Season 2, then it's probably sure-fire that they will release Season 3. Don't you think?

And also the Patty/Ross relationship!

and the sorta off again on again Richard/Patty bf/gf deal (not as spicy or hilarious as Wally & Ginger on The Adv. of O & H but fun nonetheless). Many many more (to come as I think of them) which will be easy with this gr8 show!

Throughout the entire 104 episodes, I wonder how many times Patty dumped Richard?

I just got done watching the first season, and its the first time I have seen the season all the way through since Nick at Nite showed it. The looking back on Patty Duke was interesting too. Not to be mean, and I know she has had some issues but Patti has not aged well. She is 62, but she looks like she is 72. Also I had no idea Eddie Applegate was 26 when the show started.

Bring on season two.

Speaking of age, I noticed that the girl who played the back of Patty Duke's head (Rita McLaughlin) was born in 1951. That would have made her 12 years old when the series started. I wonder why they picked someone so young? And it puts a different spin on the scene in The French Teacher where Richard tries to make Patty jealous by kissing Cathy/Rita. I wonder how Eddie Applegate felt about that?

Since Patty was so short, maybe the only double they could find was a kid! That might be another reason they filmed the show in New York instead of Hollywood. Kids could work longer hours!
