Schmoopie 10-06-2009, 12:11 AM I really liked him. He was my husband's favorite. I won't name him to give others a chance to find out for themselves. My favorite is Jerry Seinfeld. He makes me laugh so hard at his stand up routines that my stomach muscles hurt afterwards!
Wreckless 10-06-2009, 12:15 AM my favorite George Carlin bit was the baseball one . Charles/Zoneboy might enjoy that clip as well ;). He was great though, besides that. I loved his material
My favorites are
Jim Gaffigan
Chris Rock
George Carlin
Jackie Martling
Robin Williams
Adam Sandler
Eddie Murray
Richard Pryor
the first one may not ring an immediate bell, especially compared to the rest on my list of favorites, but seriously- Jim Gaffigan is f*cking funny, he's hilarious! Check him out ;). I'll find some links.
Wreckless 10-06-2009, 12:16 AM Btw, you know who is a great, funny, unexpected funny stand up comedian?
Ellen DiGenerous
Eddie Murray
Eddie Murray, the Hall-of-Fame first baseman for the Baltimore Orioles, the Los Angeles Dodgers, and a few other teams?
I think you meant to say Eddie Murphy!
Wreckless 10-06-2009, 12:25 AM Eddie Murray, the Hall-of-Fame first baseman for the Baltimore Orioles, the Los Angeles Dodgers, and a few other teams?
I think you meant to say Eddie Murphy!
No I meant Mr. Oriole ;)
:brent yeah I did. I meant to say Eddie MURPHY lol. The guy in those fat movies now all of a sudden. Seriously, he's either in a movie with a fat woman, or about animals now. I'm always getting names mixed up lol- too many confusing, sound alike names! haha

I like Jim Gaffigan!! I've seen his act on Comedy Central, I like when he's talking about something and his voice goes up, and it also sounds like he's whispering. I think that's alot of his act. He's hilarious when he's on Conan.
Oh, and sorry to rub this in, but my sister & I are going to see Robin Williams on the 23rd, and we are going to be able to meet him!! We've been waiting for this since Jan., when I ordered the tickets. We were supposed to see him this past March, but a couple days before our show, he had his health incident, and the show was postponed.
And George Carlin ROCKS!! We got to see him, too, a while back. Never got to meet him though.:p
It's amazing of all the things he was able to remember in his act, especially that baseball bit that you mentioned!!
Marvo301 10-06-2009, 01:27 AM My favorite "comedian" is Groucho Marx. I'm a big fan of word play and I just love the way Groucho plays with words! :groucho "That's the silliest thing I ever Hoid!"
comedyfreak 10-06-2009, 04:07 AM I like the legends plus these guys:
Bob Hope
Jack Benny
George Burns
Bill Cosby
Eddie Murphy
Chris Tucker
George Lopez
Wreckless 10-06-2009, 05:12 AM I've been watching non-stop George Carlin stand up videos all night on youtube, since this thread. The dude is absolutely hilarious. Not to mention he's the GOAT.
sunshinefizzy 10-06-2009, 07:20 AM Another top class comedian I really like is Don Rickles. He was on all the Dean Martin Roasts and he just makes rolf.
Bob Hope Roast:
"There's no booing, there's nop booing!!! One more outburst and we're gonna let Bob Hope get up and do his jokes!!!"
Frank Sinatra:
"My wife is a Jew. She wears so much jewlery she can't keep her head up."
(drops head on podium)
Jimmy Stewart:
"Jimmy, I spoke to the family you're doing WELL. Hey, Jimmy good morning!!!"
I could go on forever.
My favorite "comedian" is Groucho Marx. I'm a big fan of word play and I just love the way Groucho plays with words! :groucho "That's the silliest thing I ever Hoid!"
I agree. Groucho Marx was a genius!
In addition to Groucho, I also like Woody Allen, Bob Hope, Rodney Dangerfield, David Letterman, and Jerry Seinfeld.
Wreckless 10-06-2009, 08:15 AM Frank Sinatra:

Frank is great. I love whatever he does. sing, joke, be himself.
*Pleasant Tomorrow* 10-06-2009, 10:47 AM I take it we're just talking about stand-up?
Anyway, George Carlin was great. And oh man, Ellen Degeneres with her stand up? Sooo funny. I also like:
Kathy Griffin
Dane Cook (deal with it, most people my age think he's hilarious)
Lewis Black
Jon Stewart (I've seen him do stand-up live in 2005, it was awesome)
Lisa Lampanelli
Chris Rock
Probably others I can't think of.
MickeyMac 10-06-2009, 12:07 PM Without a doubt
Richard Pryor. He is the only stand up comedian that never bored me.
Penny Lane 10-06-2009, 02:57 PM My favorite is Bill Cosby. He is hilarious without being vulgar. He nails children/family situations right on! I personally don't find cussing and vulgarity funny. Real life situations are really funny and he does it so well!:D
gidgetgrape 10-06-2009, 03:00 PM Richard Pryor for me. Miss him very much.

Atlas 10-06-2009, 05:27 PM Some great artists listed here. No one has mentioned Sara Silverman. I think she is very good. Kinda reminds me of Carlin in her subject matter and delivery.

Yes! I was going to mention her but I hadn't seen anything of hers in awhile so I didn't. I always found her hilarious. Some people can't take the crude humor but I love it lol.

He was great. I was totally shocked when I saw that he had died. My husband and I were in Vegas of all places and I forget which hotel we were in. We were checking out one of the buffets. I noticed Jerry Seinfeld being interviewed on their TV's on Larry King. I ran over to watch it and my jaw about dropped when I read the news on screen! I know I've told that story before but wanted to share it again. Turns out Jerry was being interviewed about George Carlin.
Check out this NY Times article that Jerry Seinfeld wrote about George Carlin. Very nice tribute, and the ending is absolutely hilarious! George would have loved it!

lilhave 10-07-2009, 07:25 AM Comedy like all things in the universe must be able to stand the test of time. 50 years from now will any of the present day comedians, movies or Tv be remembered as great?, doubt it but take duos like Laurel and Hardy. Their careers began in the mid 20's and still remain 80 years later as one of the, if not the finest comedy pair of all time. Abbott and Costello 70 years later are stil great. No one had better timing then Jack Benny. Watch some of his Tv shows. Red Skelton, Sid Ceasar, and Jackie Gleason had such talent and 50 years later are still revered. All three did stand-up, mime and sketch work. For most of today, it's a off color script, curse a little and wait for the laughter.

Yeah it sucks, and yeah I've heard about Jerry writing a story in the paper about him. Never read it until I have it now. Thanks for the link Andrea.
Wreckless 10-07-2009, 07:33 AM That was a very good article on George, Andrea. Jerry did a fantastic job writing and getting it published. His thought process, what George was thinking- is very interesting and unique.

I absolutely agree. Some other comics who have stood the test of time
include: Lucille Ball, Jerry Lewis, The Three Stooges, Bob Hope, Steve
Allen, Milton Berle, Phil Silvers, Groucho Marx, Bill Cosby, Bob Newhart,
Carol Burnett and Flip Wilson. None of the legends of comedy had to
resort to cheap laughs or vulgar language to get laughs.

I had the I Love Lucy marathon on last weekend on Hallmark channel. It never gets old.
The Three Stooges
I can't believe I didn't think of them!! And I was just quoting to one of my co-workers yesterday a funny line that Curly said in a short.
Bob Newhart
Weird, because I usually didn't watch his TV shows but I always loved his deadpan humor.
Carol Burnett:rock:
Flip Wilson
I remember watching his show when I was a kid, too!
None of the legends of comedy had to
resort to cheap laughs or vulgar language to get laughs.
Amen to that!!

Great stuff. Bob Newhart from his TV shows was one of the great commedians. The thing that made him great was that he could deadpan all his jokes and just have you rolling. What was funny was his pause... you'd know the joke was coming, you'd probably even know what he was going to say and you'd laugh in anticipation.... then you'd laugh more and harder after he said it.
He was one of the few artists where anticipating the joke was half the fun. Bill Cosby was much the same way.

Newhart always credited Jack Benny for his timing. Was a big fan of Benny.

I know of Jack Benny and I think I seen a clip of him on the Johnny Carson at one time, but I know he was a huge inspiration to a lot of commedians. He is one of the greats.
Atlas 10-08-2009, 12:09 PM speaking of ground breaking commedians. Did anyone like Red Skelton or Buddy Hacket? I thought they were both hilarious and very underrated today. I know back in the 70's and ealry 80's they were considered greats.
