It's kind of interesting that they'd wait until after they released two individual seasons to decide that a complete series release is the way to go. Seems rather unfair to those who purchased the first two individual season sets. (fortunately I'm not one of them!)

I agree it's unfair to those who have the first two seasons (I'm one of them) but if this is the only way to get the rest of the series than count me in! Besides, it's only two seasons, not four like what Fox was originally going to do to Mary Tyler Moore. I'll sell my first two sets or give them away. I'll probably keep the first set because it is the only set I have that has the back to the 80's special feature from Universal. I love this show and want the WHOLE series on DVD. At least this way we don't have to worry if season four five or six will come out after a third season set. My only concern is whether all of the music/singing will be intact.

I hope they do boxes for each season. Do the first 2 again, then make 4 boxes for the following seasons and put them all together into one big box. Is that how they're doing it?

TV_Fan

I would think that's how they would do it but no further information is available right now. I hope it's not a very big box or some strange shape that some complete series sets come in. I normally would not buy a complete series set, but this is one show that I must have complete on DVD if available.

The first thing that I would be interested in knowing is what your native language is. On top of this, what I think that the writing of the article meant by forgone is that the idea had been abandonded or given up.

What I'm thinking is they are gonna use the first 2 seasons they already released before and how they put them together in one set. They'll probably create 4 more individual boxes for the final 4 seasons with slim cases for those particiular seasons, menu's for those seasons, and info for those episodes/descriptions on the back of the boxes for that paticular season the way they did for the first 2. Then they'll sell them in the stores and then online people will start selling them individually sometimes.

I hope they do a good job with seasons 3-6, and if they re-release the whole series, they do chapter selections the way they did for season 2, after every opening theme, after every commercial break. I forget how they handled season 1, but in the USA, season 1 had subtitles but 1 skip for each episode and didn't do scene selections. They need 3 per episode the way they did season 2's.

So original, full episodes with all music intact, unedited, good quality, maybe even subtitles for the entire series and 3 chapter selections per episode.

We won't need no bonus episodes because the whole series will be there, maybe the E! True story on GAB would be a nice addition for an extra since this show will never have a Reunion.

They should do interviews with the cast though each season, maybe a short 5 minute thing per season they could include on the last DVD with the kids and how they look today, and then when they get to season 3-6, they could include Joey and Telma's comments and how they look today.

TV_Fan

Don't hold your breath for any bonus features. I can't think of any VEI sets that have bonus features other than bonus episodes. They are a small Canadian company that probably doesn't have the resources to produce decent extras. I'm sure they could if they wanted to, but GAB hasn't seen a release in 3 years. If their sets were big sellers season sets would have been released more speedily. The Candaian audience is probably a lot smaller than the US audience and the casual DVD buyer isn't going to know that GAB beyond season 2 is only available through Canada.

In a sense I'm glad they're doing the complete series because I don't want to be left hanging another 3 years waiting for the next set. If a company like Shout! had picked up the US rights it probably would have been different, but now that's highly unlikely to happen. I just want this set ASAP.

I am very happy to see that this page is finally getting a workout! Another show that I would really like to see more seasons of on DVD is "Mad About You". Is anyone here a fan of that series? I have the biggest crush on Helen Hunt! Earlier today, I posted a message on that show's page telling my buddies there about all the buzz that is going on here. So far, it has three views and zero responses. I really wish that fans of that show would start making some noise!

I'm glad they finally followed my advice and release in a box set... I just didn't see enough people buying the series to be released in single seasons. I don't know why it's not popular, it's one of the better shows ever made.

Oh, and to Wildchats, I saw Glee last week, and the teacher sitting at the table in the lounge sure looked farmiliar. ;)

For the bulk of the day, I have been rotating between this page, Caroline in the City, Facts of Life, Friends and Mad about You. I have been doing whatever I can think of to stimulate comversation about all of the above. However, for some reason, this seems to be the only page that people are posting on! Any thoughts anyone?

Now that I am revisiting it, I see that the period is gone. Usually when something gets edited, the date and time of the editing gets published. However, there is no "Last Edited" posting on here. Any ideas as to what is goin on?

I hate to sound cynical but I am taking this news of a complete series set with a grain of salt. If it does happen, it won't be for a while. VEI has a track record for delaying single-season sets. So releasing a COMPLETE series set seems like a longshot. I would love to see it happen but this project seems to be in a preliminary phase right now. It's already been a long wait since Season 2. So I am not taking this too seriously just yet. Hope it does happen but we'll have to wait...yes, more waiting...and see.

Wow cool, thanks for the update TJ. I figured they had to be coming since if they announced a mid 2010 release date, at least several more season already had to be prepared. It wouldn't make sense to cancel mid project. Any word on any possible other extras? I'm not really expecting much since this is such a small company. Also any word on any music cuts? I know the show used a considerable amount of music, but I think it was mostly Nell & cast performing. That should be a lot easier & cheaper to clear than if it is actual master recordings used.

All I can say is ... WOW!!! I, already, have the complete series of "Kate & Allie" but would definitely double-dip. As for "Gimme a Break", I can't wait. If they are already preparing the package photos, it must not be too long before they schedule a release date. This will definitely be an exciting day for all GAB fans who have been waiting for this release. I'm very excited about finally having some of my favorite episodes (especially "The Big Apple" 2-parter).

I wonder about the music substitutions too. Hopefully, they will be able to keep all or most of the music intact. It was always a pleasure to hear Nell sing. :)

In response to Richee who saw me on Glee a while back on FOX...

What was really cool was how episode 13 opened up, the students talking about Mr. Sinacori, The Creepy Math Teacher who always sings when he's walking down the halls. To think, I was always horrible in Math, I sang on You Tube, at The Price Is Right, and now I'm known as a singing Math Teacher on Glee! It was so awesome to get a character last named after my last name.

HERE IS A CHALLENGE! Over 20 years ago GAB was on every day after school. Later at night Maude reruns were on. One night I watched Maude and the very next day GAB had almost the exact same episode, word for word for over 80% of the show. I'm too lazy to do it myself but I challenge someone to find the episode guides for GAB and Maude and discover which episode this is.

Mark,

I've been a fan of you on YouTube, Stickam, ect. I always knew you would get some where one day, and it looks like you are well on your way!

I did see the mention of Mr. Sinacori, and I hope they bring you into the role of the math teacher this season. I'm not sure if they are already filming or not, but your character would definitely make for some interesting story-lines.

Maybe I will write a few letters to the writers and production team about the idea of bringing Mr. Sinacori in as a recurring role.

joeblow1970
03-13-2010, 09:14 PM
I don't remember what the episode was about but I remember that Maude's comebacks would be split between a couple of the kids on GAB, and they would say the comeback lines word for word. This happened in the days before the internet and I've always been curious if the same writer recycled his own script or if someone blatantly stole a script. I wish I could remember what the episode was about.

I am responding to this thread simply to show how much joy it gives me to see a post by someone other than myself! As you can see, I have been racking my brain trying to think of ways to stimulate some conversation about this fine series! Another shows page that seems to be getting about as little action as this one is "Friends". Those of you who have been around these parts for a while know that, when I run out of things to write about regarding the show itself, I tend to fill up time and space by writing about site traffic. Well, over on the "Friends" page, I did just that about seven minutes ago! In this particular case, the number of views that I was commemorating was twenty-one. I would be very interested in what any of you think of my efforts to sympolize that number! However, interstingly, two other pages that have seemed to be about as stagnant as these two for quite a while seem to be going great guns! These two are "The Brady Bunch" and the "Facts of Life". The posts on these two pages seems to be so constant that I find it next to impossible to keep track of them! Go figure!

Thanks! Richee I just enjoy being on TV shows and films, even if it's background work without lines. From the way it looks, Brad Falchuk, creator/writer/director/producer on Glee, knew me from my "Hater Group" which he's in called Sosh, which is a Boston Red Sox fan group who have been mocking me since I started posting online years ago (even before I moved to LA) and post all my videos in private boards there. He wanted me on the show, then he wrote into the 13th show that my character was Mr. Sinacori. At first, I was just the "Creepy Math Teacher" which he told me at the show, but it's cool that he named my character after my last name. I love being weird, so whatever he wants me to do if I go back, I'd be up for doing. He did write I always sing down the halls, so we'll see if anything happens with that.

I wish we knew what was going on. I have tried to e-mail VEI. A response I received about a month ago said "Seasons of GAB will be released as they become available" which was strange because it would mean they were going the season by season route which is not the case according to other news reports. VEI has a strange repertoire when it comes to releasing dvds. They go through numerous delays and then the dvd simply becomes available without any announcement or warning. My guess is they are still working on it. It's a small company. But I wouldn't bet on it being released this year. It would be a nice surprise though.

Yeah, that's the same e-mail address I used. I e-mailed them a few times and didn't always receive a response. I don't know how big their crew is over there. But I'm not sure they actually have their offices working everyday. I mean, they release a handful of dvds a year from what we've seen. It must be a very small company. skees53

Kate & Allie was the same price and was basically unedited (aside from the ones that were originally messed up on the first two seasons)... my experience with VEI is that they've had a pretty good track record of releasing things unedited with all original music intact within the episodes. It is worth noting that when we reviewed seasons 1 and 2 of Kate & Allie and brought up to VEI that there were edited episodes, they were very concerned about the issue, and actually followed up with us so that they could ensure that future sets would be unedited. I can't think of any other company that has ever go through such means to ensure the best possible product (in fact, another studio, UrbanWorks, basically told us to "get over it and stop whining" when we complained about Cosby Show season 1 being edited).

Also, it is a pretty safe bet that this set will show up on amazon.com soon as well, but just like other VEI series (namely, Kate & Allie, Riptide, and Hardcastle & McCormick), the price will be jacked up so much that it'll be cheaper to buy it from amazon.ca and pay for the international shipping... it is sad that they do that every time.

Well the first two seasons by VEI did have the music intact (from the review of season one as I only have their season two set) so I guess there's the possibility of it being unedited. At least the first two seasons we know will be unedited. I don't remember exactly how much music the later seasons of GAB had but I know it's significant enough to make me worry. On the other hand though I think the majority of the music was the Nell/the cast singing/performing which is much cheaper to license than actual studio master recordings. Regardless, I already pre ordered the set from amazon.ca. This is afterall my all time favorite sitcom and I simply MUST have it on DVD. Thanks for bringing the good news skees.

Another important thing to note about the music is that the rights to use the music vary from country to country, and different laws sometimes make it easier (and sometimes more difficult) to license the music for releases not intended for the US. I have no idea what all the legal nuances are, exactly, but I have heard that since such releases are intended for a foreign market, where the rights holder knows the product won't as widely distributed as it would be in the nation where it originated, it makes it a little easier... think about it this way. Universal (had they not abandoned it) would have put out the rest of this series in the US, and would have had to deal with US music companies as a mainstream company selling a product to a wide audience. VEI, on the other hand, has much lower sales expectations, the music rights holders are aware of that, and willing to charge much less just to make something off of it.

I preordered this within seconds of finding out it was available, I can't wait until it comes!

July 20th! Can't wait! There are a few shows I have never seen yet, and I'm excited about seeing.

Grandpa's Will
Ship Of Fools Pt 1 and 2
Getting To Know You
The Purse Snatcher
The Scam
The Loan
The Window Pt 2

Not sure if there are others, but I still haven't seen those yet.

Very much looking forward to this because now we don't have to worry about tape trading or hoping the show comes to NAN or reruns on some other channel (where it will only stay a very short time).

I hope these are full episodes that aren't edited and with chapter selections and set ups as they did for season 2, not editing the episodes and keeping them in the way they were aired on NBC.

I doubt we will get any extras, but the surviving cast should do a feature, talking about the series.

It is about the same in US dollars, the US and Canadian dollars are very close to being equal right now.

I bought the set from amazon.ca and my total cost was roughly $51, and that included the international shipping... that is a pretty good deal for ANY complete series!

I pre-ordered mine and it came out to be $51.97

It is also worth noting that for just $1 more, you can get the expedited shipping. I just went in and changed mine to that, and the total went up to $52.97, and given the ship times from Canada at times, that extra dollar is probably well worth it.

I may change it to expidited shipping too. But they don't charge until it ships, right? So the cost might be different in US dollars depending on the exhange rate the day the order ships. Either way, the Canadian dollar is usally relatively close to the US dollar so I don't think it matters much.

This is great news! I pre-ordered my set, and locked in that nice price. If the price goes up between now and the release date, I'll still get it for $41.99, and if the price goes down, I'll get it cheaper!!

Here's the note from amazon:
Our Pre-order Price Guarantee covers one or more item(s) in this order. If the Amazon.ca price decreases between the time you place your order and the end of the day of the release date, you'll receive the lowest price.

Thanks for letting us know. I never would have thought to check expedited shipping, but you're right! Its only $1.00 more, so I went ahead and chose it.

I'm not surprised. This is a show many have wanted complete on dvd for a while. Goes to show you that Universal was expecting some ridiculous number. Glad to see VEI followed through. This is a wonderful release for them.

Ship Of Fools is a great episode. Very funny! Also The Window is a lot of fun with Nell and Rosie. So many great ones in the later seasons.
Second Chances is a fave of mine and Nell sings 2 songs which I hope are in tact in this release.

Me too. I feel the same way. Even though we've had the first 2 seasons, I fondly remember the Addy years and the later Joey years. There's an episode where Nell is worried about her job in NY so she matches Joey up with her boss' daughter. Really funny episode, especially when her boss walks in and Nell is sitting at her desk. It's going to be so great to get these on dvd.

I wish The Facts of Life would do this too.

Who's The Boss is owned by Sony and extremely unlikely to get anymore releases by them. They could license it out but its doubtful with so many seasons it would get a complete series set.

It would cost way more if the release it by season. People this is very cheap for a complete series you would rather pay like 20 dollars or more per season than pay the little price for the complete series!

We are quickly approaching the release of "The Complete Series". Is everyone as excited as I am? Only a few days until, hopefully, amazon starts shipping out everyone's sets. I was hoping we would have an advance review of the set on this site. Maybe in the next day or two?

I can't wait to see the packaging. I'm curious to see the pics that have been used for the inner cases. And, obviously, one of the biggest questions is whether or not the episodes are complete original episodes. Hopefully, by next week we will know.

On with the countdown... :yippee:

I've been counting down to this day since I started collecting TV on DVD. Finally my all time favorite sitcom will be complete on DVD :happyface Just how complete the episodes are remains to be seen. My main concern is the music, but I have a feeling we won't be disappointed.

Just out of curiousity, are there any fans from Canada here? I have a feeling most of the people buying this set are Americans. That's why the ranking is so high on amazon.ca. We are very lucky this show's rights were seperate in the two countires. If it wasn't for VEI it's extrmely unlikely this show would have gotten past season one on DVD.
