View Full Version : Stars & Celebrities dealing with mental illness
OH Nuts! 10-10-2009, 07:42 PM I've been really getting into S#1 of the Patty Duke Show. In the cast interview on the set, as well as in her past, Patty has been very forthright about her ordeals with bi-polar disorder. I have so much respect for Patty Duke; not only is she a great talent, she is so REAL & so honest and giving to the public. And I bet she has helped many others who battle with this particular (and similar) afflictions.
Name a star you admire who is battling/has battled with mental illness.

Donny has been very forthright in recent years about his problems with panic attacks. Here are several articles about it:

browneyes106 10-17-2009, 04:19 PM Yestery on E! there was a documentary on celebrities with mental illness. Howie Mandel who suffers from OCD was mentioned and Delta Burke who has issues with depression and hoarding was also mentioned. Kim Basigner dealt with agoraphobia for awhile.

Yeah, I think I remember reading that Kim Basinger also suffered panic attacks awhile back.
sunshinefizzy 10-17-2009, 08:46 PM Vivien Leigh, who played Scarlett O'Hara in Gone with the Wind and Blanche Dubois in Streetcar named Desire, had manic depression (bipolar disorder) so bad that she would have electric shock treatments right before going on stage. Never missed a beat mind you.

Don Everly of the Everly Brothers also underwent electroshock therapy after attempting suicide in the early 60s. (Little bit of trivia - his daughter Erin was once married to Axl Rose!)
browneyes106 10-17-2009, 09:08 PM Jeff Buckley before his death believed that he was bipolar and told a few people that he had the symptoms and he was planning to seek help. Jeff was a big fan of Nina Simone who was bipolar.
Janice 10-17-2009, 09:16 PM Yeah, I think I remember reading that Kim Basinger also suffered panic attacks awhile back.
Although, not official, I think Kim's ex Alec Baldwin has major issues. His temper was listed as a reason for their divorce. There's that insane phone call to their young daughter. Another celeb who struggled with mental issues is Robert Downey Jr. He seems fine today. I always liked him.

Oh, I wouldn't be surprised a bit if Alec Baldwin has issues. I think I'd be suffering panic attacks just from having to live with him AND put up with his temper!!

Cactus Jack 10-17-2009, 10:32 PM From his IMDB page
Revealed in 2005 that he has bipolar disorder and that it runs in his family.

She was performing in a lot of plays with Sir Laurence Olivier (her then-husband) at the time and supposedly even physically attacked him on stage.

catlover79 10-17-2009, 10:56 PM Maureen McCormick (aka Marcia Brady) has also been forthright about her lifelong struggle with depression (from her book, it sounds like bipolar disorder) in recent years. Through medication, prayer, and the support of her husband and daughter, she is doing well today.
Chocoholic 10-17-2009, 10:58 PM It's amazing the number of people dealing with mental illness and you don't even know it. I can't even believe the grade school kids who are dealing with depression, bipolar, OCD, schizophrenia, and other mental illnesses.

I know what you mean. I was only officially diagnosed with panic disorder earlier this year, but I've had it since I was at least 12. I've had depression at least as long. It's a scary thing, it really is. :(

I think it was their tenth year of marriage or something like that, Vivien told Larry she didn't love him anymore; that she only thought of him as like a brother. He took a great deal of abuse from her.
browneyes106 10-18-2009, 02:07 PM I never knew this either. WOW..............
I've often wondered if Jim Carey was or Andy Kaufman?
I have read some unconfirmed stories about Jim Carey being bipolar.
