Singer Al Martino, who played the role of Johnny Fontane in "The Godfather," has died at his childhood home in the Philadelphia suburb of Springfield, Delaware County.

Publicist Sandy Friedman of Rogers & Cowan says Martino died Tuesday afternoon. He was 82.

Starting in 1952, Martino was known for hit songs including "Here in My Heart," "Spanish Eyes," "Can't Help Falling In Love" and "Volare." In addition to acting in "The Godfather," Martino sang the 1972 film's title score, "The Love Theme From The Godfather."

Martino was born in South Philadelphia as Alfred Cini and was a longtime resident of Beverly Hills, Calif.

My mom used to like Al Martino when my godfather gave her an Al Martino cassette and she used to like the song Spanish Eyes because of it's wonderful lyrics and he also sang a nice remake of the song Daddy's Little Girl and I didn't Al Martino was also an actor and that he was in The Godfather. I also know that he made a comeback before he died with an album called Come Share The Wine and the title song became a top hit on easy listening music stations and it showed that Al Martino still had talent and could easily sing the phone book if he could. It's a shame you can't find singers like Al Martino today because Al was truly a unique singer with loads of talent and great songs

Hi, Bestie! Did you know that Al Martino was a favorite of gangsters? They would ask him "Would youze sing Spanish eyes for my goil?" He also sang country music, including the theme song for the tv show "Rawhide" that Clint Eastwood was in.

To The Door Of The Sun is my favorite Al Martino song. It sounds like a 1960's song but it was recorded in 1974 and didn't hit the charts until early 1975. The original version has the lyrics sung with a mixture of English and Italian, but there is another version with all the lyrics sung in English, the English version can be listened to here:
